Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre disclosed that he had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease on September 24, 2024. He made the announcement in opening remarks to the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means, where he was testifying about welfare reform—not in a medical briefing. Whether his disease is connected to football or head injuries is unknown.
What did Brett Favre say about his diagnosis?
Favre’s announcement came during his opening statement at a congressional hearing on Mississippi’s use of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds. He said: “As I’m sure you’ll understand, while it’s too late for me — I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s — this is also a cause dear to my heart.” The Associated Press reproduced his remarks in its September 24, 2024 report.
His disclosure established that Favre said he had received a diagnosis; the hearing itself concerned welfare policy. The comment connected his diagnosis to a cause he described as important to him, rather than providing a medical account of his condition.
What has been reported about when he was diagnosed?
In later reporting, the Associated Press said Favre told TMZ Sports that he was diagnosed in January, after having trouble using his right arm and being unable to hold a screwdriver steady. Those details are Favre’s account as reported by AP; they are not independently verified medical records. The AP report does not establish his symptoms or medical status after that disclosure.

Is Favre’s Parkinson’s linked to football or concussions?
No established connection has been reported. AP noted that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown and that it is unclear whether Favre’s condition is related to his football career or head injuries. Favre has publicly estimated that he experienced many concussions during his NFL career, but that estimate does not show what caused his disease in his individual case.

In its September 24, 2024 report, AP quoted Parkinson’s Foundation CEO John Lehr estimating that 90,000 people in the United States would be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2024. That is an estimate for 2024, not a current-year count.
