Camoji was a real CamSoda product announced on March 27, 2019. It allowed performers to appear in live cam rooms through customizable animated avatars rather than showing their faces and bodies directly. Viewers could chat with the avatar, send tokens, and trigger movements. But “anonymous” meant primarily visually anonymous to viewers—not unknown to the platform or protected from every form of identification.
What was Camoji?
Camoji was an avatar-based category and performance system created by CamSoda for live adult entertainment. Instead of broadcasting a conventional webcam image, a performer created a digital alter ego and used that character while interacting with viewers.
CamSoda presented the idea as a way for existing and prospective cam models to participate without putting their real appearance on display. The avatar could resemble the performer or take on a deliberately different identity, giving the performer a character, visual brand, and degree of separation from their offline persona.
The contemporary launch coverage described Camoji as a live avatar interface—not as a fully autonomous virtual performer. The available reporting does not establish that Camoji characters were powered by an AI conversational engine. The performer remained the human presence behind the interaction.

VentureBeat’s 2019 report covered the announcement, while Sex Tech Guide also described the avatar-based performance and token tipping.
How the avatar performances reportedly worked
- Create an avatar: The performer used CamSoda’s setup prompts to build a personalized digital character.
- Choose the character’s appearance: Reported options included hairstyles, breast size, butt shape, and other physical or wardrobe characteristics. Those examples should not be treated as a complete product catalogue.
- Enter the Camoji category: The finished avatar could be listed in a dedicated Camoji area of CamSoda.
- Interact with viewers: Viewers communicated through real-time chat, as they would in a conventional cam room.
- Respond to tips and commands: Paid tips or tokens could trigger avatar movements. The launch descriptions mentioned actions such as dancing and twerking, along with sexual movements.
- Potentially offer private shows: Contemporary coverage said viewers could request private Camoji shows, although the exact launch implementation and terms are not fully documented in surviving sources.
This appears to have been a system of animated responses and human-mediated interaction. The reporting does not provide enough detail to determine how much movement was manually controlled, selected from preset actions, or managed through a combination of the two.
What was planned for later?
CamSoda reportedly intended to add face-tracking and body-motion-capture capabilities at a later stage. That distinction matters: the launch coverage discussed these features as future plans, not as capabilities confirmed to be operational when Camoji was announced.
It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Camoji as a proven full-body motion-capture platform from day one. Nor does the available evidence show that every Camoji performance used live tracking.
Why CamSoda marketed it as anonymous
The product addressed a familiar barrier to adult cam work: fear of being recognized. A potential performer might worry about family members, employers, friends, clients, or professional contacts discovering their work. An animated character could conceal the most immediately recognizable features—the performer’s face and visible body—while still allowing live interaction and monetization.

That proposition also gave Camoji a branding angle. A performer could build a consistent fictional persona rather than relying on a conventional webcam identity. The format had potential appeal to viewers interested in animation, gaming characters, virtual influencers, and novelty performance.
However, the privacy promise should be attributed to CamSoda’s launch messaging rather than treated as a demonstrated guarantee. The available research contains no independent evidence showing that Camoji increased earnings, audience retention, or the number of people willing to become models.

The most accurate description is “visually anonymous, not legally or operationally anonymous.”
An avatar could hide a performer’s face and direct on-camera appearance from viewers. It did not necessarily hide the performer’s identity from CamSoda, payment providers, tax authorities, studios, or anyone able to connect the account to other personal information.
CamSoda-linked model documentation says prospective models must upload identification and verify their accounts. That means a fictional avatar would not automatically allow someone to participate without the platform knowing who they were. The documentation also describes model earnings through user tips or tokens and show-rate arrangements, but surviving secondary figures should not be treated as a verified Camoji-specific payout schedule.

