The comparison is not just a fan theory. Developer Mike Klubnika has said that Inscryption was the game’s main inspiration, particularly its camera movement around the table. But Buckshot Roulette is not a card-game clone or a sequel. It is a shorter, harsher reinterpretation of the same basic idea: turn a tabletop contest into a horror story.
From an occult card table to an underground nightclub
Inscryption, released on Steam on October 19, 2021, became one of the most acclaimed games of that year. TIME placed it at No. 2 in its list of the 10 best games of 2021, and Ars Technica included it in its top 20. Its appeal came from the way it kept changing shape: a roguelike deck-builder became an escape-room puzzle, a psychological horror story, and an exploration game.
Buckshot Roulette takes a much narrower route. Its entire central drama is a deadly match against an AI dealer. The table is not in a rustic cabin surrounded by occult cards. It sits in an industrial underground club, surrounded by metal railings, machinery, cables, and the pulse of a drum machine. The setting is less haunted woodland and more condemned nightclub, but both games make the arena feel sealed off from ordinary reality.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That visual difference matters. Inscryption creates dread through candlelight, wooden textures, and an opponent who seems to belong to an old ritual. Buckshot Roulette creates it through harsh artificial light, machinery, distorted faces, and the blunt physical presence of a 12-gauge shotgun. One game feels like a cursed campfire story. The other feels like a criminal basement where the entertainment has gone too far.
The game is the horror
Both titles understand that a sinister ruleset can be more disturbing than a conventional monster. In Inscryption, the player is forced to participate in a card game controlled by an adversarial figure. In Buckshot Roulette, the dealer controls the table, explains the contest, and presides over every loaded decision. The threat is not merely losing. It is being made to accept the logic of the game in the first place.
The camera reinforces that relationship. Instead of presenting the action like a conventional first-person shooter, Buckshot Roulette repeatedly draws attention to the tabletop: the weapon, the shells, the items, the opponent, and the player’s limited health. The camera’s movement gives the table a physical identity, a quality Klubnika specifically connected to Inscryption.
This is diegetic horror. The interface is part of the fiction. The objects are not abstract icons floating over the screen; they are things on the table that the player must inspect and use. The result is a game that can make a simple action—checking a shell, operating the shotgun, or passing the turn—feel like a decision with consequences beyond the next number on a health bar.

A shotgun replaces the deck
The biggest difference is mechanical. Inscryption is built around collecting cards, constructing a deck, surviving repeated encounters, and discovering a larger mystery. Buckshot Roulette strips that structure down to a compact probability game.
The weapon is loaded with live and blank shells. Players must determine what they know, what they can infer, and whether to take a shot at the dealer or risk shooting themselves. Items complicate the calculation by changing the information available or altering the value of a turn. Health, shell order, and the ability to manipulate the situation all become part of the same decision.
That makes the game more strategic than the description “a game of random luck” suggests. Uncertainty is central, but the player is not powerless inside it. The useful question is rarely just “What are the odds?” It is “What can I do to improve those odds, preserve information, or make the next turn worse for my opponent?”

Why “Inscryption clone” misses the point
The two games share a structure and mood, not a genre. Inscryption is expansive and deliberately unstable, moving between several kinds of play. Buckshot Roulette is designed to be compact. Its original itch.io listing described a playthrough of roughly 15–20 minutes, and that brevity is part of its impact.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
There is no need for Buckshot Roulette to reproduce Inscryption’s card systems or its exploratory layers. It borrows the feeling of being trapped at a table with an opponent who knows more than you do, then finds a different mechanical expression for that feeling. The shotgun is not a reskinned deck. It is a cleaner instrument for expressing probability, risk, and escalation.
Calling the game a spiritual successor or a grim take on Inscryption is therefore more accurate than calling it a clone. The resemblance is strongest in the presentation: the confined arena, the hostile master of ceremonies, the camera circling the play space, and the idea that the rules themselves are part of the horror.
Which version should you play?
The first release appeared on itch.io for Windows and Linux. It costs $2.99 or more, requires Vulkan, and does not support macOS. That version is a small single-player experience and does not include the leaderboard or multiplayer features offered by the later Steam release.
The Steam edition launched on April 4, 2024, published by CRITICAL REFLEX. It adds online PvP, Steam achievements, leaderboards, new items, the Double or Nothing mode, and the complete soundtrack. These editions should not be treated as feature-equivalent simply because the original game is still available on itch.io.

PC compatibility warning
Vulkan support is a real requirement, not a minor recommendation. A system without compatible Vulkan support may fail to launch the game or render it correctly. Before buying the PC version, check the graphics hardware and driver support rather than relying only on the game’s low apparent visual complexity. The industrial pixel-art presentation does not remove the underlying graphics API requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A small game with a very specific influence
Buckshot Roulette works because it understands what made Inscryption unsettling. The fear does not come only from its imagery. It comes from sitting down, accepting the rules, and realizing that the person explaining the game may also be the person rewriting the terms.
Klubnika’s game removes the deck-building and exploration that made Inscryption broad and unpredictable. In their place is a concentrated contest where every shell, item, and turn carries immediate weight. It is less of a full-length descent into an occult world than a vicious short film you can play through repeatedly.

That is why the comparison is useful. Buckshot Roulette is not trying to be another Inscryption. It is taking the older game’s oppressive tabletop framing and hostile game-master dynamic, then firing them through a much smaller, more brutal machine.
FAQ
Is Buckshot Roulette a sequel to Inscryption?
No. It is a separate game by Mike Klubnika. The developer has cited Inscryption as a major inspiration, especially its camera movement around the table, but Buckshot Roulette has different mechanics, characters, setting, and story.
How are Buckshot Roulette and Inscryption similar?
Both place the player in a confined tabletop game controlled by a threatening opponent. They also use diegetic presentation, rule-based horror, and camera movement that makes the table itself feel like the center of the story.
Is Buckshot Roulette multiplayer?
That depends on the version. The original itch.io release is single-player. The Steam edition adds online PvP, while the Xbox version supports online multiplayer for two to four players and cross-platform multiplayer.
Recommended Free Tools
Can Buckshot Roulette run on a Mac?
The developer’s itch.io listing specifies Windows and Linux and says macOS is unsupported. PC players also need Vulkan support; without compatible Vulkan hardware or drivers, the game may not launch or render properly.
The Bottom Line
Buckshot Roulette is best understood as an inspired reinterpretation of Inscryption’s central horror idea, not as a copy. It keeps the hostile table, the manipulative opponent, and the terror of playing by someone else’s rules, then replaces cards and exploration with live shells, blanks, items, and immediate risk. The result is shorter, more focused, and grim in a distinctly industrial way.
