Trent Clark ordered Jason Davies’s murder. Trent had accidentally killed Chinese Ambassador Chen and arranged the hits on Jason, Maggie and Phillip to hide his involvement. In the season 1 finale, Sam—not Helen—shoots Trent, taking that burden off Helen at a personal cost.

Why did Trent Clark order Jason’s murder?
Trent accidentally killed Ambassador Chen during an argument connected to Chen’s daughter, Kai-Ming. Jason, Maggie and Phillip had seen or could help expose what happened, so Trent ordered them killed to conceal his role in Chen’s death. Netflix’s season 1 ending explainer lays out the chain, which is also recounted by TV Guide.
Jason’s murder is the event that drives Helen to pursue the truth, but the finale reveals he was more than a man caught in Trent’s cover-up.

Who was Jason really?
Jason was an undercover MI5 operative assigned to investigate Helen and whether she was a spy leaking government secrets. He fell in love with her, but concealed what he had learned about her from his employers. The reveal, covered by The Independent and TV Guide, makes his relationship with Helen more complicated without changing who ordered his death: Trent acted to protect his own secret.
Helen chooses not to learn more about Jason’s file in the finale. His feelings for her were real within the story, but his assignment means their relationship also existed inside an investigation of her.

Why does Sam shoot Trent?
When Helen confronts Trent, Sam fires the fatal shot. The choice spares Helen from having to kill him, but it does not set Sam free from violence or the consequences of the surviving Clarks.
Creator Joe Barton described the act to Netflix as a reciprocal sacrifice: “The idea was that Sam makes a personal sacrifice for his friend because he loves her, and because, as you see in Episode 3, she sacrificed her own chance to get out in order to help him. He’s there to do anything for her, so he does it.”

What do the final scenes mean for Helen and Sam?
Helen remains with the Black Doves and intends to continue delivering government secrets. Wallace’s political rise increases the stakes for that work. The finale also reveals that Marie, the Webbs’ nanny, is a spy working for Reed; The Independent identifies her as the nanny seen with Reed.
Sam’s decision leaves him entangled in the assassin world rather than giving him a clean exit. The ending resolves the immediate question of Jason’s killer, while keeping both leads bound to the dangerous lives they hoped to leave behind.

Where does season 1 fit in the series?
Netflix’s series overview describes Black Doves as a six-episode spy thriller starring Keira Knightley as Helen Webb and Ben Whishaw as Sam Young. Jason’s assassination prompts Reed to call Sam in to protect Helen while she investigates who killed Jason and why. The series is available to stream on Netflix; availability may vary by country.
