Ranked from weakest to strongest overall, the seven films below are judged by their execution, Pitt’s performance and role, how central war is to the story, and critical context—not by a claim that one ranking is objectively correct.
The scope is broad: some entries are combat films, while others use war as a backdrop or historical turning point. Legends of the Fall is the clearest borderline case; it is included because World War I materially affects its family story, not because it is a conventional battlefield movie.
Brad Pitt’s war movies, ranked
7. Legends of the Fall (1994)
This is the least direct fit for a war-movie list. The film is primarily a sweeping family drama and romance about the Ludlow family, with World War I shaping the characters’ lives rather than defining the film as a battlefield story. Sony classifies it as a romance and drama, and notes its Academy Award for cinematography. Pitt is central to the family saga, but the war material is only one part of its much larger story.
Its inclusion makes sense only under a broad definition of “war movie.” If you mean films centered on military operations, this belongs outside the list.

6. Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
Pitt plays Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, whose wartime imprisonment leads to an unexpected friendship with the Dalai Lama. Sony describes Harrer as an Austrian prisoner of war transformed by that relationship. The film’s interest lies more in personal change and cultural encounter than in combat, making it an adventure and biographical drama as much as a war story.
That distinction gives it a memorable human focus, but it also means the war itself is less consistently present than in the films ranked above it.
5. Troy (2004)
Pitt’s Achilles leads this epic retelling of the Trojan War. It earns a place when “war movie” includes ancient and mythic warfare, though it is a very different kind of film from modern military dramas: its battles belong to an epic shaped by legend, heroic rivalries, and personal ambition.

- It is double sided
- This poster is a great collectors item
Achilles is the film’s defining presence, and Pitt’s role is among the most prominent on this list. But Troy’s scale and mythic framing matter more than the grounded depiction of military life that drives the strongest entries.

Allied is a World War II romantic thriller, not a front-line combat drama. Pitt plays Max Vatan, an intelligence officer whose relationship with his wife is destabilized by suspicion that she may be working with the enemy. Paramount’s synopsis establishes that tension as the story’s central engine.
The wartime setting gives the romance its stakes, while espionage and uncertainty carry the plot. It is a strong fit for a list of war-related films, but less so for a list limited to battlefield stories.

3. War Machine (2017)
In this satire about NATO forces in Afghanistan, Pitt plays a charismatic four-star general. Netflix describes the film as inspired by Michael Hastings’s nonfiction book The Operators. That inspiration does not make the movie a documentary: it is a satirical, fictionalized take on military leadership and the machinery of war.
The film’s distinct tone and contemporary setting set it apart from the historical dramas here. Its war subject is central, but it approaches that subject through satire rather than combat realism.
2. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Pitt is Lt. Aldo Raine, leading an American squad on a mission against Nazi leaders in Quentin Tarantino’s stylized alternate-history World War II film. Universal’s description highlights that mission, but the movie is also a revenge story and dark comedy, with a tone far removed from a conventional military drama.
Rank #4
The result is one of Pitt’s most distinctive war-related roles. Its deliberate invention and genre play are part of its appeal, though they make it a poor choice for viewers seeking a realistic account of the war.
1. Fury (2014)
Fury takes the top spot for combining Pitt’s commanding lead performance with a story built directly around wartime combat. He plays Wardaddy, commander of a Sherman tank and its five-person crew during the Allies’ late-war push through Europe in April 1945, according to Sony’s synopsis.
The film’s close focus on the crew gives its violence and exhaustion a claustrophobic force. It is not a documentary account of combat: Time reviewer Richard Corliss wrote that “World War II was a historical event, but also a movie genre, and Fury occasionally prints the legend.” That caveat is useful alongside the film’s intensity. Its rank here reflects the way its performance, setting, and central conflict work together—not a claim to perfect historical realism.

How to read the ranking
The list spans different meanings of “war movie,” so the order is not a like-for-like contest between seven battlefield dramas. The titles differ in how directly they depict conflict, how much they fictionalize history, and whether Pitt’s character is a soldier, intelligence officer, or participant in a story transformed by war.
- Most directly about military conflict: Fury and War Machine center on military operations and leadership, though one is a combat drama and the other a satire.
- World War II stories beyond the front line: Allied emphasizes espionage and marriage; Inglourious Basterds reshapes the war as alternate-history revenge.
- Historical or mythic warfare: Troy dramatizes ancient conflict through epic legend.
- War as a force in a broader personal story: Seven Years in Tibet and Legends of the Fall are the least conventional fits.
Which Brad Pitt movies are set during World War II?
Inglourious Basterds, Fury, and Allied are the three World War II films on this list. They approach the conflict differently: alternate-history commando revenge, late-war tank combat, and an espionage-centered romantic thriller, respectively.
