The British Royal Family’s gifts fall into distinct categories: private presents exchanged within the family, official gifts connected to royal duties, and unsolicited offerings from the public. The Royal Household’s 2026 policy sets different rules for accepting and keeping them; Christmas presents, meanwhile, are described as a family custom rather than part of that official-gift system.
How the Royal Household classifies gifts
The Royal Household Gift Policy 2026 defines a gift broadly as an object given to the Sovereign or another member of the Royal Family. Its treatment depends on who gives it and the circumstances—not simply on the object’s value.
| Category | Typical donor or context | How it is handled |
|---|---|---|
| Official | Heads of state; official visits and engagements; patronages; or organisations with an established relationship with the Royal Family. | Official gifts from heads of state or presented during official engagements, except perishables, are accessioned to the Royal Collection or otherwise held in trust for the Nation. Other official gifts may be reviewed and retained as appropriate. |
| Unofficial | Members of the public without an established relationship, including people offering gifts during walkabouts. | Considered on a limited, case-by-case basis. An unsolicited item sent without prior acceptance may be respectfully disposed of. |
| Personal | Gifts given in a private capacity, such as from family members or personal friends. | Decisions about personal gifts are private. |
The policy’s categories describe different circumstances, not a single rule that applies to every gift or every recipient. Royal Collection Trust reviews official items accessioned to the Collection or held in trust for the Nation. The policy also says monetary gifts cannot be accepted and returned, including money intended to be passed on to charity. Read the Royal Household Gift Policy 2026.
What should someone do if they want to give a royal a gift?
The Household prefers that offers be sent in advance, so security protocols for the Royal Family and royal residences can be followed and due diligence completed. That preference applies even to gifts intended for official engagements. As the policy puts it: “It is the preference of The Royal Household that Offers of Gifts are sent in advance, in order for the security protocols surrounding The Royal Family and Royal Residences to be adhered to and due diligence completed.”

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Offers from unofficial donors are assessed individually. Rather than send a physical present, the Household generally suggests donating to a royal patronage or supporting a beneficial local initiative. It does not recommend a particular cause; the donor chooses.
What happens to gifts from the public?
A gift offered by a member of the public is not automatically accepted or kept. The distinction between an offer made in advance and an unsolicited item matters: unofficial offers are considered case by case, while an unsolicited item sent without prior acceptance may be disposed of. The policy’s advance-offer preference gives the Household a chance to complete security and due-diligence checks before an item is presented or sent.

When does the Royal Family exchange Christmas presents?
The Royal Family’s Christmas page says that presents are laid out on trestle tables on Christmas Eve and exchanged at teatime. Royal Collection Trust traces the custom to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who exchanged gifts on 24 December in keeping with German tradition; the Trust says the Royal Family continues the Christmas Eve exchange. The Royal Family at Christmas and Royal Collection Trust’s account of a Victorian Christmas at Windsor Castle describe the tradition.

This private family exchange is separate from official gifts presented during state visits, engagements or institutional relationships. The Christmas page also includes Queen-era descriptions of presents and Christmas puddings given to Household staff. Those are historical descriptions on the page, not confirmation of present-day practice under the current monarch.
Why official and diplomatic gifts matter
Official gifts can mark a relationship, visit or event as well as express gratitude. Royal Collection Trust describes the Royal Family giving and receiving gifts at state visits in the UK and abroad and on Commonwealth tours. UK engagements may include a commemorative gift connected to a visit to a school or hospital, or to the annual Maundy Service. In international exchanges, gifts often represent traditional skills or carry cultural significance.

That symbolic role helps explain why an official gift is not simply a private present with a formal label: its connection to public duties affects its handling and, in some cases, its place in the Royal Collection or its status as held in trust for the Nation. Royal Collection Trust’s Royal Gifts account describes examples of these exchanges.

The Royal Family publishes records of official gifts received. Its page for 2023 links to downloadable lists for several members, including the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales, and Princess Royal. The Household says official gifts come from heads of state, patronages and related organisations, as well as from official engagements, and are logged. The 2023 official-gifts page is a record of that category, not a full inventory of private family exchanges or personal presents.
