Yes. A documentary feature can be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Documentary Feature, but it must qualify separately for each category and complete the required entry steps for both. Entering Documentary Feature does not automatically enter the film for Best Picture.
The short answer: one film can pursue both categories
The Academy permits a documentary feature submitted in Documentary Feature to seek recognition in other categories, including Best Picture, provided it satisfies the applicable rules, materials and deadlines for those categories. The permission is cross-category eligibility, not a guarantee of consideration or a nomination.
For the current 99th Awards cycle, the Academy’s Documentary Feature Film FAQ makes the separation explicit: a Documentary Feature entry does not automatically enter a film for Best Picture. A production seeking Best Picture consideration must also submit a General Entry form and complete a RAISE form. The film must then meet Best Picture’s own requirements.
Think of the process as two applications for the same film. Documentary Feature has one set of category rules and deadlines; Best Picture has another. A film may satisfy both, only one, or neither.

How the two category entries differ
| Question | Documentary Feature | Best Picture |
|---|---|---|
| Can a documentary feature seek this category? | Yes, if it meets Documentary Feature rules. | Yes, if it meets Best Picture rules. |
| Does entry in the other category happen automatically? | No. Documentary Feature entry does not automatically create a Best Picture entry. | No. Best Picture consideration requires its own submission steps. |
| Form identified in current 99th Awards guidance | Documentary Feature submission. | General Entry form plus a completed RAISE form. |
| Whose eligibility rules apply? | Documentary Feature requirements, deadlines and category procedures. | Best Picture requirements, deadlines and category procedures. |
| What does successful submission mean? | The film is entered for consideration, subject to Academy review. | The film is entered for consideration, subject to Academy review. |
The Academy’s 98th Awards Complete Rules state the principle directly: “Documentary feature films submitted in this category may also qualify for awards in other categories if they meet the specified requirements and submission deadlines.” That language allows the same film to be considered in more than one category, but it does not waive any requirement in the additional category.
Why the distinction matters
Best Picture and Documentary Feature are separate category decisions. A film’s identity as a documentary may explain why it is being submitted to Documentary Feature, but that label does not answer every question about Best Picture. The Academy still applies the Best Picture rules, forms and deadlines to the Best Picture entry.
The distinction also affects campaign planning and internal record keeping. A producer may discuss the same film with voters in connection with both categories, yet the administrative file must show that each category’s submission was completed correctly. A confirmation for one category is not proof that the other category was entered.
Nothing in the cross-category permission converts one nomination into another. If a film is nominated for Documentary Feature, that does not place it on the Best Picture ballot. Conversely, a Best Picture entry does not remove the film from Documentary Feature consideration. The outcomes can diverge at every stage.
What a documentary must do for Documentary Feature
A film must first qualify under the Documentary Feature rules and be submitted through that category’s process. The category entry establishes the film’s documentary-feature consideration; it does not serve as a universal entry for every other Oscar category.
The exact requirements and deadlines can change by awards year. For the 99th Awards, the Academy’s Rules & Eligibility page and the current Documentary Feature FAQ are the controlling references. A filmmaker should use those documents for the cycle in which the film is being submitted rather than carrying forward a deadline or technical requirement from the 98th Awards.
What the Documentary Feature entry accomplishes
- It places the film into the Documentary Feature category’s eligibility and voting process.
- It allows the film to seek other categories only if it separately satisfies those categories’ rules.
- It does not, by itself, create a Best Picture entry.
What is required for Best Picture consideration
The 99th Awards Documentary Feature Film FAQ answers the practical question directly: “No. A General Entry form must be submitted to be considered for Best Picture and/or all other craft categories.” The FAQ also requires a RAISE form for Best Picture consideration.
Therefore, a documentary seeking both categories should treat Best Picture as a separate submission track:
- Confirm Best Picture eligibility. Check the current 99th Awards complete rules for every Best Picture requirement, including any theatrical, distribution, timing or administrative conditions that apply to the film.
- Submit the General Entry form. Documentary Feature entry does not substitute for this form.
- Complete the RAISE form. The current FAQ identifies this additional form as required for Best Picture consideration.
- Meet the Best Picture deadline. The film must satisfy the deadline and submission requirements for Best Picture, even if its Documentary Feature submission was already completed.
- Retain confirmation of both entries. Keep records showing the Documentary Feature submission and the General Entry and RAISE submissions for Best Picture.
The FAQ identifies the forms, but the complete rules govern the full set of Best Picture conditions. Requirements can be revised from one awards cycle to the next, so a prior-year checklist is not a substitute for the current rules.

Eligibility, submission and nomination are different stages
These terms describe separate points in the process:
Eligibility
Eligibility means the film meets a category’s substantive and procedural rules. A documentary can be eligible for Documentary Feature, Best Picture, both, or neither. Eligibility is assessed under each category’s rules, not inferred from the film’s label as a documentary.
Submission or entry
Submission is the formal act of putting the film forward for consideration. For Documentary Feature, that means completing the category’s submission. For Best Picture in the 99th Awards cycle, the Academy says a General Entry form and a RAISE form are also required.

