Brendan Fraser has said years of performing his own stunts left him injured, and reporting in 2022 and 2023 described a seven-year period of hospital visits and multiple operations. He has also spoken about depression during a difficult stretch marked by several personal challenges. Those accounts are historical: they do not establish his current health or provide a complete medical record.
What health problems did Brendan Fraser have?
In a December 2022 interview report, The Guardian said injuries associated with the third Mummy film were followed by seven years of hospital visits and operations. A January 2023 TheWrap account of Fraser’s interview with The Telegraph described injuries from years of stunt work and a series of procedures during that period.

Fraser put it this way, as quoted by TheWrap: “I got a little banged up from years of doing my own stunts.” The outlet also reported that he used muscle tape and ice packs to get through filming. These accounts connect his physical difficulties with a demanding stunt career, but they do not establish that a particular stunt caused each injury or operation.
What surgeries were reported?
The Guardian listed operations on Fraser’s back, a partial knee replacement, and vocal-cord surgery. TheWrap specified vocal-cord repairs, a partial knee replacement, and a lumbar laminectomy among the procedures over the seven-year period. Fraser described needing “a surgical fix on the spine and the hinges,” according to TheWrap.

Fraser also told TheWrap: “That took a lot out of me. I knew I would get better, but it took a long time.” The reporting describes his recollections and publicly reported procedures; it is not a medical record.
Did doing his own stunts cause his injuries?
Fraser and the cited coverage associate his injuries and surgeries with years of stunt work, including work on the third Mummy film. The available reporting does not independently identify the cause of every procedure, so it would be too strong to say that one film or a specific stunt caused all of his health problems.

What has Fraser said about depression?
In a 2018 TIME report, Fraser alleged that Philip Berk, a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), groped him at an association luncheon in 2003. TIME reported that Berk denied Fraser’s account and characterized the contact as a pinch “in jest.” Berk also said an apology letter he sent admitted no wrongdoing. The allegation is disputed, not an adjudicated finding.
Fraser said the incident affected him emotionally and contributed to depression. Describing his immediate reaction in remarks to GQ quoted by TIME, he said: “I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.” TIME also reported Fraser’s account that he did not want to confront how the incident made him feel or have it become part of his story.

Was Fraser’s career break caused by his health?
Health problems were one part of a wider period of personal difficulty, not the only cause established by the reporting. The Associated Press’s March 2023 account of Fraser’s career and Best Actor win for The Whale described his years away from the big screen as involving health problems, divorce, his mother’s death, and an alleged assault. That supports a multi-factor account of his hiatus rather than a claim that injury alone ended his career.
