Butterfly Ending, Explained: Who Attacked Eunju—and What the Cliffhanger Really Means

The Butterfly finale leaves Eunju critically wounded, Rebecca missing, and David questioning everything. Here is what the cliffhanger confirms—and what it deliberately leaves unresolved.

Spoilers for all six episodes of Butterfly. The finale leaves Eunju gravely wounded, Rebecca missing, and David facing the possibility that his daughter has returned to the assassin identity Juno created. Rebecca is the obvious suspect—but the series never shows her attacking Eunju, and no character confirms that she did it. The result is a deliberate cliffhanger, not a solved murder mystery.

What happens at the end of Butterfly?

David and Rebecca appear to win. With help from Oliver, Juno’s son, they turn the evidence against Juno and Caddis, the organization David once helped create. Oliver’s testimony helps expose the group’s international crimes, while Juno is forced to flee the country on a private jet rather than face capture.

For a brief moment, David and Rebecca seem ready to build something resembling a family. David is considering a move to the United States, Rebecca is unusually warm toward Minhee, and she appears to be making an effort to accept Eunju. The fragile reconciliation seems to offer the season a path toward a relatively hopeful ending.

That hope collapses during the family meal. Rebecca follows Eunju into the restaurant bathroom. David later finds Eunju badly wounded, her throat cut, while Rebecca has disappeared. The episode ends by placing Rebecca at the center of the crime without showing the crime itself.

That distinction matters. The finale establishes that Eunju was attacked and left in critical condition. It does not establish that Eunju died, and it does not definitively establish that Rebecca was the attacker.

Did Rebecca kill Eunju?

The strongest immediate reading is yes—or at least that Rebecca is the person the show wants viewers to suspect.

  • Rebecca is the last known person to enter the bathroom with Eunju.
  • She disappears immediately after Eunju is found wounded.
  • The attack occurs just as the family begins imagining a normal future.
  • Rebecca has the training, experience, and emotional history to carry out the attack.

Rebecca has never been an ordinary person trying to leave an ordinary past behind. She is exceptionally skilled at killing, and throughout the season she resists David’s belief that she can simply abandon that part of herself. Juno’s appeal has always been that she accepts Rebecca as she is. David, by contrast, wants to save her—and, at least in part, wants her to become someone else.

Under this interpretation, the bathroom scene represents Rebecca rejecting David’s version of redemption. The moment a stable family life becomes possible, she returns to the identity that has always given her control: the trained assassin shaped by Juno and Caddis.

But “Rebecca probably did it” is not the same as “the show confirmed Rebecca did it.” The camera withholds the decisive action. Viewers do not see Rebecca pick up a weapon, cut Eunju’s throat, or leave the scene. The missing image is precisely what leaves room for another explanation.

Could Rebecca have been framed?

Yes. The episode leaves several alternative readings open, even if they are less immediately persuasive than the Rebecca-as-attacker theory.

Juno remains alive, mobile, and connected to a powerful international organization. A Caddis operative could have arranged the attack to make Rebecca look guilty, either to destroy David’s trust in her or to pull Rebecca back into Juno’s orbit. Juno herself could also have been working several steps ahead while pretending to lose.

Another possibility is that Rebecca attacked Eunju—or allowed the attack to happen—as part of a concealed plan to protect the family. That theory is speculative, and the finale offers no confirmation that Rebecca was acting altruistically. It nevertheless fits the show’s pattern of hidden loyalties and incomplete disclosures.

The important point is that the finale is constructed around uncertainty. Rebecca’s disappearance is incriminating, but it is not proof. Until the series supplies a missing event, the responsible conclusion is that Rebecca is the leading suspect, not a confirmed murderer.

Is Rebecca still working for Juno?

The finale also refuses to settle whether Rebecca has truly broken with Juno.

Earlier, Rebecca persuades David not to kill Juno. Her argument is that Juno is part of her, but that showing mercy proves they are not the same person. It sounds like a rejection of Juno’s worldview—and a choice to become someone different.

Yet David later asks Rebecca whether she is still acting as Juno’s agent. Rebecca’s response is inconclusive, and she lies about what Juno told her while she was captive. That lie is one of the finale’s most significant clues. It suggests either that Rebecca is concealing an arrangement with Juno or that she is hiding information for another reason.

There are two main ways to read the relationship:

  1. A covert alliance: Rebecca and Juno may have created a long con, allowing David to believe that Juno had been defeated while Rebecca continued working for her.
  2. Conditioning without active allegiance: Rebecca may genuinely choose David while still being psychologically shaped by Juno. In this version, the attack would show that her violent identity has survived even after her formal break with Caddis.

The season does not choose between those explanations. The uncertainty is part of the conflict between David and Rebecca: David loves his daughter, but he still cannot fully trust her.

What does the finale mean for David?

David accomplishes his external mission. He helps expose the organization he once helped build, turns Oliver into a crucial witness, and prevents Juno from controlling the outcome. Emotionally, however, he ends the season in a worse position than he began it.

David returned to Rebecca’s life because he wanted to save her. He imagined that love, honesty, and family might give her a way out of Juno’s world. But bringing Rebecca close to the family may have placed Eunju and Minhee in danger. The final attack transforms David’s idealism into part of the problem: his attempt to reunite the family may have exposed it to the violence he was trying to escape.

