Yael van der Wouden’s The Safekeep turns a summer of household irritations into a tense, intimate story about desire, possession and the history a home can conceal. Its slow accumulation of unease is the novel’s chief strength: the missing crockery matters because Isabel’s rules are not merely fussy habits, but a way of controlling what she can bear to know. The late shift in perspective gives that domestic suspense a larger historical charge, though readers who want a consistently brisk pace may find the opening deliberately patient.
What is The Safekeep about?
Set in rural Overijssel in the Netherlands in 1961, The Safekeep follows Isabel, who lives alone in her late mother’s country house and arranges her days around order and routine. Her brother Louis leaves his new girlfriend, Eva, there as a guest for the season. Eva does not follow Isabel’s rules, and when a spoon, a knife and a bowl go missing, Isabel’s irritation hardens into suspicion.
The premise is intentionally domestic and bounded: a house, its objects, and two women who read the same rooms differently. Yet the conflict is never just a mystery about who moved the silverware. Isabel treats the home and its contents as things to guard; Eva’s presence unsettles the boundaries Isabel has drawn around both. As suspicion shifts toward attraction, the house becomes the novel’s central pressure point—an apparent refuge that also holds a past its occupants do not fully understand.
That design makes the title resonate on more than one level. To “safekeep” can mean protecting objects, preserving a private order, or keeping something out of sight. Van der Wouden allows those meanings to overlap without explaining them too soon, so the reader’s understanding of what is being protected changes as the story develops.

How desire, suspicion and obsession build
The novel’s emotional movement depends on Isabel’s habits becoming visible as both discipline and defense. She notices what Eva touches, what she leaves out of place and what disappears. That close attention generates suspense, but it also reveals how much of Isabel’s sense of safety rests on controlling the space around her. The household details are not decorative period atmosphere; they are the means by which the novel makes possession feel intimate and unstable.
Van der Wouden has said that she wanted to explore “desire as the flipside of repulsion.” The premise gives that idea a concrete form: the person Isabel distrusts is also the person who draws her out of the life she has made. The attraction is most persuasive when it grows from the same alertness that fuels Isabel’s suspicion. She is not simply exchanging dislike for affection; she is forced to reconsider what her scrutiny has been telling her about Eva—and about herself.
The Booker Prize’s 2024 judges called the book “a compelling and atmospheric story of obsession and secrets” and a “quietly devastating queer love story.” Those descriptions capture the novel’s tonal balance, though the achievement is more specific than atmosphere alone: its tension comes from making ordinary acts of handling, arranging and withholding carry emotional weight.

Does the slow build work?
The opening takes time to establish Isabel’s routines and her resistance to Eva. That patience serves the story’s later escalation: if every object and rule did not matter so much to Isabel, the small disruptions would not feel like incursions. The method also lets the heat of the summer and the changing dynamic between the women gather force gradually rather than arrive as a sudden melodramatic turn.

The trade-off is real. The same repetition that builds Isabel’s enclosed world can make the early movement feel measured, and the novel’s tension does not rise at a uniform pace. For readers who enjoy psychological suspense built from accumulated detail, the restraint makes the eventual reorientation more potent. Those looking for a fast-moving historical thriller may find the domestic scenes slow before the book’s wider stakes come into focus.
A later shift in perspective, including material from Eva’s diary, brings her more fully into view and changes how the reader interprets the relationship. The reveal is effective because it alters the meaning of earlier tensions rather than simply supplying a surprise. It also asks the reader to revisit the assumptions built alongside Isabel’s: whose account of a home has been accepted, and what has been left outside it? The novel’s structure rewards attention, even if its controlled pace will not suit every reader.

How the house connects queer desire to concealed history
As the story opens beyond Isabel and Eva’s immediate conflict, the house becomes entangled with postwar history and the Holocaust. The distinction between what the characters know and what the reader gradually comes to understand matters: the book does not begin with a complete account of the past, but lets its absences press against the present. This makes the revelation more than a twist in a private romance. It unsettles the idea that a home’s contents and inherited claims are neutral simply because they have become familiar.
Van der Wouden has connected the novel’s origins to her interest in how Dutch people narrate national history, as well as to homes, ownership and the fantasy of having a home of one’s own. Those concerns are legible in the novel’s attention to inheritance and possession. Isabel’s careful stewardship of her mother’s objects can look like simple devotion until the story makes the limits of that interpretation clear. What is kept, who has the right to keep it, and what a family or nation chooses not to name become related questions.
The queer relationship is central to that design, not a separate contemporary theme laid over a historical plot. Isabel’s attraction to Eva complicates her defensive idea of herself, while her brother Hendrik’s life with his male partner, Sebastian, provides another form of queer intimacy within the family’s orbit. The novel uses these relationships to shape Isabel’s understanding of desire; it does not claim to speak for every queer life or historical experience.

The historical turn gives the book moral force, but it also concentrates a great deal of meaning in the revelation. Readers may differ on whether the shift feels entirely earned or whether it risks making the intimate story carry more explanatory weight than it can hold. For this review, its strongest effect is not the shock of new information itself, but the way it makes familiar domestic details newly difficult to regard as innocent.

The Safekeep was shortlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize; it was the shortlist’s only debut novel, and van der Wouden was the first Dutch author shortlisted for the prize, according to the Booker Prize shortlist announcement. It did not win the Booker. In 2025, van der Wouden won the Women’s Prize for Fiction, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Booker judges praised the novel’s “remarkable inhabitation of obsession” and its “emotional landscape of loss and return.” That recognition fits a book whose most distinctive work happens at close range: in the rules of a household, the meanings attached to inherited objects, and the unsettled border between repulsion and longing.

Who should read The Safekeep?
This is a good choice for readers who value atmospheric historical fiction, psychologically detailed relationships and suspense that develops through observation rather than action. Its subject is not only what happened in one house, but how people live with stories they cannot—or will not—tell themselves. Readers who prefer rapid plotting should know that the tension takes time to accumulate; readers willing to follow that slow pressure will find a novel whose domestic scale opens into an unsettling account of desire and historical memory.
