After the limited items sold out, online listings climbed into the hundreds of dollars—and one auction displayed bids above $24,000. That figure was disputed by the seller and was not a confirmed sale.
Why Bunnings turned its stores into Hammerbarn
In February 2024, Bunnings changed the exterior signage at its Cannington store in Perth and several other locations in Australia and New Zealand to resemble Hammerbarn, the fictional hardware store from the Bluey episode of the same name. In the episode, Bluey and Bingo pick items for miniature homes, including garden gnome “husbands.”
The promotion featured four gnome characters: Hecuba, Jeremy, Tony and Meditation Gnome. Bunnings sold them in stores for $19 each, according to PerthNow’s report on February 12, 2024.
What the resale listings showed in 2024
As the gnomes became hard to find, PerthNow reported eBay listings for individual gnomes above $100 and four-gnome sets starting at about $350. One seller in Churchlands told the outlet they had bought nine sets, listed each for $399 and sold them all; the seller said one set went for $425 that weekend. These were snapshots and seller-reported figures from February 2024, not a current valuation.

Another report of the resale rush came from PerthNow on February 29, 2024: some sellers were asking almost $900 for a set of four. The article also quoted Wesfarmers chief executive Rob Scott, who said the Hammerbarn stores had “materially outperformed in sales.” An asking price, however, shows what a seller wanted—not what a buyer paid.
Was the $24,000 auction a real sale?
No completed sale at that price was established. PerthNow saw an auction listing for four gnomes and other merchandise with displayed bids above $24,000. The New South Wales seller told the outlet that the bidding was not “for real life,” alleging that fake bidders using multiple Facebook profiles would not pay if they won. The report said the seller believed eBay had evidence and was investigating; PerthNow had sought comment from eBay. The displayed bid should not be treated as a verified sale or the gnomes’ market value.

Other coverage also captured extreme marketplace figures. 7NEWS reported listings of $100–$200 for gnomes and a registered bid of $9,999 for four gnomes and other items. Those, too, are reported listing or bidding figures, not proof of a completed transaction.
Why fans were angry—and how Bunnings responded
PerthNow described criticism in a Bluey Facebook group. Member Craig JayCee said he was reporting listings he considered price gouging. An anonymous fan said their two-year-old had missed out and objected to seeing the gnomes resold online. These are individual reactions, not a measure of all fans’ views.

Bunnings told PerthNow it was selling the range in stores only and placing limits on purchases to give more customers access, while acknowledging that Hammerbarn’s popularity had exceeded expectations. In a later release reported by 7NEWS, the gnomes were again priced at $19 each, with a four-per-customer limit and in-store-only sales. The four returning designs were Hecuba, Tony, Jeremy and Meditation Gnome; the release also added Bluey Groom Garden Gnome and Bluey Bride Garden Gnome.
Bunnings merchandise director Jen Tucker told 7NEWS the retailer was sorry some customers had missed out and was “incredibly disappointed” to see a small number of people reselling Bluey products online at inflated prices, adding that Bunnings did not support the behaviour.

Did Bunnings restock the gnomes?
Yes, a later release was reported in 2024, with the original four designs and two additions. The official Bluey site also documents a separate Bunnings campaign in August 2025, featuring new gnomes, rugs, Hammerbarn merchandise, in-store scavenger hunts, themed children’s trolleys and free workshops. It says Bunnings did not rebrand store exteriors for that campaign. The 2025 page confirms activity that year; it does not establish whether the gnomes are in stock now.

What to check before buying a resale listing
- Confirm the item: Check the character, condition and whether the listing is for an official Bluey/Bunnings gnome or a different product.
- Check the total: Compare the full price, including shipping, rather than the headline price alone.
- Distinguish asking from selling: A listing or displayed bid does not prove that an item sold for that amount. Look for a verified completed transaction.
- Review protections: Check the marketplace’s current buyer-protection rules and the seller’s history before paying.
