The styling centered on red, including a lead look described at the time as a Chiefs-red bikini. The issue debuted May 14, 2024; the shoot was a fashion feature, not evidence of an official Kansas City Chiefs swimwear collaboration.
When Brittany Mahomes appeared in SI Swimsuit
Sports Illustrated identified Mahomes as a rookie for its 2024 Swimsuit Issue in a preview published February 8, 2024. The issue debuted May 14, when SI published its photo gallery. SI’s gallery and The Kansas City Star’s coverage place the appearance in that year’s issue, described by the Star as the 60th edition.
Where the shoot took place
SI identifies San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye in northern Belize, as the photo-session location. Derek Kettela photographed Mahomes there. The February preview described the shoot as taking place in Belize, while the official gallery supplies the more specific location.
Why the red bikinis were described as Chiefs-red
SI said the San Pedro styling was “all about the hottest color of the season: red.” The Kansas City Star described the lead image as Mahomes in a Chiefs-red bikini on a white-sand Belize beach. SI’s later retrospective says she wore multiple red bikinis and one-pieces. “Chiefs-red” describes the visual resemblance to the Kansas City team color; the cited coverage does not establish that the swimsuits were licensed Chiefs merchandise or part of a team collaboration.

Wardrobe credits in the SI gallery
SI’s captions credit swimsuits from Mugler, Andi Bagus, Natalia Fedner, Nessy Swimwear, Heavy Manners, ALT Swim and Ola Vida. Some looks also include Casablanca shorts and Free People hats. Those credits identify labels featured in the shoot; they do not confirm current stock, prices or exact product matches for shoppers.
What Mahomes said about the opportunity
In the February 8 preview, Mahomes said, “I think I align perfectly with SI Swimsuit’s vision because I am unapologetically always myself in any setting.” In the debut announcement, she described the message she hoped readers would take away: “I want women to feel empowered to always be yourself, love yourself and feel confident in whatever you do, and I think SI Swimsuit does, too.” Both statements were published by Sports Illustrated in connection with her debut.

These remarks frame the appearance around self-expression and confidence, rather than simply the color or cut of the swimwear.

SI’s coverage described Mahomes as a former soccer player and co-owner of the Kansas City Current. In a separate remark about the club’s CPKC Stadium, she said: “These women deserve to feel important and have their own facility so that they can perform at their best.” The quote concerns the women’s soccer venue, not the swimsuit shoot itself.