Other possible exposure points included:
- A recognizable voice, accent, speech pattern, or laugh.
- Distinctive mannerisms, body movements, or gestures—especially if motion capture became part of the setup.
- Room backgrounds, clothing, jewelry, tattoos, or objects visible in the broadcast.
- Names, locations, workplaces, relationships, or social-media accounts disclosed during chat.
- Reused usernames, profile images, email addresses, or personal branding.
- Payment, tax, account, studio, and platform records.
- Screen recordings, reposts, leaks, harassment, or attempts at social engineering.
A wholly fictional avatar could reduce visual recognition, but it would not remove verification requirements or guarantee that viewers could not connect the performer’s behavior and voice to an existing identity.

There is no reliable evidence in the launch reporting that Camoji characters were autonomous AI performers. The product was described as a way for a human model to interact with fans through an animated representation.
That is materially different from CamSoda’s later AI girlfriend product, which currently advertises AI-generated text, voice, images, memory, and custom characters on CamSoda.ai. Camoji should not be retroactively described as the same kind of AI companion service.
The distinction also affects audience expectations. A human-controlled avatar can answer personally, improvise, negotiate private shows, and respond to a room’s mood. An automated character would involve different questions about disclosure, consent, moderation, and the authenticity of the interaction. The available evidence supports the first description, not the second.
How could performers earn money?
The reported monetization model centered on viewer tips in CamSoda tokens, with private shows also discussed. CamSoda’s model documentation describes earnings through user tips or tokens and says models can set rates for shows.

Those general model-payment references do not establish a special 2019 Camoji payout rate, typical earnings, or commercial success. There is no reliable evidence in the available material for the number of Camoji performers, viewer adoption, average income, retention, or profitability. Camoji may have been an interesting product experiment without becoming a major market category.
Performers working through a studio could also face a different payment arrangement. CamSoda-linked documentation says studios can receive platform payments and then pay models, so an individual performer’s practical earnings would depend on the applicable studio agreement as well as platform rules.

An avatar can reduce one kind of exposure, but it does not make a live performance risk-free. Anyone considering a similar workflow should treat the avatar as one privacy layer among many:
- Use a separate email address, username, payment identity where legally permitted, and social accounts.
- Remove recognizable backgrounds, documents, mail, photographs, and personal objects from the performance space.
- Assume that every live show can be recorded and redistributed.
- Review identity-verification, payout, tax, moderation, blocking, and content-removal policies before signing up.
- Avoid revealing locations, employers, schedules, family details, or links to personal profiles.
- Check whether any voice-changing or external avatar software is permitted by the platform.
- Understand who controls recordings and what remedies exist if content is reposted.
- Do not imply that viewers are speaking with an autonomous AI character if a human performer is controlling the interaction.
Independent avatar tools such as OBS Studio, VTube Studio, VSeeFace, Animaze, and VRoid Studio represent a broader creator ecosystem, but their current licensing, commercial-use rules, technical requirements, and adult-content policies vary. They should not be assumed to reproduce Camoji’s platform integration.
Is Camoji still available?
The evidence confirms the March 27, 2019 launch, but it does not verify a current Camoji signup page, category, avatar-creation workflow, payout policy, or relaunch. It also does not establish a reliable shutdown date or prove whether the feature was renamed, absorbed into another product, or discontinued.

As of 2026, the safest wording is that Camoji was a reported 2019 CamSoda launch whose current availability has not been verified. Current CamSoda-related material prominently promotes a separate AI girlfriend service instead. That is not evidence that Camoji remains active, and it should not be used as a present-day instruction to “go to the Camoji category.”
Why Camoji mattered
Camoji captured an important transition in online adult entertainment: the move from the performer’s physical webcam image toward character-based, avatar-mediated performance. It combined live cam economics—chat, tips, and private shows—with ideas familiar from gaming avatars, virtual influencers, and later virtual-performer culture.
Its central promise was narrower and more credible than total anonymity. Camoji could make a performer less visually identifiable and give them a repeatable character brand. It could not erase verification records, personal disclosures, voice recognition, recording risks, or the possibility of being connected to an offline identity.
In that sense, Camoji was best understood as an early experiment in human performance through a digital body—not proof that adult camming had become anonymous or autonomous.
