The Manhattan townhouse most recently reported as Bob Dylan’s former home is at 265 West 139th Street in Harlem, on Strivers’ Row. Reports say Dylan lived there from 1986 to 2000 and sold it in 2000 for $560,000. The house sold again on June 25, 2026, for $2.8 million. This is not the separate Turtle Bay townhouse at 242 East 49th Street that Dylan was also reported to have lived in.

Which Manhattan townhouse was Bob Dylan’s?

The recent sale coverage concerns 265 West 139th Street, in Harlem’s Strivers’ Row and within the St. Nicholas Historic District. Sotheby’s International Realty and 6sqft report that Dylan lived in the Harlem house from 1986 to 2000; 6sqft says he sold it in 2000 for $560,000. The Strivers’ Row association describes his ownership period as 14 years, a rounded account rather than a precise measurement of how long he lived there. 6sqft’s account and Sotheby’s sale report concern this Harlem address.

The name “Bob Dylan’s former Manhattan townhouse” can also point to a different home. Realtor.com’s 2024 story concerns 242 East 49th Street in Turtle Bay, which it describes as a five-story townhouse where Dylan lived in the 1970s and again in the 1990s. That property’s reported purchase and sale history is separate from the Harlem house.

242 East 49th Street Turtle Bay Lived there in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, according to Realtor.com Realtor.com reports a 1990 purchase for $1.45 million and a 2006 sale for $4.45 million

The two properties’ prices are not a like-for-like measure of appreciation: they are different houses, and the cited accounts do not establish a complete intervening transaction, renovation, or inflation-adjusted comparison. For the distinct Turtle Bay account, see Realtor.com’s 2024 story.

What happened in the 2026 sale?

The Harlem townhouse closed for $2.8 million on June 25, 2026, according to its Howard Hanna/REBNY RLS listing page. Sotheby’s reports that the property’s original asking price in 2025 was $3 million. The asking price and closing price describe different points in the sale, not competing reports of the same figure. Howard Hanna cautions that listing information is not guaranteed, so its property details should be understood as listing claims. See the closed listing page and Sotheby’s sale report.

How is the house described?

Sotheby’s describes the residence as a five-bedroom home of roughly 4,500 square feet across four floors and a cellar. Its report notes period moldings, restored hardwood floors, pocket doors, six decorative fireplaces, and a wood-paneled entry vestibule. The Howard Hanna listing describes zoned central HVAC, radiant-heated bathrooms, and a gated carport. These are features reported in the sale coverage and listing, not independently verified inspections.

What is distinctive about Strivers’ Row?

Strivers’ Row is a Harlem enclave whose buildings reflect several architectural groups. The neighborhood association describes the north side of West 139th Street as Italian Renaissance Revival, designed by Stanford White’s firm, McKim, Mead & White. Sale coverage identifies 265 West 139th Street specifically as built in 1893 and designed by White. The house’s description belongs to that wider architectural setting, but a claim about the whole row should not be mistaken for a building-by-building account. The association’s Strivers’ Row history explains the district’s architectural groups.

The association says the St. Nicholas Historic District was designated in 1967 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Those dates refer to the district; the available sources do not establish a separate designation date for this individual townhouse. The association also says walking tours are available, but does not identify a specific current operator or establish that a tour visits Dylan’s former home.
