Trent Clark ordered Jason’s murder to cover up his role in Ambassador Chen’s death. In the finale, Helen has Trent at gunpoint, but Sam shoots him instead. Series creator Joe Barton says Sam acts out of love for Helen and to spare her the burden of killing Trent herself.
Who ordered Jason’s death?
Trent ordered the killings of Jason, Maggie and Phillip after Ambassador Chen died during a heated argument with him. Chen’s death was accidental; the murders followed as Trent tried to conceal his part in it. That chain makes Jason’s death a consequence of Trent’s cover-up, not an unrelated hit.

Helen also learns that Jason had a hidden life: Reed gives her a hard drive revealing that Jason was an MI5 agent investigating whether she was leaking government secrets. Helen throws the drive into the Thames without opening it. Barton interprets that choice as Helen holding on to what she knew was real about Jason rather than replacing those memories with the information on the drive: “What was in his heart, ultimately, was the one thing that she knew was real, so that act of saving her was real, and that’s all she needed.”
Why does Sam kill Trent instead of Helen?
Helen has Trent at gunpoint, but Sam fires first. Barton says Sam wants to protect Helen from having to kill a young man who, in his view, made a terrible mistake. As Barton puts it: “He does it because he loves [Helen] and because he owes her and because he’s trying to protect her from the burden of killing that kid.”

The choice is morally complicated. Sam has a code against killing innocent people, while Trent has done real harm by ordering the murders. Barton describes Trent as a gentle soul who made a terrible mistake, not as someone whose actions should be excused. Sam’s decision can be read as an act of love for Helen and a personal sacrifice: he takes the violence onto himself rather than leave her to do it.
Do Sam and Michael end up together?
No settled future together is shown. After killing Trent and Alex Clark, Sam knows he has put himself in danger and cannot safely be with Michael. The dance at Michael’s flat plays as a goodbye neither man can quite bring himself to say aloud. Sam’s decision protects Helen, but it costs him the chance of an ordinary future with Michael.

What happens to Helen and Wallace?
Helen and Wallace remain together and celebrate Christmas with their children, even though they continue to keep secrets from one another. Barton says they accept each other’s flaws more than before: “They accept each other for who they are a little bit more, flaws and all.” Their ending is neither a clean reset nor a full confession; it shows a marriage continuing with a more candid acceptance of its compromises.
What is left unresolved at the end of Season 1?
- Sam and Lenny: Sam has not killed Lenny. Barton says the gunpowder smell comes from Sam killing the Clarks.
- Hector’s offer: Sam is weighing Hector’s offer, but the finale does not settle what he will do next.
- Helen and Reed: They may continue working together, but Barton describes tension between them and the possibility that they could become enemies. That is a possible future, not a resolved outcome.
