Yang’s goodbye message focused on gratitude, but the reporting does not establish one exclusive reason for his eventual departure. Earlier, when considering whether to return for season 51, he said he had spoken with Michaels and worried, “I feel the audience is maybe getting sick of me.” Michaels encouraged him to stay, telling him, “That’s not true. There’s more for you to do. I need you.” Yang returned that season; those earlier comments explain that decision, not necessarily why he later left. ABC News and AP covered the exchange.
