Bone Tomahawk is a 2015 horror Western written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. Sheriff Franklin Hunt leads a small rescue party from Bright Hope after townspeople are abducted. It combines a slow-building Western journey with horror and unusually graphic violence; it is a fictional film, not a documented account of a real incident.
What is Bone Tomahawk about?
After a stranger arrives in the frontier settlement of Bright Hope and people are taken, Sheriff Franklin Hunt sets out with a small group to find them. The premise brings a rescue mission into the territory of a horror story, while retaining the Western setting and its familiar journey into danger. This spoiler-light description follows the film listings from Prime Video and the Leeds International Film Festival brochure; it should not be read as historical provenance.

How graphic is Bone Tomahawk?
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rates the UK cinema and home-entertainment versions 18 for strong violence. Its advisory mentions a ritualistic killing, bloody gunshot and arrow injuries, a throat being cut, and open wounds. It also notes a sex scene involving thrusting and brief sight of a woman’s breast. These details are plot-sensitive; readers who prefer to avoid spoilers may want to stop at the strong-violence warning. Consult the BBFC content advice for its full description.

Prime Video displayed a separate 16+ platform advisory, with categories including nudity, violence, substance use, alcohol use, smoking, foul language, sexual content, and flashing lights or strobing patterns. That platform label is not a universal age rating and is distinct from the BBFC’s UK classification.
How long is Bone Tomahawk?
Runtime depends on the listing and version. The AFI gives a duration of 132 minutes. The BBFC records a UK cinema version of 132 minutes 18 seconds, classified on 7 October 2015, and a home-entertainment version of 126 minutes 30 seconds, classified on 22 March 2016. Check the edition you plan to watch rather than treating these listings as one definitive runtime.

Where can you watch Bone Tomahawk?
Prime Video’s listing names Blu-ray as a format, but the page reported the film unavailable to stream there when checked in 2026. That status does not establish availability elsewhere or in every region: streaming and rental catalogues change, so check local services for current access. The listing is available at Prime Video.

The AFI categorizes the film as action/adventure, Western, drama, and horror. Its blend is deliberate: the rescue-party setup and frontier setting provide a Western framework, while the journey’s destination and graphic violence move it into horror. Zahler described his aim in the Leeds International Film Festival brochure: “Bone Tomahawk certainly isn’t for everybody, but it is the idiosyncratic, surprising, and character-driven western that I set out to make.”
