What happens to Amanda at the end?
Rivermind’s service keeps Amanda’s cognitive functions going after she falls into a coma, but it binds her survival to a subscription that grows more demanding. The lower tiers restrict her time, movement and comfort, while the couple faces rising costs. Advertisements eventually interrupt Amanda’s speech.

By the time Mike and Amanda reach their anniversary, they have both lost their jobs while trying to pay for the service. Mike turns to humiliating online videos to earn money for temporary premium benefits. Amanda chooses serenity, then asks Mike to end her suffering “while I’m not there.” He smothers her while she is reciting an ad.
Creator and showrunner Charlie Brooker clarified that Amanda does not know she is delivering the advertisement at that moment: “When she’s advertising things, she’s not really aware it’s happening.” The scene therefore is not Amanda knowingly making one last pitch; her speech has become part of Rivermind’s intrusion into her life. Netflix Tudum’s official ending explainer, published April 14, 2025, recounts the scene and Brooker’s comments.

Does Mike die too?
The episode shows Mike enter the room where he recorded the videos and look directly at the camera. He then closes the door. It does not show what happens after that, so Mike’s death is not confirmed onscreen.
Rashida Jones, who plays Amanda, offered her own interpretation: “It’s sweet in a way, but I think he goes to join her.” That reading supports the possibility that Mike intends to die, but it remains Jones’s interpretation rather than an event the episode establishes. The distinction is simple: Amanda’s death is shown; Mike’s fate is left unresolved.

Why end the episode with an advertisement?
The ad is part of the episode’s larger mechanism of control. Rivermind sells a service presented as life-saving, then makes continued access costly and increasingly burdensome. The couple’s attempts to keep Amanda alive reshape their work, finances and daily life; even her speech becomes an avenue for advertising. Her death happens after those tradeoffs have worn them down, making the final act both a private decision and the endpoint of a commercial dependency.
Brooker said he began with the premise of “what if someone needs a subscription service to stay alive?” and the idea of someone running ads. He connected the ad interruptions to podcasts that break away from a conversation to pitch a product before returning to the discussion. He described Amanda’s request to be smothered while giving a pitch as “sort of perfectly bleak and perfectly Black Mirror.”
