First distinguish encoding or rendering lag from dropped frames caused by the connection to YouTube, then reduce the workload or investigate capacity based on measured evidence.
Identify what is actually failing
Record the exact symptom while the problem is happening. “Encoding overloaded,” rendering lag, dropped frames, reconnects, and errors in YouTube Live Control Room point to different parts of the streaming path. Do not treat “dropped frames” as a synonym for every kind of stutter: OBS associates dropped frames and disconnections with the connection between the encoder and the remote ingest server (OBS connection troubleshooting).
- Encoding overload or rendering lag: investigate the encoder’s workload, host resources, scene complexity, and output settings.
- Dropped frames or disconnections: investigate the outbound network path to YouTube ingest.
- YouTube stream-health errors: check the encoder output and ingest settings, including codec, bitrate, and keyframes.
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing the output in the encoder or a local recording, and testing outbound connection strength (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting). CPU use is useful evidence, but a single CPU reading does not identify every possible bottleneck. Watch the encoder’s own performance indicators while reproducing the issue.
Reduce encoder workload in controlled steps
Change one thing at a time, then retest with representative movement and audio. This makes it easier to tell which change helped.

- Lower output resolution or frame rate if your quality requirements allow. These settings affect the amount of work required to render and encode each frame. Compare performance before and after each change.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Remove or disable unnecessary sources, filters, and other known resource-intensive elements, then test again. OBS’s encoding performance guidance recommends leaving resources available for OBS and reducing workload when output is choppy or encoding is overloaded.
- Close only workloads you know are unnecessary. Retest after each change rather than making several changes at once.
- Check whether a compatible hardware encoder is genuinely available. OBS hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU, but support depends on the hardware and configuration (OBS hardware encoding). On EC2, verify that your particular instance, operating system, drivers, and encoder can access a supported device before selecting a hardware encoder. Do not assume that an EC2 virtual machine exposes one.
Verify YouTube’s ingest settings
Confirm the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and an interval no longer than four seconds. Its current guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; use the recommendations for the codec and output you actually select.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion values, not universal settings for every codec. YouTube lists different values for H.265 and AV1. A correct bitrate does not show that the host can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate quickly enough.
Before an event, run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitor stream health. YouTube specifically recommends including representative audio and video movement in the test.

Test the outbound connection separately
If the encoder’s output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects, test outbound connectivity to the ingest service and investigate the network path. YouTube recommends testing outbound connection strength; OBS likewise treats dropped frames as a connection issue between the encoder and ingest server (YouTube troubleshooting; OBS connection troubleshooting). Do not respond to a connection symptom by changing encoder workload unless the encoder also shows a performance problem.
Decide whether EC2 capacity is the bottleneck
Consider a different EC2 configuration only after checking the encoder, workload, output settings, and network path. The right capacity depends on the particular encoder and codec, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, access to compatible hardware encoding, and what the measurements show. The available guidance does not establish a universally suitable EC2 instance family or size for OBS or another unspecified encoder.

AWS Elemental Live documentation discusses CPU, I/O bandwidth, network input, codec, pixels per second, and encoding settings as factors in that product’s performance (AWS Elemental Live User Guide). That is useful context for the kinds of workload variables to examine, but it is product-specific—not a sizing recommendation for OBS or your EC2 instance. If your measurements point to host-resource limits after configuration and network checks, assess EC2 capacity against the actual workload rather than upgrading on the warning alone.
