There is no objective ranking of Bryan Danielson’s best matches, but a strong starting list spans his ROH, WWE (as Daniel Bryan) and AEW years. For story and stakes, start with WrestleMania 30; for technical wrestling, try Zack Sabre Jr.; for a long-form test, watch Hangman Page or MJF. The selections below are a curated guide to different styles and career moments, not a definitive top ten.
How to choose a starting match
“Best” can mean a gripping story, technical detail, a distinctive match format, career importance or chemistry between opponents. These recommendations balance those qualities and accessibility for a new viewer. The core picks cover three eras; the additional selections offer other styles and significant milestones.
Core matches to watch first
Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H — WrestleMania 30 (April 6, 2014)
Choose this for story and immediate stakes. Bryan entered the match framed as an injured underdog, with his shoulder a target. He escaped Triple H’s Pedigree and won with a running knee, earning a place in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship main event later that night. WWE’s retrospective recounts the match and its context.
Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Batista — WrestleMania 30
This is the payoff to the night’s story: Bryan defeated Orton and Batista to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. WWE’s event page reports attendance of 75,167. The result gives the match its career significance; the emotional force comes from seeing the title pursuit reach its conclusion in the main event.
#1 Best Overall
Daniel Bryan vs. Nigel McGuinness — ROH Unified (2006)
For an early-career view of Bryan’s range, this bout put the ROH World and Pure titles at stake. WWE’s retrospective describes a hostile Liverpool crowd, high emotion and a bloody match. Bryan recalled the audience backing English wrestler McGuinness and said that many of their matches could have been chosen. That account is useful context, though it is WWE presenting Bryan’s retrospective rather than a neutral contemporary review.
Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena — SummerSlam 2013
This is a major WWE title-match recommendation and a snapshot of the turn toward Bryan’s “Yes!” era. Bryan said it was his first singles pay-per-view main event and that SummerSlam had been his favorite event as a child. WWE includes his reflection in its career retrospective.
Bryan Danielson vs. Hangman Adam Page — AEW Dynamite: Winter Is Coming (December 15, 2021)
For long-form pacing and an unresolved sporting finish, watch their AEW World Championship match, which ended in a 60-minute time-limit draw. The contrast between Danielson’s methodical approach and Page’s champion’s urgency gives the bout room to build without a conclusive winner. Multiple AEW match retrospectives identify it as a standout; the bloody rematch followed on January 5, 2022.
Bryan Danielson vs. MJF — AEW Revolution (March 5, 2023)
This is the choice for a match built around endurance and a clear structural premise: a 60-minute Iron Man match for the AEW World Championship that went into overtime. Sports Illustrated’s retrospective describes the match as lasting beyond an hour. The clock, score and changing tactics make this a different kind of long match from the Hangman draw.

Bryan Danielson vs. Kenny Omega — AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam (September 22, 2021)
A high-profile dream match from Danielson’s AEW arrival, this ended in a 30-minute time-limit draw. It is a good next choice if you want two elite wrestlers testing each other without a definitive finish. WrestleZone, Sports Illustrated and SEScoops all include it among Danielson’s notable AEW matches.
Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. — AEW WrestleDream (October 1, 2023)
Choose this technical showcase for submissions, counters and transitions. Rather than relying on a large career storyline, the appeal is the evolving grappling contest between two wrestlers known for technical skill. It recurs in independent selections of Danielson’s best AEW work.
Bryan Danielson vs. Will Ospreay — AEW Dynasty (April 21, 2024)
This is a strong pick for a faster, hybrid style. More than one AEW retrospective ranks it near the top of Danielson’s AEW matches, though that placement is editorial judgment rather than an official ranking.
Bryan Danielson vs. Swerve Strickland — AEW All In London (August 25, 2024)
Watch this for the culmination of Danielson’s AEW championship pursuit: he defeated Strickland to win the AEW World Championship. AEW’s official title history records the win and the date. His reign ended when Jon Moxley defeated him at WrestleDream on October 12, 2024; that milestone establishes the title timeline, not a quality ranking.

There is no shortage of alternatives. WWE’s retrospective also names Daniel Bryan matches with CM Punk, Takeshi Morishima, KENTA, William Regal, Sheamus, Cesaro and Seth Rollins. The CM Punk WWE Championship match is especially relevant if you want to see their independent-scene history carried into a pay-per-view title bout. Bryan said of it: “We went out there and we did a lot of wrestling, which you don’t see a lot of anymore.” The Hangman Page rematch is another natural follow-up if the first time-limit draw leaves you wanting a decisive result.
For a broader selection of AEW bouts, WrestleZone, Sports Illustrated and SEScoops have each published Danielson match retrospectives. These are useful guides to recurring critical favorites, not a settled consensus. A broader career list should not be mistaken for an exhaustive one: fans may reasonably favor bouts with KENTA, Morishima, CM Punk or other opponents.
Where to find the matches
Official WWE and AEW pages include archive and match-video references, including an AEW full-match listing for Danielson vs. Page. Current streaming availability can vary by country, rights holder and catalog changes, so check the relevant official video or streaming service in your region rather than assuming every historic bout is available on the same platform.