Nomination
A nomination comes only after the Academy’s category-specific voting and selection process. Being eligible or submitting the required forms does not guarantee a nomination. A film could be entered in both categories and receive no nomination, one nomination, or nominations in both.
This distinction also explains why “a documentary can compete in more than one Oscar category” is accurate only with a qualification: the film may seek multiple categories, but each category remains an independent decision.
How the rule has been expressed across awards cycles
98th Awards: explicit cross-category permission
The 98th Awards Complete Rules, Rule Thirteen, VI.A., provided the clearest broad statement: documentary feature films submitted in Documentary Feature may also qualify for awards in other categories if they meet those categories’ specified requirements and submission deadlines.
The Academy’s November 21, 2025 eligibility announcement likewise said that documentary features submitted in the category may qualify for Best Picture. Those materials establish the cross-category principle for that cycle.
99th Awards: separate Best Picture entry emphasized
For the 99th Awards, the Academy’s Documentary Feature Film FAQ adds the operational detail that matters most to applicants: Documentary Feature entry does not automatically enter a film for Best Picture. The General Entry form and RAISE form are required for Best Picture consideration.
The Academy’s Rules & Eligibility page identifies the 99th Awards rules and Documentary Feature FAQs as the current-cycle materials. Use the complete 99th Awards rules for requirements and deadlines not stated in the FAQ.

A historical eligibility count is not a current forecast
The Academy’s January 8, 2026 announcement reported 201 films eligible for Documentary Feature consideration for the 98th Awards. That number belongs to that completed awards cycle. It should not be treated as the number of eligible films for the 99th Awards or any later cycle.
A practical checklist for filmmakers
Before assuming a documentary is entered in both categories, verify each item independently:

If any item is missing, do not assume the Documentary Feature entry cures the omission. Contact the Academy through the current awards guidance and resolve the issue under the applicable cycle’s procedures.
Common misunderstandings
“If it is a documentary, it can automatically enter Best Picture.”
False. Documentary status does not create automatic Best Picture entry. The current FAQ requires a General Entry form and a RAISE form for Best Picture consideration.
“Entering Best Picture removes the film from Documentary Feature.”
False. The rules permit cross-category consideration. A film can remain in Documentary Feature consideration while also seeking Best Picture, as long as it meets both categories’ requirements.
“Meeting Documentary Feature rules proves Best Picture eligibility.”
False. Each category has its own requirements, deadlines and process. Documentary Feature qualification is not a blanket certification for Best Picture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Submission means nomination.”
False. Submission places a film into consideration. Nominations are decided through the Academy’s category processes and are not guaranteed by filing the forms.
How to organize a two-category submission
A production can reduce avoidable errors by creating a category-by-category checklist rather than one master item labeled “Oscar submission.” The first column should list Documentary Feature requirements and its deadline. The second should list Best Picture requirements, the General Entry form, the RAISE form and the applicable Best Picture deadline. Mark the responsible person and the date each item was completed.
Keep the rules version with the checklist. The 98th Awards rules and announcements are useful for understanding the cross-category principle, but they do not establish the 99th Awards deadlines or every current eligibility condition. Label older documents as historical so that a prior-cycle date is not mistaken for a live deadline.

Save copies of submitted forms, confirmation emails or portal receipts, and any supporting materials requested by the Academy. If a form is corrected or resubmitted, retain both the original record and the final confirmation. These records help answer a simple but important question later: was the film merely discussed for a category, or was it formally entered?

Three possible outcomes
Entered and nominated in both: The film qualifies under both sets of rules, completes both submission tracks, and is selected in both category voting processes. The cross-category rule permits this result.
Entered in both but nominated in one: The film can be considered in both categories while receiving only a Documentary Feature nomination or only a Best Picture nomination. A nomination in one category does not compel a nomination in the other.
Eligible for one category only: The film may satisfy Documentary Feature requirements but fail a Best Picture condition, or the reverse. In that situation, it should be treated as a one-category entry; the other submission cannot be assumed or inferred.
These are process outcomes, not predictions about a film’s artistic prospects. The official materials establish permission to seek both categories and the forms needed for Best Picture consideration; they do not promise a particular voting result.
Questions to ask when checking a current cycle
- Am I reading the complete rules for the correct awards year?
- Does the Documentary Feature FAQ answer only the documentary-entry question, or does the complete rules document add another requirement?
- Has the General Entry form actually been filed for Best Picture, rather than merely started?
- Has the RAISE form been completed and submitted for Best Picture consideration?
- Are the Best Picture theatrical, release, timing and administrative conditions satisfied under the current rules?
- Are the Documentary Feature and Best Picture deadlines different?
- Do the submission confirmations identify the correct film, category and awards cycle?
When an answer is unclear, use the Academy’s current Rules & Eligibility page and contact the Academy under the procedures for that cycle. Do not rely on a social-media summary, a previous year’s form or an assumption that one category’s entry covers another.
What can be stated with confidence
The official rules and current FAQ establish three points: cross-category consideration is allowed; Documentary Feature entry is not automatic Best Picture entry; and Best Picture consideration requires the additional General Entry and RAISE forms identified by the 99th Awards FAQ.
Those materials do not, by themselves, establish a particular named film that received nominations in both categories in the same year. The rule answers whether it is permitted, not whether a specific film achieved that outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same documentary be submitted for Best Picture and Documentary Feature?

Does a Documentary Feature submission automatically enter Best Picture?
No. The 99th Awards Documentary Feature FAQ says a General Entry form is required for Best Picture consideration, and a RAISE form must also be completed for Best Picture.
Does a Best Picture entry cancel Documentary Feature eligibility?
No. The categories are separate. A film may remain in Documentary Feature consideration while also being entered for Best Picture, provided it satisfies both sets of requirements.
If a film is eligible, is it guaranteed a nomination?
No. Eligibility and submission place the film into consideration. Nominations are decided through the Academy’s category-specific voting processes.
Are the deadlines the same for both categories?
Not necessarily. Each category has its own rules and deadlines. Check the complete rules for the relevant awards cycle rather than assuming one deadline applies to both.

The Bottom Line
A documentary can pursue nominations for both Best Picture and Best Documentary Feature. It must qualify under both categories’ rules, submit the Documentary Feature entry, and separately complete the General Entry and RAISE forms required for Best Picture consideration in the 99th Awards guidance. Eligibility, submission and nomination remain separate stages.
