Bodkin Season 1 is a seven-episode Netflix darkly comic mystery thriller about a fictional true-crime podcast investigating three disappearances from a Samhain celebration 25 years earlier. The series follows American podcaster Gilbert Power, Dublin journalist Dove Maloney, and researcher Emmy Sizergh as they investigate a small coastal Irish community—and gradually discover that the stories people tell about the past are inseparable from the stories they tell about themselves.

It premiered globally on Netflix on May 9, 2024. Netflix lists the season as TV-MA, with episodes running between 44 and 56 minutes.

What is Bodkin about?

Bodkin uses the structure of a true-crime investigation without being a documentary or an adaptation of a real case. Its central mystery concerns three people who disappeared during Bodkin’s annual Samhain celebration approximately 25 years before the events of the series.

The investigation is led by three very different outsiders. Gilbert Power is an enthusiastic American podcaster with Irish family roots who hopes the case will give him another major story. Dove Maloney is a skeptical investigative journalist from Dublin, now living in London, whose professional instincts make her suspicious of easy answers and polished narratives. Emmy Sizergh is an eager English researcher helping organize the podcast while trying to become more confident and find a voice of her own.

As the trio interviews residents and follows new clues, their project becomes more complicated than a search for a culprit. The town has reasons to bury its past, witnesses remember events differently, and the demands of making compelling audio begin to compete with the demands of responsible reporting.

Important distinction: Bodkin is fictional. The town is not a real place, the disappearances are not a documented Irish case, and the series is not based on an actual investigation. “True crime” describes the format and storytelling influence, not the factual status of the story.

Why is the series called Bodkin?

Bodkin is the name of the fictional Irish town where the investigation takes place. It should not be confused with a real Irish town or treated as a travel destination connected to an actual disappearance case.

The story’s cultural anchor is Samhain, a traditional Gaelic autumn festival associated with the end of the harvest and the arrival of longer, darker days. In the series, the festival gives the mystery its setting and atmosphere. It is not presented as a historical account of a specific real-life celebration involving these characters.

Cast and characters

Character Actor Role in the investigation
Gilbert Power Will Forte An optimistic American podcaster with Irish roots, using warmth and personal connection to gather material for a new series.
Dove Maloney Siobhán Cullen A hard-nosed investigative journalist from Dublin whose skepticism challenges Gilbert’s approach.
Emmy Sizergh Robyn Cara An eager researcher who organizes the project while trying to overcome her insecurities and establish her own identity.
Seamus Gallagher David Wilmot A volatile, mysterious local figure whose charm can quickly turn threatening.
Seán O’Shea Chris Walley A feckless local involved in shady activity and often out of his depth.

The principal creative team includes creator, co-showrunner, and executive producer Jez Scharf; co-showrunner and executive producer Alex Metcalf; and lead director Nash Edgerton.

A fictional mystery about the ethics of true crime

The most interesting question in Bodkin is not simply what happened to the missing people. It is what happens when a painful event becomes entertainment.

The series was conceived partly as a response to the creators’ engagement with true-crime documentaries and podcasts. It belongs to what its creators describe as a “post-Serial” landscape: a world in which investigative audio can attract enormous attention, but in which the act of turning real-seeming suffering into a narrative raises uncomfortable ethical questions.

Gilbert is drawn to the emotional power of a good story and understands how an audience connects with a personable host. Dove is more alert to manipulation, institutional failures, and the possibility that an interview subject is being used. Emmy sees the practical work behind the finished program and gradually has to consider what it means to participate in shaping other people’s experiences into episodes.

That conflict gives the mystery a second layer. A compelling explanation is not necessarily a true one, and a neat narrative may leave out the people who do not fit it.

Fact, memory, and narrative

Bodkin repeatedly tests the difference between evidence and interpretation. The trio must weigh:

  • what witnesses claim happened;
  • what they may have forgotten or chosen not to disclose;
  • what the town wants outsiders to believe;
  • what the investigators need to verify; and
  • what a podcast audience is likely to find dramatic.

This makes the show a mystery about storytelling as much as a mystery about disappearance. Every interview can provide information while also presenting a version of reality shaped by fear, guilt, self-protection, or performance.

Journalism versus podcasting

Dove and Gilbert are not just personality opposites. They represent different professional instincts.

Gilbert approaches people with enthusiasm and openness. His warmth helps him build rapport, but his desire for a successful follow-up story can make the investigation feel like a personal and commercial project. Dove brings the discipline of investigative journalism: she questions authority, notices hypocrisy, and resists accepting a source’s preferred version of events. Her methods are sharper, but her own career crisis complicates the idea that skepticism alone guarantees ethical reporting.

Emmy occupies the space between them. She handles research and organization, observes how the two senior figures work, and wants to move from being useful behind the scenes to becoming someone with an independent perspective. The trio’s disagreements therefore drive both the investigation and the character drama.

The season’s tone: darkly comic mystery thriller

The best description of Bodkin is darkly comic mystery thriller or offbeat true-crime mystery. It is not a straightforward comedy, even though it has absurd situations, awkward social encounters, and sharply funny character moments.

