Black female cosplayers share work across anime, gaming, makeup, wig styling, costume design and original character creation. A useful place to begin is with creator names highlighted in recent features, then follow the recurring #28DaysOfBlackCosplay hashtag, online groups and community events to find more. Treat any list of accounts as a starting point, not a live directory: check a creator’s current public profile for their handle, activity and preferred name or credit.
Creators to look up
Otaku Asylum’s February 2025 spotlight names several creators whose work spans anime, gaming, original designs, makeup, wigs and costume design. Search Instagram for Coccalenaa, Coco Bree Cosplay, Samurai Stevie, Jina Fire and Pixyi Mayri (also identified as Short E Cosplay). These are discovery leads, not verified current account links; confirm the spelling and profile directly before following, sharing or crediting a post.
The feature described Jina Fire as Blerdcon’s 2024 Black Cosplayer of the Year. That is a dated recognition, not a current ranking of creators. There is no reliable basis here to rank the people named by quality, audience size or current activity.

Chaka Cumberbatch founded #28DaysOfBlackCosplay in 2015 to encourage and highlight Black cosplayers. It is observed each February and offers a way to discover creators through posts, tags and the people participating in the campaign. Crunchyroll described the campaign as reaching its tenth anniversary in 2025.

Okayplayer’s guide, published around 2023, reported that the hashtag had appeared on more than 70,000 Instagram posts at that time. That is a historical count, not a current total. Search the tag for recent posts and follow the trail to creators’ profiles rather than relying on an old count or recommendation list.
Look beyond the Instagram feed
Online groups and event communities
Okayplayer’s beginner guide also points readers toward online groups and Black-organized or Black-owned events. These spaces can help people meet cosplayers, learn about gatherings and participate beyond following individual feeds. Shonen Pump Party DJ Contro1freak described the value of such spaces to Okayplayer: “It’s important in general for Black cosplayers to have a safe space where they can go and cosplay outside of conventions.” Check organizers’ current pages for event dates, locations and participation details.

ATL Black Fae Fest
An Associated Press report published May 15, 2026, offers a recent example of a Black cosplay and fantasy gathering: ATL Black Fae Fest, with creative activities and community programming. Founder Janelle Newell told AP, “Seeing this community continue to grow into a genuine family and safe space for whimsical Black creatives means everything to me.” The report illustrates how discovery can lead from a social feed to in-person community; it does not establish current dates or details for future events.
What the work includes—and what cosplay allows
Cosplay is not limited to anime, and a cosplayer does not have to choose a character who shares their race. The creators in the 2025 spotlight are described as working across anime, gaming, original designs, makeup, wigs and costume design. Individual profiles may also reveal a focus on sewing, performance or other craft; use the creator’s own public description rather than assuming their interests from a costume photo.

Older coverage can help surface additional names, but it needs extra checking. A VICE feature from around 2019 discussed @kieraplease and @mimithenerd; a 2020 Off Colour profile identified UK creator Mimi as @mimithenerd_ on a Twitter-linked profile. Those references are historical and may reflect changed or different handles. Search by name and confirm the present account and preferred credit before linking to or reposting anyone’s work.

Black women cosplayers’ experiences are not uniform. In a 2022 interview, Cheyenne Ewulu discussed the lack of representation she felt for women who looked like her, racialized criticism of her Korra cosplay and her motivation to make a documentary where cosplayers could describe their experiences. VICE’s earlier reporting also documented pressure on some Black women to cosplay only Black characters.

A 2023 study based on an adult survey and interviews reported more negative backlash among Black and female cosplayers, while also describing positive experiences among many participants. It is a limited study, not a population-wide measure or a description of every creator’s experience. The value of following creators is not just seeing costumes: it can also mean encountering the perspectives and community-building they choose to share.

A respectful way to follow and share
- Verify before naming. Check the current public profile and use the creator’s preferred name, handle and self-description.
- Credit the creator. If sharing an image or costume, follow the creator’s stated credit and reuse preferences; a public post is not blanket permission to republish an image.
- Follow the creator’s lead. Don’t infer identity, location, fandom or craft specialty from a single image.
- Engage without policing character choice. The reporting documents racialized criticism and pressure over which characters Black women should portray.
- Keep discovery current. Use recent hashtag posts and organizers’ current event information instead of treating old recommendations, handles or follower counts as present-day facts.
