It accepts HDMI or SDI, can stream at up to 4K60, and includes a touchscreen and microSD recording support. It may suit a church or event team that already has a camera or production switcher and is comfortable using BoxCast’s streaming platform. Before buying, confirm the current hardware price, availability, and paid subscription requirements with BoxCast: the product page’s displayed details may change or conflict.
What BoxCast Spark does
Spark takes one video feed from a camera or production switcher and sends it to BoxCast for streaming. In a multi-camera setup, the switcher selects and mixes the cameras; Spark connects downstream to the switcher’s finished program output. BoxCast’s support guide describes one video input and no camera-switching function (Getting Started with Spark; Spark Compatible Video Resolutions + Frame Rates).
BoxCast lists HEVC (H.265) encoding, streaming up to 4K60, a 4.3-inch touchscreen with live preview, an RGB status ring, audio-level controls, an onscreen network speed test, scheduling and multistreaming automation, BoxCast Flow transport, and microSD backup recording. These are manufacturer-published features, not independent test results (Spark HEVC Touchscreen Encoder). The 2024 launch announcement provides historical context for the product, but is not evidence of independent performance testing (BoxCast’s Spark: An Affordable, Feature-Rich HEVC Encoder for Churches).
Choose HDMI or SDI for your existing signal chain
Choose the version that matches the output you can reliably provide from the camera or switcher, and the cabling already installed. Spark does not make an HDMI camera system into a multi-camera production workflow or replace a switcher.

| Version | Input listed by BoxCast | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI 2.0a | A camera or switcher with an HDMI program output. |
| SDI | SD/HD/3G/6G/12G-SDI | A camera or switcher with an SDI output and an SDI cabling workflow. |
Both versions accept audio embedded in the video signal. If the audio is separate, Spark also lists balanced stereo analog input on two ¼-inch TRS jacks and unbalanced stereo input on 3.5mm (Spark HEVC Touchscreen Encoder; Spark Technical Specifications).
Setup: connect Spark and run a test broadcast
- Prepare the unit. BoxCast says the package includes a 12V power adapter, clip-on stand, and clip-on wall mount; the unit is also tripod- and VESA-compatible. Power-on can take 20–30 seconds. Complete the onscreen onboarding the first time you use it (Getting Started with Spark).
- Connect the network. Use Ethernet or Wi-Fi. BoxCast recommends Ethernet for stability, while Wi-Fi is supported. If available, use a wired connection for the production setup and reserve Wi-Fi for situations where cabling is impractical.
- Connect the program video. Feed the HDMI or SDI input on the Spark version you own. For a multi-camera production, connect the final program output from the switcher rather than expecting Spark to select cameras.
- Connect audio if it is not embedded. Use the appropriate analog input and cable for the actual mixer output. Spark accepts a 48kHz audio signal; check the source’s output format before troubleshooting missing or incompatible audio.
- Run a dashboard test. Log in to BoxCast Dashboard, open Schedule, choose Quick Test, select Spark as the source, and start the test broadcast. BoxCast says configuration may take about 30–45 seconds. The test is visible only inside the dashboard, not as a public broadcast.
For the test, send the real camera or program feed where possible. BoxCast cautions that a black screen, color bars, or slideshow can make diagnostics appear worse than they are.

Video, audio, and local recording details
Resolution and frame rate
BoxCast lists supported input formats up to 2160p (3840×2160) at 60 fps and advertises streaming up to 4K60. Its guide says Spark automatically chooses a streaming resolution based on the input and available bandwidth. An input’s maximum supported format does not guarantee that every network path can sustain a 4K stream. BoxCast also documents that 4K60 streaming and local recording cannot run simultaneously (Spark Compatible Video Resolutions + Frame Rates).
Audio from a mixer
BoxCast says Spark only accepts a 48kHz signal (Connecting Audio Sources to Spark Encoder, March 6, 2025). For a mixer with separate left and right XLR outputs feeding Spark’s balanced analog inputs, BoxCast recommends two balanced XLR-female-to-¼-inch-TRS-male cables. It advises against converting XLR directly to 3.5mm. Match the cable and signal level to the mixer’s actual outputs; the connector shape alone does not establish that levels are compatible.

microSD backup recording
BoxCast specifies a Class I microSD card with at least 16GB capacity, formatted as ext4 or exFAT, for local recording. The published specifications do not establish a particular card model, so check the stated requirements rather than relying on an unverified recommendation (Spark Technical Specifications). Plan around the 4K60 restriction: Spark cannot stream and record locally at that setting at the same time.
Price, subscription, and platform dependency
BoxCast’s product-page content retrieved on October 3, 2026 listed the HDMI version at $999 and the SDI version at $1,299, described the hardware as a one-time purchase, and said Spark requires a paid BoxCast subscription plan. The same page contained availability language that may be stale or inconsistent. Treat these as time-sensitive manufacturer-listed details, not guaranteed current checkout terms; confirm the variant, stock, subscription options, and total recurring cost directly with BoxCast before purchasing (Spark HEVC Touchscreen Encoder).

The relevant comparison is not hardware price alone: Spark depends on a paid BoxCast plan, so include that service in the cost of operating the encoder. The sources cited here do not establish a current plan price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider Spark—and who should look elsewhere
- Consider it if your team wants a dedicated encoder that accepts the HDMI or SDI output your production system already provides and sends one finished feed to BoxCast.
- Consider the SDI version when SDI is the available program output in your installed workflow; choose HDMI when HDMI is the output you can provide. The connector standard and installed cabling are more useful selection criteria than a blanket claim that one is better.
- Do not treat it as a switcher. Teams that need to select among multiple cameras still need a camera switcher or another production system before the encoder.
- Check the operating trade-off if local backup recording is important: recording is supported, but not simultaneously with 4K60 streaming.
- Budget for the platform as well as the hardware, because BoxCast says a paid subscription is required.
Common setup problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No usable video feed | Input connector, camera/switcher output, or an unsupported format. | Confirm that the cable is connected to the matching HDMI or SDI input and that the source is producing a supported resolution and frame rate. Test with the actual program feed, not only a black screen or color bars. |
| Unstable network or poor test diagnostics | Wi-Fi conditions or a test source that does not represent the real program. | Use Ethernet where practical, as BoxCast recommends for stability. Send the intended camera or program feed when evaluating diagnostics. |
| No sound or distorted analog audio | Audio may be separate, the source may not be 48kHz, or cable and signal level may not match. | Check whether audio is embedded; otherwise verify 48kHz and use the correct analog input and mixer-compatible cable. For separate XLR left/right outputs, follow BoxCast’s two balanced XLR-female-to-¼-inch-TRS-male cable guidance. |
| Local recording will not operate alongside a 4K60 stream | This combination is not supported. | Do not plan on simultaneous 4K60 streaming and recording. Check BoxCast’s supported operating formats for a different intended configuration. |
| Quick Test appears not to start immediately | The encoder may still be configuring. | Allow the approximately 30–45 seconds BoxCast says configuration may take, and remember that Quick Test is visible only inside the dashboard. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Spark is for sending a live program feed into BoxCast. If instead you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service made for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K60 at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
