Borderlands (2024) has the recognizable names, characters and dangerous-planet setup of its video-game source, but that is not enough to make a distinctive film. The adaptation’s central problem is that it pares back the games’ unruly comic world-building without replacing it with a coherent cinematic identity. Is the Borderlands movie any good? As an adaptation, it is a frustrating example of how familiar ingredients can survive while the texture that made them memorable gets lost.
What is the Borderlands movie about?
Directed and co-written by Eli Roth, Borderlands is a 2024 live-action adaptation of the game series. Its story follows bounty hunter Lilith as she searches for a young heiress on the dangerous planet Pandora, according to the BBFC’s film record. The premise offers a straightforward route into the setting: a hardened outsider, a missing girl and a hostile world.
The ensemble is led by Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. That is a conspicuous collection of performers and recognizable roles, but the presence of familiar characters does not itself make the group feel like a functioning team or reproduce the experience of playing the games.
Is Borderlands faithful to the games?
It is recognizable in its broad materials, but faithfulness is more than names, weapons and a sci-fi action setup. The games’ identity comes from the combination of eccentric characters, crude humor, cartoonish presentation, planetary settings and loot-driven play. TIME’s August 9, 2024 analysis describes those qualities and argues that the movie sacrifices the series’ goofy world-building. That is a critic’s interpretation, not a claim about every player’s response, but it points to the adaptation’s most revealing trade-off.

World-building and visual identity
Pandora is supposed to feel like a place with its own deranged logic, not just a backdrop for action. The film retains the dangerous-planet premise, yet the key adaptation challenge is to make its visual oddities and rough-edged society feel like parts of one world. When the setting becomes generic scenery between plot beats, the source’s cartoonish identity is reduced to surface resemblance.
Humor and character voice
The games’ comedy is not an optional garnish: its bluntness and strangeness shape how the world and its people come across. A movie can change the timing and form of jokes, but it still needs a consistent comic sensibility. Here, the adaptation’s broad approach does not sufficiently recreate the peculiar tone that gives the franchise its character.

Why doesn’t the Borderlands movie work as a movie?
The trouble is not simply that it changes things. A successful adaptation can alter plot, pacing or characterization while preserving the source’s appeal in another medium. The more important question is whether the resulting film has a clear identity of its own. The critical response suggests that Borderlands lands between possibilities: Metacritic’s page collects August 2024 reviews that characterize it as caught between a strong identity and a compromised adaptation, and as trying to appeal broadly without leaving much of an impression.
That helps explain why an impressive cast can still feel like a list of attractions rather than a coherent ensemble. Each performer and character needs to contribute to the same tonal and narrative engine. If the script moves between action, irreverence and exposition without making those elements reinforce one another, star power cannot supply the missing connective tissue.

Does Borderlands make sense to viewers who haven’t played the games?
The bounty-hunt premise is easy to grasp without franchise knowledge, and the cast gives viewers familiar entry points. But accessibility is not the same as coherence. Newcomers need the film to establish why this world is strange, what its characters want and why their relationships matter—not just recognize a parade of names and references.
The adaptation’s broad plotting may be legible on its own, but its appeal is weakened when it neither builds a compelling world for newcomers nor fully carries over the games’ comic texture for fans. The result is an awkward middle ground: familiarity is present, while the particularity that could make the story feel fresh is less so.

What did critics think of Borderlands?
The reviewed critical sources were strongly negative. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the film “squanders its star power and the chance to build on the space Western video game, ultimately delivering little more than a ‘meh.’” That is the aggregator’s consensus statement, not a quotation from an individual critic. Metacritic’s August 2024 reviews likewise include assessments that the film tries to appeal widely without making much of an impression. Neither conclusion needs a current score to make the pattern clear, and aggregator ratings and review counts can change.
Is Borderlands worth watching?
If you want to see the cast inhabit familiar game characters or are curious about the adaptation, the movie offers that basic premise. If you are looking for a film that makes Pandora’s comic, loot-filled chaos feel distinctive, or that turns the ensemble into a compelling whole, the critical case against it is persuasive. Its failure is not that it lacks recognizable Borderlands material; it is that recognition does not become a strong enough movie identity.
