Oba Femi defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42, and Lesnar’s decision to leave his gloves and boots in the ring made the loss look like a farewell. But it was not a confirmed retirement: WWE’s story continued with Lesnar returning to face Femi again, then endorsing him as WWE’s future after Femi won their second match.
What happened at WrestleMania 42?
On April 19, 2026, Oba Femi beat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42. WWE’s recap says Lesnar hit an F-5, but Femi recovered and won with a Chokeslam followed by Fall From Grace. Afterward, Lesnar removed his gloves and boots, left them in the ring, and hugged Paul Heyman. WWE’s match recap presented Femi as “officially the next big thing.”
The gesture carried the familiar visual weight of a wrestler leaving the ring for the last time. It invited a retirement reading, but the scene itself did not establish that Lesnar had permanently retired.
Was Lesnar passing the torch to Femi?
As an on-screen moment, the loss worked as a symbolic handoff: Lesnar, a defining powerhouse, was beaten by Femi, whom WWE was positioning as a new dominant force. The gloves and boots made that symbolism especially clear. WWE had also built the match around Femi answering Lesnar’s open challenge; its March 17 preview noted that Lesnar had eliminated Femi from that year’s Royal Rumble. WWE’s preview described Femi as undefeated in singles competition since arriving in December, a storyline claim made at the time of that preview.

That makes “passing the torch” a fair description of the scene’s meaning, but not proof that Lesnar’s career ended. The distinction matters: WWE’s subsequent storyline brought Lesnar back and gave the two men another match.
What happened after WrestleMania?
Lesnar returned for a rematch
In May 2026, WWE reported that Lesnar returned on Raw and attacked Femi, setting up a WrestleMania rematch at Clash in Italy. The continuation made clear that the gloves-and-boots moment had not closed Lesnar’s in-ring story. WWE’s Clash in Italy preview records the return and the rematch setup.

Femi won again at SummerSlam
On August 1, 2026, Femi defeated Lesnar a second time, this time in a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam. WWE reported that Lesnar embraced Femi afterward and declared him “the future of WWE.” WWE’s SummerSlam recap gave the succession theme a more explicit endorsement, while also confirming that Lesnar had continued wrestling after WrestleMania.
What the two matches mean
| Moment | What it established |
|---|---|
| WrestleMania 42, April 19, 2026 | Femi beat Lesnar; Lesnar left his gloves and boots in the ring, creating an apparent farewell image. |
| After WrestleMania, May 2026 | Lesnar returned, attacked Femi, and set up a rematch, so the WrestleMania loss was not a confirmed retirement. |
| SummerSlam, August 1, 2026 | Femi beat Lesnar again; Lesnar embraced him and called him the future of WWE. |
The strongest reading is therefore a symbolic handoff that unfolded across two wins, not a definitive retirement at WrestleMania. Femi’s victory supplied the first striking image; the rematch and Lesnar’s later endorsement made the succession story more explicit.
