Spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Nemu Kurotsuchi’s death is tragic on its own, but the episode’s added context gives it a sharper meaning: it asks viewers to see her not only as Mayuri Kurotsuchi’s obedient creation, but as someone whose choices matter. Calling this a fix for one of the anime’s “oldest mistakes” is a critical argument, not an official verdict. The stronger case is that the episode deepens a relationship that earlier scenes could leave looking one-sided.
Which death does the headline mean?
It means Nemu Kurotsuchi’s death in the Thousand-Year Blood War story, not Retsu Unohana’s. Unohana’s separate death completes her mission to teach Zaraki, according to her official character profile. Nemu’s story instead turns on her bond with Mayuri and the gap between being created to serve someone and having agency of her own.
Why did Nemu die in Bleach: TYBW?
The episode presents Nemu’s death as part of the conflict surrounding Mayuri, while its retrospective material gives the loss a personal dimension. The available episode recap argues that the flashback and death add characterization to both Nemu and Mayuri, changing how their earlier interactions read. That is an interpretation of the episode, rather than an official explanation of its intent.
The official character profile establishes the difficult foundation of their relationship: Nemu is Mayuri’s artificial konpaku and Squad 12 lieutenant, and is described as absolutely obedient to him. Mayuri, in turn, is described as using any means necessary in his research without regard for his subordinates’ lives. Those facts make the tragedy more than the loss of a lieutenant. They place it inside a relationship shaped by creation, authority and obedience.

What does Nemu’s death reveal about Mayuri?
It exposes the tension between Mayuri’s treatment of Nemu as something he made and the emotional weight her choices carry. The official profile’s emphasis on his disregard for subordinates’ lives is a deliberately stark starting point. The episode’s added context, as read by the recap, complicates that image: Nemu is not merely an instrument in his work, and what happens to her affects how viewers understand him.
That complication should not be mistaken for an erasure of Mayuri’s conduct. A more affecting response to Nemu does not undo the power imbalance that defined their relationship. The episode’s force comes from holding both ideas together: she was created within his authority, and her life cannot be reduced to that origin.

What “oldest mistake” does the episode appear to correct?
The phrase works best as a criticism of how Nemu could be read across the earlier anime: as a consistently obedient subordinate whose purpose was largely defined by Mayuri. That can make her seem less like a character with an interior life than a feature of his story. The TYBW episode’s retrospective material encourages a different reading by adding context to their relationship and giving Nemu’s death the weight of a character culmination, not just a plot event.
That is a persuasive way to describe the effect, but it is not proof that the earlier anime made an objectively settled error—or that every viewer read Nemu the same way. The official profiles establish her origin, rank and obedience; the claim that the episode “fixes” her characterization is an interpretation of how the new context changes the experience of those facts. A recap of the episode makes a similar argument about the added characterization, but it is secondary commentary, not an official consensus.

Is Nemu’s scene confirmed as a creator-led addition?
Not by the available evidence. In a VIZ interview published April 10, 2023, Tite Kubo said the TYBW anime includes extra scenes and that he supplied material for a new battle in Part 2. That establishes his broader involvement in additions to the adaptation; it does not establish that he specifically wrote or directed Nemu’s scene. The interview cannot be used as confirmation of the scene’s authorship.

Without the added context, Nemu’s obedience can appear to settle the question of who she is: Mayuri’s creation and subordinate. With the retrospective material, obedience becomes part of a more complicated history rather than her whole identity. The death then asks viewers to reckon with the person behind the role, while also confronting the terms on which that role was imposed.

That is the episode’s most defensible “fix”: not a claim that the series has erased every earlier limitation in Nemu’s portrayal, but that it supplies context capable of changing how those earlier scenes feel. The tragedy makes the relationship harder to dismiss as a simple creator-and-tool dynamic.
