Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Hang the DJ ends by revealing that Frank and Amy’s relationship took place inside a dating system’s simulation. In the real world, the app reports that 998 of 1,000 simulated versions rebelled against its rules—a 99.8% match. Creator Charlie Brooker called the ending “playful and hopeful,” but the episode stops just as the real Frank and Amy meet; it does not show whether they become a couple.
Were Frank and Amy in a simulation?
Yes. The Frank and Amy we follow are simulated versions living inside the Coach dating system. Their world assigns partners and sets how long each relationship will last. The final reveal reframes their experiences as tests run by the app, rather than events that happened to the real pair before the bar scene.
Within the simulation, Frank and Amy agree not to check the duration of their relationship. Frank secretly looks, sees its expiration time, and changes how he behaves. When Amy learns he broke their agreement, they separate and go through other matches. Before her next pairing, Amy chooses one last meeting with Frank and proposes that they escape the system. When she touches a guard’s taser, the scene freezes; they run toward the edge of their world, and the simulation gives way to multiple versions of the pair.
What does 998 out of 1,000 mean?
The Coach system runs 1,000 versions of the simulation and counts how often Frank and Amy rebel. The episode’s on-screen result is 998 rebellions, which is the basis for the 99.8% match shown for their real-world counterparts. Brooker says the two versions that did not rebel would be matched with random people before their simulated worlds ended.

Those numbers describe the fictional app’s result, not a real-world measure of compatibility or a prediction that a relationship will succeed. The episode and Brooker’s explanation establish the story’s premise, not a technical account of how an actual dating app could run such a system.
What did Charlie Brooker say about the ending?
In an Entertainment Weekly interview republished by Yahoo Entertainment on December 29, 2017, Brooker said, “I hope the takeaway is that it’s playful and hopeful.” He described the real-world meeting as the algorithm bringing Frank and Amy together, with their relationship still at its first step. The bar scene is therefore an optimistic beginning, not proof of a lasting match.

Brooker also explained why the episode gives Frank and Amy a five-year relationship duration in one of the simulations: “Five years seemed like you’d go, ‘Okay that’s a reasonable amount of time for a serious relationship, a serious bond.’” The duration is part of the fictional system’s test, not a claim that the pair’s real relationship lasts five years.
Why is the dating system called Coach?
Brooker described the premise as a “service that was a bit like Spotify for dates” that could “generate a playlist of relationships.” In this idea, Coach arranges a sequence of relationships before selecting an ultimate match. Brooker discussed the analogy in an NME report on a Netflix featurette published January 15, 2018.

The idea also gives the episode its tension: a system promising to sort through endless possible partners can make relationships feel temporary and choice feel overwhelming. Executive producer Annabel Jones connected the story to the abundance of potential partners and the risk of treating relationships as disposable in a TheWrap interview republished by Yahoo Entertainment. That is a reading of contemporary dating culture, not evidence that real dating apps simulate relationships in the way Coach does.
Is the ending happy, or is it still unsettling?
It is hopeful in its immediate emotion and uneasy in its premise. Brooker’s description supports the playful, hopeful reading: the real pair notice each other at the bar, and the story leaves them at the start of a possible relationship. At the same time, their meeting follows a system that has staged and evaluated simulated versions of their intimacy. The episode holds both ideas together rather than showing what the couple chooses next.

What does “Panic” have to do with the ending?
The final scene uses The Smiths’ “Panic.” Its refrain, “Hang the DJ,” gives the episode its title and plays over the real Frank and Amy’s first encounter. The song’s defiant line fits the simulated pair’s refusal to follow the system’s rules, while the closing scene leaves open whether the real pair will accept the app’s match or make their own choices.
