Yes, Blumhouse partnered with Meta—but the October 17, 2024 announcement described a filmmaker-feedback pilot, not a deal to make a full AI-generated movie. Blumhouse selected directors to test Meta’s experimental Movie Gen video-and-audio models, create work that incorporated generated clips, and share feedback with Meta researchers. The partnership did not announce a Blumhouse feature film, a public Movie Gen release, or a plan to replace conventional filmmaking.
What Blumhouse and Meta actually announced
Meta said Blumhouse would help it explore how working filmmakers might use Movie Gen and what they would need from the technology. Selected filmmakers tested the research-stage tools and provided feedback; Meta described the initiative as an early conversation with the creative community. Meta’s announcement does not describe a conventional production agreement, a licensing deal for a specific film, or a studio-wide adoption of AI.
That distinction matters: an AI-generated clip used within a larger piece is not the same thing as an entire film made by AI. The announcement does not say that Movie Gen generated a Blumhouse feature or that the filmmakers handed production over to the model.
Which filmmakers took part?
Meta named director Aneesh Chaganty, the Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck as participants selected by Blumhouse. Chaganty, known for Searching and Run, made the short i h8 ai, which Meta highlighted in its Movie Gen research materials. Meta said other work was forthcoming at the time. These were testing and creative-feedback roles, not evidence that each participant directed a fully AI-generated movie.

Meta’s materials also featured experimental videos by creators including Paige Piskin and Eric Rubens. They appeared in the broader showcase, but Meta did not identify them as members of the Blumhouse-selected filmmaker group.
What is Movie Gen?
Movie Gen was presented as a family of media foundation models, not simply a text-to-video app. Meta’s research described four broad capabilities:
- Generate video from text: create a clip from a written description.
- Edit existing video with text: request changes such as adding fog or altering an object.
- Personalize video: use an image to generate video featuring a person while seeking to preserve identity and motion.
- Generate audio: produce sound effects, background audio, and music to accompany video.
Meta said the research models could generate 1080p HD video with corresponding audio tracks. Its demonstrations—including generated scenes, creatures, object changes, and soundtracks—illustrate the company’s claims about model capabilities; they are not independent performance benchmarks or guarantees of consistent production-ready results. Why work with a horror studio?
Blumhouse is known for horror and genre production, where filmmakers often explore creatures, unsettling transformations, unusual points of view, and atmosphere. Those are natural areas in which to experiment with visual tools. That is a reasonable explanation for why the collaboration is interesting, not a stated reason from Meta for choosing Blumhouse. The announcement does not say that horror is easier for AI to generate or that every test was a horror project.

Blumhouse has other immersive and Meta-related activities, but those should not be confused with this Movie Gen pilot. The company’s own overview describes its broader film, television, immersive, and virtual-reality work.
What did the filmmakers find useful?
In its account of the pilot, Meta said participants saw potential in Movie Gen as a creative thought partner: a way to explore visual direction, try out tone and mood, and encounter unexpected ideas. They also explored generated sound effects and background audio. Meta acknowledged that the system was not a substitute for hands-on filmmaking experience. These are observations reported by Meta, not an independent evaluation of the filmmakers’ workflow or the model’s reliability.

The available announcement does not provide a detailed performance evaluation of the pilot. It therefore cannot establish how well the tools maintained character continuity from shot to shot, handled fine visual details, or fitted into a finished production. Nor does it show that generated material eliminated the need for conventional editing, compositing, sound mixing, or other creative work.
Could the public use the same tool?
Not when the Blumhouse partnership was announced. Meta described Movie Gen as still in development and said it did not plan to incorporate it into public products until the following year. The announcement provided no general Movie Gen subscription, API, or clearly stated production-ready commercial license.

There was a later, related public launch. In June 2025, Meta introduced generative video editing in the Meta AI app, on the Meta.AI website, and in Edits. At launch, Meta said the feature could transform 10-second videos using more than 50 preset prompts and was available in the United States and more than a dozen other countries. Meta described that feature as inspired by Movie Gen research—not as a public release of the exact research system used in the Blumhouse pilot. Details of that launch are in Meta’s June 2025 announcement.
So creators can try a consumer-facing Meta video-editing feature, subject to its current availability, but the available official materials do not establish that the full Blumhouse-pilot Movie Gen system is generally accessible to filmmakers.
What the pilot leaves unanswered
The announcement does not disclose the pilot’s contract terms, filmmaker compensation, training-data details, or commercial-use rights for generated output. It also does not establish how the system would address questions that matter in production: maintaining a visual style across scenes, documenting the provenance of generated material, obtaining consent for likenesses, and deciding how AI use should be credited or disclosed.

It suggests possible uses in visual experimentation and previsualization; it does not demonstrate that those tools are ready to scale across a studio or replace production roles.
