Broke is the 2025 contemporary western drama starring Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid. Russell is recognizable from Thunderbolts*, while Quaid is associated with the 2002 baseball film The Rookie. The film follows an injured bareback bronc rider trapped in a spring blizzard and is currently listed on Netflix in the U.S., with digital and DVD options also available.

Broke is the 2025 contemporary western drama behind the headline. Directed and written by Carlyle Eubank, the film stars Wyatt Russell—known to Marvel viewers as John Walker/U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts*—and Dennis Quaid, the star of the 2002 baseball drama The Rookie. It is now listed on Netflix in the United States, alongside paid digital rental and purchase options, although streaming availability can change by date and territory.

The film is not a Marvel spinoff, and it has no connection to the television police procedural also called The Rookie. Those references are simply recognition hooks for two of its leading actors. Broke is a contained survival story about a rodeo rider whose already-fragile life becomes even more dangerous when a freak spring blizzard leaves him injured, ill and exposed to bitter cold.

What is Broke about?

Russell plays True Brandywine, a bareback bronc rider whose professional career is declining. During a spring storm, True becomes trapped in a blizzard and must fight through injury, illness and freezing conditions. His physical struggle is compounded by the consequences of earlier decisions, strained family relationships and the damage associated with a dangerous rodeo career.

Sony Pictures describes the movie as a contemporary western drama. Netflix places it in the drama and western categories and uses wilderness-survival descriptors. The “thriller” label is understandable because the immediate question is whether True can survive the storm, but Broke is not primarily an action film. Its survival premise gives shape to a more introspective story about regret, family, professional decline and the psychological cost of repeatedly risking serious injury.

The film’s rodeo setting also distinguishes it from more familiar wilderness-survival movies. True is not simply an inexperienced traveler caught in bad weather; he is an athlete whose identity and livelihood have been built around physical danger. The blizzard forces him to confront what that life has cost him, as well as whether he can continue pursuing it.

Why are Thunderbolts* and The Rookie mentioned?

The headline’s Thunderbolts reference points to Wyatt Russell. Disney’s official materials for Thunderbolts* identify Russell as part of the returning Marvel cast and list his character as John Walker/U.S. Agent. In Broke, however, he plays a grounded, non-superhero character: a damaged rodeo rider trying to stay alive in extreme weather.

Dennis Quaid is the second familiar name. He plays George Brandywine, True’s father. Quaid’s connection to The Rookie is his starring role in the 2002 film about baseball player Jim Morris. It is not a reference to the later television police drama, and Broke is neither a sequel nor a shared-universe story.

The supporting cast includes Auden Thornton, Mary McDonnell and Tom Skerritt. The movie was produced by, among others, Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley, Victoria Vaughn and Russell.

Is Broke a western or a survival thriller?

It is best classified as a contemporary western drama with survival-thriller elements. The western identity comes from the film’s setting, rodeo culture and focus on a working rider rather than from a traditional historical frontier setting. The survival-thriller element comes from the blizzard, exposure, injury and the pressure of making life-or-death decisions while isolated.

That distinction matters if you are expecting a fast-moving action movie. The central danger is immediate, but the story is also concerned with True’s damaged body, his family, his choices and the possibility that his career is leading him toward death. The result is closer to a character-led survival drama than to a conventional action thriller.

How did Broke perform with critics?

At the latest Rotten Tomatoes snapshot available for this coverage, Broke had a 91% Tomatometer score from 11 critic reviews and a 76% audience score from more than 100 ratings. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes and categorizes it as a western drama.

  • Verbatim has been a leader in data storage technology since 1969, and guarantees this product with a limited lifetime warranty and technical support

The 91% score explains why the film is being described as critically acclaimed, but the sample is still small. Eleven reviews do not represent the same breadth of consensus as a major theatrical release with hundreds of critics weighing in. The audience score also reflects a larger but comparatively modest number of ratings. Those figures indicate a strong early critical response, not universal agreement or evidence that Broke was a broad theatrical hit.

Where can you watch Broke?

In the United States, Netflix’s official listing identifies Broke as a 2025, R-rated drama starring Wyatt Russell, Dennis Quaid and Auden Thornton. A U.S. availability check retrieved for this coverage also listed the film on Netflix, with paid rental or purchase options through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango At Home. Check the service directly before subscribing or paying, because catalogs and digital storefront offers vary by country and can change without notice.

The film’s move to Netflix was reported for August 21, 2025, after its digital debut. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released Broke on digital platforms on May 6, 2025, and Sony’s movie page subsequently listed it as available on digital and DVD. Sony’s availability pathways have included Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango, Verizon Fios, DIRECTV, Sony Pictures Core, Amazon and Walmart, though the exact purchase or rental status may differ by platform.

For viewers who prefer a physical copy, the Broke DVD is also an option. Physical-media listings record a June 17, 2025 DVD release, while Sony confirms DVD availability. That makes the disc relevant for collectors or viewers who do not want to depend on a changing streaming catalog, but it is not the only way to watch the film.

What makes Broke worth seeking out?

The most immediate appeal is the contrast between Russell’s recent superhero visibility and the role he plays here. True Brandywine has no enhanced abilities or comic-book machinery to protect him. His survival depends on endurance, judgment and whatever physical and emotional reserves remain after years of dangerous work.

The movie also offers a less familiar angle on the western. Instead of treating the rodeo as background decoration, it connects True’s profession to his identity, family life and physical deterioration. The blizzard becomes both a literal survival crisis and a pressure test for the choices that brought him there.

For Dennis Quaid, the film provides another recognition point without repeating The Rookie. His presence helps explain the headline, but the story is its own contemporary western rather than a sports drama. Viewers drawn by the cast references may find a quieter, harsher film than those labels initially suggest.

The bottom line

Broke is the film described by the headline: a 2025 contemporary western survival drama directed by Carlyle Eubank and led by Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid. Russell’s link to Thunderbolts* and Quaid’s link to The Rookie are cast connections only. The movie follows a bareback bronc rider trapped in a spring blizzard, and its story combines physical survival with family tension, regret and the consequences of a hazardous career. Its strong 91% critic score comes from a small review sample, and current U.S. listings place it on Netflix as well as paid digital platforms and DVD.