His next decision would be exceptionally difficult. He must determine whether Rebecca is a threat, a victim, a secret ally, or some combination of all three. He may need to protect Rebecca from law enforcement, pursue her as a suspect, or investigate whether someone used her disappearance to frame her. The finale gives him no emotionally safe option.

What happens to Eunju?

Eunju’s fate is unknown. She is shown severely wounded, but the series does not definitively say that she is dead. Statements discussed by the cast likewise treated her survival as unresolved rather than as an established fact.

Therefore, any explanation that says “Rebecca killed Eunju” or “Eunju dies” goes beyond what the episode confirms. The precise ending is: Eunju is found critically injured after Rebecca follows her into the bathroom, and the episode cuts away before revealing whether Eunju survives or identifying the attacker with certainty.

What happens to Juno and Caddis?

Juno escapes on a private jet. Oliver’s testimony helps David and Rebecca implicate Juno and Caddis, but the organization is not cleanly dismantled on screen and Juno is not captured.

That leaves Juno with two immediate problems: evading the authorities and dealing with the loss of Oliver, whose testimony has damaged her position. The series closes with her still at large, even though the operation she built has been seriously exposed.

Juno’s escape also keeps her connected to the Eunju mystery. If Rebecca was framed, Juno is an obvious possible architect. If Rebecca is still working for Juno, the private-jet escape may be only the visible part of a larger plan.

Why the ending remains unresolved

The cliffhanger is not merely a last-minute twist. It completes the season’s central question: can Rebecca separate herself from the identity Juno imposed on her?

A conventional ending would have answered that question by showing Rebecca choose David and family, or by confirming that she remained loyal to Juno. Instead, the finale makes both outcomes unstable. Rebecca appears to choose family, then vanishes after Eunju is attacked. She appears to reject Juno, then lies about their last conversation. David appears to regain his daughter, then has to question whether he ever understood her.

The ending can consequently be read as either a return to violence or a false appearance of betrayal. In both versions, the family’s reconciliation has failed. Trust has not been restored; it has merely been postponed until the next revelation.

Was there supposed to be a second season?

Cast interviews discussed possible directions for a continuation, including Eunju’s survival, Rebecca’s disappearance, the identity of the attacker, and whether Rebecca remained connected to Juno. Daniel Dae Kim also suggested that the attack would force serious changes and soul-searching for the characters, while the international nature of David and Rebecca’s work could have expanded the story beyond Korea.

Those comments describe possible future storylines, not events that were produced. No official second-season plot resolves the cliffhanger.

Prime Video canceled Butterfly after one season on October 10, 2025, about two months after the six-episode series premiered and released its finale on August 13, 2025. As a result, the Rebecca-and-Eunju mystery remains unresolved on television. The cancellation turns what might have been a temporary season-ending question into the series’ permanent on-screen ending.

Does the Butterfly graphic novel explain the TV ending?

No. The series is adapted from the BOOM! Studios graphic novel created by Arash Amel, written by Amel and Marguerite Bennett, and illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone in the expanded edition. The comic follows a deep-cover agent who is framed for murder and led back to the father she believed had died.

The television version changes the setting and substantially expands the father-daughter and Korean family story. The source material is related background, not an official continuation of the television cliffhanger. Readers interested in comparing the adaptation with its source can look for the Butterfly graphic novel, but it should not be treated as the missing final episode.

The most accurate answer to the Butterfly ending

Rebecca is the apparent attacker, but the finale does not prove that she cut Eunju’s throat. Eunju is gravely wounded, not confirmed dead. Rebecca may have reverted to the assassin identity Juno cultivated, may still be secretly working with Juno, or may have been framed as part of a larger Caddis operation. David is left with the same problem that defined his relationship with Rebecca throughout the season: he loves her, but he does not know whether he can trust her.

Because the series was canceled after its first season, viewers will not receive a television answer unless the story is revived elsewhere. The cliffhanger is therefore intentionally ambiguous in design but permanently unresolved in practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Rebecca definitely kill Eunju in Butterfly?

No. Rebecca is the leading suspect because she was the last person seen with Eunju and disappears after Eunju is found wounded, but the episode never shows Rebecca committing the attack or confirms that she was responsible.

Is Eunju dead at the end of Butterfly?

The series does not confirm Eunju’s death. She is found severely wounded and in critical condition, but her survival is left unknown.

Is Rebecca still working for Juno?

The finale does not resolve this. Rebecca may be part of a covert arrangement with Juno, or she may have genuinely chosen David while remaining psychologically shaped by Juno’s training and ideology.

Will Butterfly Season 2 answer the cliffhanger?

No Season 2 was produced. Prime Video canceled the series on October 10, 2025, leaving the Rebecca, Eunju, and Juno questions unresolved on television.

Does the graphic novel resolve the TV series’ ending?

No. The graphic novel is related source material, but the television adaptation changes its setting and family storyline. It should not be considered a continuation or explanation of the TV cliffhanger.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Butterfly ends with Eunju critically wounded and Rebecca missing. Everything points toward Rebecca as the attacker, but the show deliberately withholds confirmation. Since Prime Video canceled the series after one season, the question of whether Rebecca betrayed her family, remained loyal to Juno, or was framed has no official television resolution.