The show shifts between humor, sadness, menace, organized-crime elements, and personal crisis. That tonal movement is deliberate: the comedy exposes the investigators’ vanity and the town’s eccentricities, while the darker material keeps reminding the audience that the mystery concerns real harm within the fictional world.

The series also draws energy from its outsider perspective. An American with Irish ancestry, a Dublin journalist, and an English researcher arrive with different assumptions about Ireland and about the community they are investigating. Their perspectives allow the show to engage with Irish culture without presenting Bodkin as an untouched or easily legible place.

Episode guide

The following guide is spoiler-light and follows Netflix’s official episode descriptions. All seven episodes are part of Season 1.

  1. “One True Mystery” — 47 minutes: Dove reluctantly joins Gilbert on a strange case in a small Irish town where locals would prefer to leave the past buried.
  2. “Who We Are” — 44 minutes: Gilbert and Dove clash over interview methods while their personal problems begin to complicate the investigation.
  3. “Perfectly Innocent Life” — 53 minutes: After the death of a beloved local, the group searches for more clues. New information about the Samhain disappearances pushes Dove into morally murkier territory.
  4. “Poison or Something” — 56 minutes: An unusual development threatens the podcast. Gilbert tries to settle a debt, while Dove gives Emmy difficult advice.
  5. “Peace in Our Time” — 47 minutes: Gilbert learns more about Bodkin’s shady dealings, Dove provokes trouble at the pub, and new evidence helps the group assemble a shocking narrative.
  6. “Ends Justify Means” — 44 minutes: Dove and Emmy return to Inish Mac Tire seeking answers but encounter troubling visions and revelations. Gilbert faces a difficult dilemma.
  7. “Empty Your Pockets” — 55 minutes: The Samhain festival reopens old wounds and hidden threats as the investigation reaches its conclusion and the trio considers what to do next.

Because the episode titles and official descriptions already point toward major developments, viewers who want to avoid plot details should begin with episode one rather than reading extended recaps.

Where to watch Bodkin Season 1

Bodkin Season 1 is available on Netflix. Netflix lists the title as a seven-episode, TV-MA series and indicates that downloadable viewing is available. Exact audio and subtitle options vary by country, so viewers should check the title’s playback menu in their own Netflix market rather than relying on a general language list.

The TV-MA rating reflects the show’s adult subject matter, violence, threats, strong language, and darker themes. Parents and viewers who prefer a content-specific decision should consult the rating information shown in their region.

Is there a Bodkin soundtrack?

There is a digital soundtrack album composed by Paul Leonard-Morgan. Research confirms streaming and download availability through Amazon and other digital music services. That evidence does not establish a physical CD or vinyl release, so it is safer to treat the soundtrack as a digital release unless a retailer or rights holder confirms a physical edition.

Podcasting equipment for viewers inspired by the show

Bodkin is not a product-placement guide, and no particular microphone or recorder should be described as equipment used by the cast. However, viewers inspired by Gilbert, Dove, and Emmy’s interview-and-investigation workflow may reasonably want to create their own podcast. A podcast microphone is the most direct starting point for recording clear spoken-word audio.

For interviews conducted outside a studio, a portable audio recorder can be more practical than relying on a computer. Closed-back headphones are also useful for monitoring recording levels and catching background noise while editing; they are an accessory for the workflow, not official Bodkin merchandise.

Readers looking for cultural context should treat an Irish folklore or Samhain book as background reading rather than as a guide to the fictional mystery. The show uses Samhain as part of its atmosphere and story world, but it is not a historical case study.

What Bodkin is—and is not

  • It is: a fictional Netflix mystery told through a true-crime-podcast format.
  • It is: a story about journalism, memory, self-invention, and the ethics of turning investigations into entertainment.
  • It is: a darkly funny thriller with Irish cultural and coastal-community settings.
  • It is not: a documentary about a real disappearance.
  • It is not: a dramatization of a verified Samhain case.
  • It is not: evidence that the fictional town of Bodkin is a real Irish destination.

Production background

Netflix produced the seven-episode series with Higher Ground and wiip, with production beginning in Ireland. Jez Scharf created the series and served as co-showrunner and executive producer. Alex Metcalf served as co-showrunner and executive producer, and Nash Edgerton was the lead director.

David Flynn and Paul Lee executive produced for wiip. Tonia Davis, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Nne Ebong executive produced for Higher Ground, alongside the series’ other credited creative leaders. The executive-producer credits should not be confused with starring or creator credits: Barack and Michelle Obama were involved through Higher Ground and did not create or star in the series.

Who might enjoy Season 1?

Bodkin is a good fit for viewers who like mysteries that question their own storytelling methods, ensemble shows built around clashing professional personalities, and thrillers that mix menace with awkward or absurd humor. It will be less suitable for viewers seeking a conventional police procedural, a purely comic series, or a factual true-crime documentary.

Its strongest appeal lies in the combination of an old disappearance, a modern podcast production, and three investigators whose personal needs keep interfering with their search for objective truth.

Its combination of tension and absurdity makes it more than a conventional missing-person thriller—and its central warning is that a compelling story is not automatically the same thing as the truth.
