Can a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet Handle 24/7 YouTube Streaming?

A DigitalOcean Basic Droplet may handle a tested relay of pre-encoded video, but it does not guarantee 24/7 streaming. Encoding, CPU variability and outbound transfer determine whether it is a sensible fit.

Sometimes—but a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. It may be suitable for relaying an already-encoded video feed if the Droplet has enough memory and outbound transfer and a long, representative test stays healthy. If it must encode video in real time, or variable CPU access is unacceptable, consider a dedicated-CPU Droplet. DigitalOcean describes Basic as shared CPU for low-to-medium-load work, and identifies live streaming and video encoding as CPU-Optimized use cases. The choice depends on the workload, bitrate, network allowance and your tolerance for interruptions—not just the plan name.

What a Basic Droplet can—and cannot—tell you

DigitalOcean Basic Droplets use shared CPU. A Droplet can access full hyperthreads, but that access is not guaranteed; performance can depend on neighboring Droplets. DigitalOcean describes Basic as suited to low-to-medium-load applications with occasional brief bursts. Its Basic family ranges from 1–8 vCPUs and 1–32 GB of memory, but those family-wide figures do not establish that any particular size can encode your stream or keep it online continuously. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance was last verified on September 3, 2026.

There is no published certification here that a specific Basic configuration can sustain a YouTube stream 24/7, nor a benchmark comparing a particular Basic size with a particular dedicated-CPU size for your video. Treat Basic as a candidate to validate, not an uptime promise.

First decide whether the Droplet relays or encodes

Relaying an already-encoded feed

Relaying a feed that is already encoded is generally less CPU-intensive than encoding video in real time. A Basic Droplet may be reasonable for this use if the intended stream runs reliably in a representative test and CPU, memory, outbound bandwidth and YouTube stream health remain acceptable. This is a practical inference from DigitalOcean’s shared-CPU guidance, not a published benchmark.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Encoding video in real time

Real-time encoding can make CPU access a limiting factor. DigitalOcean lists live streaming and video encoding among the uses for CPU-Optimized Droplets, which provide dedicated CPU. Consider that class if the Droplet is encoding, CPU remains high, dropped frames or stream-health problems continue under representative conditions, or the workload cannot tolerate variable CPU access. Dedicated CPU is a more predictable option, not a guarantee that a stream will never fail.

Consideration Basic shared CPU Dedicated CPU / CPU-Optimized
CPU access Shared; access to full hyperthreads is not guaranteed. Dedicated CPU, intended for CPU-intensive workloads.
Best fit for this decision Potentially suitable for relaying an encoded feed after testing. Worth considering for real-time encoding or when predictable CPU access matters.
Documented 24/7 YouTube capacity for a particular size Not stated by DigitalOcean. Not stated by DigitalOcean.

DigitalOcean’s CPU plan descriptions are in its plan-selection guidance; its Droplet pricing and configuration should be checked for the specific size and transfer allowance you plan to use.

Estimate bitrate, headroom and outbound transfer

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Droplet can encode or deliver those settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. If you configure a backup stream, include its bitrate in the calculation rather than budgeting only for the primary. The recommendation is about network headroom, not a promise of stable throughput. Details are in YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Convert a continuous bitrate into data volume

At a sustained 5 Mbps, the video payload alone is about 54 GB over 24 hours: 5 megabits per second Ă— 86,400 seconds, converted to bytes. Actual transfer can differ with stream behavior and protocol overhead. At that pace, a continuously running stream uses about 1.62 TB over 30 days before overhead. That monthly estimate is arithmetic from the sustained bitrate, not a published DigitalOcean or YouTube figure.

Check the exact Droplet’s included outbound transfer and any charges for usage beyond its allowance before going live. DigitalOcean documents a maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets, but that ceiling is not the included monthly transfer allowance, a guarantee of application-level throughput, or an uptime commitment. Plan-specific allowances and limits are covered in DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits documentation.

Validate the complete setup before relying on it

  1. Confirm YouTube eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check current eligibility in YouTube Studio and review its live-streaming setup guidance.
  2. Choose the actual workload. Establish whether the Droplet only relays encoded video or encodes it in real time. Record the intended resolution, frame rate, primary bitrate and any backup bitrate.
  3. Choose a YouTube-supported protocol and settings. Use RTMPS where supported and select settings from YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Include the recommended 20% network headroom above the combined primary and backup bitrate.
  4. Check the Droplet’s resources and transfer allowance. Select a size with adequate memory for the actual software and workload. Confirm the plan’s included outbound transfer and account for the stream’s expected monthly volume; do not treat the maximum network throughput as the transfer allowance.
  5. Run a representative, long-duration test. Test the same video, encoder or relay process, resolution, bitrate and network path you intend to use. A short preview can catch configuration errors, but a longer test is more useful for exposing recurring resource or connection problems. YouTube advises testing and checking the preview.
  6. Monitor both ends. Watch CPU, memory and network activity on the Droplet, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Arrange to detect and restart an interrupted encoder or connection; a virtual machine does not automatically make the streaming process self-recovering.
  7. Reassess based on observed failures. If resource pressure, dropped frames or stream-health issues persist, reduce encoding load or move to dedicated CPU for more predictable CPU access. Investigate bandwidth, transfer limits and connection recovery separately; changing CPU class will not fix every failure.

YouTube’s operational recommendations are in its streaming tips. Testing and monitoring reduce avoidable surprises; they do not establish guaranteed 24/7 availability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than manage a Droplet and streaming process, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode. Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI is available alongside cards. Start your free StreamNeo day.
