For a first test, try 720p at 30 fps (720p30) and set the bitrate to a level your mobile upload connection can sustain consistently. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; CameraFi’s guidance is to keep the stream bitrate around 75% of measured upload speed. That makes roughly 10.7 Mbps of steady upload a calculated starting point for an 8 Mbps stream, or 18.7 Mbps for 14 Mbps—not guaranteed thresholds. If speed fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
A higher resolution by itself will not make a stream sharper if the bitrate or connection cannot support it. The right setting depends on resolution, frame rate, upload stability, movement in the picture, and how the phone performs during the stream.
Choose a bitrate that matches your resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations differ by resolution and frame rate. Use the row that matches the settings you actually select; these figures are encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular mobile connection can sustain them.
| Stream setting | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | Approximate steady upload at CameraFi’s 75% heuristic |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 18.7 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 22.7 Mbps |
The upload figures in the last column are calculations: divide YouTube’s recommended stream bitrate by 0.75, following CameraFi’s 2021 headroom guidance. They are not separately published CameraFi thresholds. Measure upload speed repeatedly where you will stream; if results vary, plan around the reliable capacity rather than the best single result. YouTube’s figures here are specifically for H.264, and should not be substituted for its separate AV1 or H.265 recommendations. Why CameraFi Live can look blurry on YouTube
The playback quality may be set low
Check the YouTube player’s highest available quality before changing CameraFi settings. A low playback selection can make the picture appear soft even when the stream itself is not persistently pixelated. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that fact alone does not establish why any particular stream looks blurry.
The bitrate may not fit the connection
If upload capacity drops below the rate the encoder is trying to send, the stream may become unstable or lose detail, especially during motion. CameraFi advises basing the bitrate on measured upload speed, allowing headroom, and accounting for variation. Lowering bitrate can help a connection keep up, but it can also reduce image detail; if necessary, lower resolution as well.

Motion and phone performance expose limits
Fast movement is harder to encode cleanly than a still scene. A picture that looks fine while the phone is stationary may break up during a performance, moving camera shot, or active event. CameraFi also advises closing background apps and avoiding overheating, since device load can affect performance.
Set up a useful test in CameraFi Live
- Check playback first. In YouTube, select the highest available playback quality and see whether the blur persists. Distinguish a low playback selection from persistent pixelation before changing stream settings.
- Use one network at a time. Choose Wi-Fi or mobile data for the test rather than allowing a transition between them; CameraFi warns that switching connections can disconnect a live stream. Test the actual connection available at the event location rather than assuming one network type is always better.
- Measure upload repeatedly at the streaming location. Use upload speed, not download speed, and note whether results fluctuate. CameraFi recommends setting the bitrate around 75% of measured upload speed as headroom guidance. Its article cautions that this does not account for streaming-platform server status.
- Start with 720p30. Select a bitrate the connection can sustain reliably. If the H.264 encoder is in use, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for this setting. If repeated upload checks do not support that rate with headroom, reduce the bitrate and/or resolution rather than treating the recommendation as a mandatory minimum.
- Test with representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real event. Watch the YouTube stream-health messages during the test; a still preview alone may not reveal problems that appear in motion.
- Try 1080p30 only after a stable lower-resolution test. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. CameraFi’s 75% heuristic implies roughly 18.7 Mbps steady upload as a calculated planning figure. If the connection cannot sustain the higher rate without instability, stay at a lower setting.
- Reduce avoidable phone and wireless strain. Close background apps and keep the phone from overheating. If Bluetooth is active while using Wi-Fi, CameraFi recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi because 2.4 GHz may interfere with Bluetooth. Its advice to prefer LTE over 5G is dated general guidance, not a universal rule; test the connection you will actually use.
CameraFi’s guidance does not establish a universal menu path or guarantee that every app version exposes each encoder control. Use the resolution and bitrate controls available in your version rather than relying on an assumed setting name.
