Yes, a new YouTube channel in India can grow while running a 24/7 live stream—but there is no reliable evidence that streaming continuously causes growth. YouTube’s audience figures show that people watch live content at scale, and vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed. Neither fact predicts impressions, subscribers, watch time, or earnings for an individual channel. For a new documentary channel, treat an always-on stream as an experiment with a distinct viewer benefit, not a growth shortcut.
What a 24/7 stream can—and cannot—do for a new channel
YouTube reported that more than 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. In a separate figure, YouTube said more than 600 million logged-in viewers watched live content, including archives, each day on average in August 2026. Those are platform-wide audience measures, not evidence that a new channel will be recommended or that continuous broadcasting will outperform scheduled videos.
For a documentary channel, the useful question is not simply whether the stream is always on. It is whether a viewer arriving at a particular moment gets a reason to stay, participate, and return. A curated live screening, a host-led discussion, or a clearly themed programme can offer a different experience from an unchanging loop. That is an editorial choice, not a guarantee of better reach.
Continuous broadcasting also has trade-offs: someone must plan the programming, check that playback and audio are working, moderate chat, and respond when a stream fails. If there is no meaningful live interaction or fresh programming, a stream may be less useful to viewers than a well-organized library of individual documentaries.

Choose a format for discovery and the documentary material
Vertical live streams
YouTube says vertical live streams are discoverable in the Shorts feed; its feature comparison says horizontal live streams are not. This gives a vertical broadcast an additional discovery surface, including for people who are not already subscribers. It does not guarantee that the stream will receive impressions, clicks, or subscribers. See YouTube’s comparison of horizontal and vertical live streams.
Vertical framing can suit a presenter, interview, or close-up conversation. It may not suit documentary footage composed for a wide screen, small subtitles, maps, or text along the edges. Check that important material stays legible in the vertical layout rather than assuming a crop will work.

Horizontal or dual-format live
YouTube’s Live Control Room can deliver horizontal and vertical versions at the same time. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version; the formats share a stream URL and chat, according to YouTube’s help page linked above. If you use this option, review the configured vertical layout and test the finished output before relying on it for a long broadcast.
YouTube’s September 2025 Live update also described AI-powered highlights that can turn compelling livestream moments into Shorts. Availability may depend on rollout and channel access. Review generated clips for context, captions, and rights before publishing them.

Plan archives and watch hours before going live
A continuous broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete video-on-demand archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, use shorter sessions, check that each one appears and is public in YouTube Studio, and make a local recording backup where practical.
This matters for monetization as well as replay. YouTube’s Partner Programme explainer says qualified public watch hours can come from public long-form videos and archived livestreams, while live streams that are not archived do not count as qualified watch hours. A 24/7 broadcast therefore does not automatically add all of its viewing time toward YPP thresholds. You must still meet the applicable requirements and pass channel review; check YouTube’s Partner Programme eligibility information for current rules.

Keep the content original and worth returning to
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. It expects content to be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced material without meaningful creative, educational, or other viewer value can fail review. Recurring formats are not automatically disallowed, but their substance should vary and contribute something to viewers. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
For a documentary stream, consider whether each segment adds context or changes the experience: for example, a host can introduce a film, explain its background, take questions, or connect it to a distinct theme. Replaying the same footage or visuals indefinitely should not be treated as a monetization strategy. The policy does not establish that every continuous stream is ineligible; it does mean duration and accumulated viewing do not substitute for original value.

Rights are a separate issue. Only stream documentaries, music, still images, and other material you have permission to use in a YouTube livestream. A recording being available online does not by itself grant streaming rights. Review the copyright safety checklist before building a programme around third-party material.

YouTube announced on July 7, 2026 that Gifts were launching in India. Eligible creators can enable Gifts through Studio and accept the Virtual Items Module; viewers buy Jewels and send Gifts, while creators receive Rubies that represent earnings. Eligibility is not automatic for new channels, and the announcement says enabling Gifts removes access to Super Stickers on live streams. Check current availability and controls in Studio before planning around the feature. Details are in YouTube’s India Gifts announcement.
YouTube also reported that Indian channels earning seven figures or more in INR grew by over 20% year over year, based on YouTube internal data cited in that July 2026 announcement. That broad statistic is not typical creator income and was not attributed to 24/7 streaming. Separately, a May 2025 Ipsos survey reported by YouTube found that 92% of surveyed Indian YouTube creators said the platform helps them foster a deep community with their audience. That measures creators’ views, not channel growth or earnings.
A practical way to test the idea
- Define the viewer promise. Choose a documentary theme and explain what someone will find if they arrive mid-stream. Decide whether the experience is a hosted screening, a scheduled programme, a discussion, or another format with clear value.
- Check rights and presentation. Confirm permissions for all footage, music, and images. Preview horizontal and, if used, vertical framing; check subtitles and on-screen text at phone size.
- Start with finite sessions. Run a shorter scheduled stream first rather than assuming a single continuous broadcast will archive completely. YouTube’s warning about streams exceeding 12 hours makes shorter sessions the safer choice when a replay matters.
- Prepare a recording backup. Keep a local recording when feasible, then verify the live archive’s visibility in Studio instead of assuming it was saved.
- Set measures before the test. Track whether viewers stay, return, participate, or subscribe, and compare those outcomes with your channel’s other formats. Platform-wide live-viewing statistics are not a substitute for your own results.
- Review and adjust. If viewers find the stream but leave quickly, revisit pacing, framing, audio, and the promise made in its title and description. If there is no distinct value in keeping it live, publish the material as organized videos or schedule specific sessions instead.
