It marked a sharp change from the recent Rough and Rowdy Ways-centered format: the launch set included none of that album’s songs, four tracks from Tempest, and five reported cover debuts.
What Bob Dylan played in Alpharetta
The kickoff took place at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, near Atlanta. The set, reported by Rolling Stone and JamBase, moved between familiar Dylan songs, recent originals and a run of older covers.

Five covers were reported as live debuts
Contemporary coverage identified “My Babe,” “Little Queenie,” “Mr. Blue,” “Cold, Cold Heart” and “The Fool” as cover debuts for Dylan. Their writers span blues, rock and roll, pop and country, giving the set a distinctly different character from a night built mainly around Dylan’s own recent album.
The two outlets also noted the set’s unusual concentration of newer Dylan material: only “Under the Red Sky” and “A Simple Twist of Fate” had been recorded before 2000. “A Simple Twist of Fate” first appeared on Blood on the Tracks (1975). The four Tempest songs were “Pay in Blood,” “Early Roman Kings,” “Scarlet Town” and “Long and Wasted Years.”

Why the set was a departure
Before this tour launch, Dylan’s set had been relatively static and centered on songs from Rough and Rowdy Ways alongside selected older material, according to Rolling Stone’s report. Alpharetta had no songs from that 2020 album. Instead, it paired five newly reported covers with originals from the previous two decades and four tracks from Tempest.
“Stuns fans” was the original headline’s framing; the documented change in repertoire supports calling the set a surprise or a major shift, but the reports do not establish a measured audience reaction.

It was a launch-night set, not a fixed tour setlist
Dylan’s next performance, in Charlotte on June 22, changed the sequence and added “Six Days on the Road,” attributed to Paul Davis, as another cover debut. That show also included “Stella Blue,” a Grateful Dead song. The immediate variation is a reason to treat the Alpharetta list as a snapshot of the June 21 kickoff, not a promise of what Dylan would play at every Outlaw date.
A later, separate example shows how much the repertoire could differ by year: a Memphis Outlaw performance in 2025 listed “I Can Tell,” “Axe and the Wind,” “I’ll Make It All Up to You” and “Share Your Love With Me.” Those are not part of the 2024 launch set. For posted setlists and archive additions, Dylan’s official setlist archive is a useful primary reference; its later entries do not verify the details of this 2024 show.

Tour context at the time
Willie Nelson was billed as the festival headliner, but reports said he missed the first four dates in 2024 on doctors’ orders. Lukas Nelson and the Family Band filled in. This is context for the kickoff week only, not a statement about the festival’s current lineup.
