It sets up Shunsui Kyoraku’s confrontation with Lille Barro; the episode’s official synopsis confirms that Kyoraku stays behind to face Lille alone, while the Bankai discussion belongs to the episode’s spoiler territory.
What is Part 3 episode 9 called?
The episode is titled “DON’T CHASE A SHADOW.” The official BLEACH anime site numbers it episode #35. VIZ’s Part 3 episode list places it after episodes 27 through 34, making it the ninth installment of Part 3.
What happens in “DON’T CHASE A SHADOW”?
According to the official episode synopsis, Shunsui Kyoraku and Kisuke Urahara sense a change in Mayuri Kurotsuchi’s spiritual pressure and turn their attention to their own situation. Kyoraku chooses to remain behind and take on Lille Barro alone, so the other Soul Reapers can pass through enemy lines safely.
That decision frames the Lille fight as a deliberate sacrifice of position: Kyoraku holds the enemy back rather than risk slowing the others’ advance. The synopsis establishes this setup and choice, but it does not mention a Bankai release.

Does episode 9 reveal Shunsui’s Bankai?
The episode is associated with the reveal of Kyoraku’s Bankai, Katen Kyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju. Its appearance is the key spoiler behind claims that the installment introduces one of BLEACH’s most dangerous Bankai. “Deadliest,” however, is a subjective description, not an official franchise ranking or a measurable comparison. The claim is best understood as an expressive way to describe the Bankai’s grim, high-stakes nature—not as a canonically established title.
The distinction in sourcing matters: the official episode page confirms Kyoraku’s matchup with Lille and his decision to stay behind, but does not itself confirm the Bankai reveal. No attributable statement from a named person or official representative about the reveal, and no statistic ranking Bankai by lethality, is established here.
