Netflix says streaming can use up to 0.3 GB per hour on Low, up to 3 GB per hour in HD, and up to 7 GB per hour in 4K—per device. Those are approximate ceilings, not fixed rates: actual use varies with playback quality, device, title, connection and viewing time. A two-hour 4K movie could use roughly 14 GB at Netflix’s published estimate.
Netflix data use at a glance
These are Netflix’s published estimates for streaming on one device. “Up to” matters: they are not guaranteed amounts for every show or session. Netflix’s data-usage guidance also lists mobile-specific estimates.

The mobile options are estimates for cellular playback, while Low, Medium and High are profile playback settings. Do not treat them as a promise that a particular resolution or exact hourly rate will be delivered.
What a viewing session can add up to
Multiply the hourly estimate by the time watched. The examples below are arithmetic based on Netflix’s published figures, not separate measurements.

Actual film runtime changes the total: a 90-minute movie is about three-quarters of the two-hour example, while a three-hour film is about 50% more. Monthly figures assume exactly two hours of continuous viewing each day and exclude every other household use of the connection.
Usage is per device. Two simultaneous HD streams could approach twice the usage of one, depending on how each stream adapts. Autoplay, previews, live video and a TV left playing also add traffic; a paused stream generally stops normal video transfer, but playback left running does not.

Why Netflix’s actual usage varies
- Picture quality: Higher resolution generally takes more data. Netflix lists up to 3 GB/hour for HD and up to 7 GB/hour for 4K, not fixed rates.
- Adaptive streaming: Netflix can adjust quality based on connection conditions. Automatic aims to balance quality and data use or provide the highest possible quality for the connection. A fast connection does not guarantee every title is always streamed at maximum resolution.
- Device, plan and title: 4K depends on a compatible plan, device, connection and title. The Netflix U.S. plan page lists Standard and Standard with ads at 1080p, and Premium with 4K + HDR, while qualifying availability by device, service and content. Plan features and availability vary by country and can change; see the Netflix plan page for current details.
- Encoding and measurement: Different titles and playback conditions can produce different bitrates. Independent testing has reported roughly 6.5–11 GB/hour for some 4K sessions; that is third-party testing, not Netflix’s official rate. See Android Authority’s testing.
- More screens: Netflix’s figures apply per device. Several people streaming at once can multiply household totals.
Netflix recommends a connection of at least 3 Mbps for HD 720p, 5 Mbps for Full HD 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are speed recommendations, not monthly data allowances: Mbps describes how quickly data can move, while GB measures how much data accumulates over time. Lower mobile-data use
In the Netflix app, the current path is My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage. Labels can vary by app version, device, operating system or country. Options are:

If a setting is unavailable, Netflix says Automatic may be enabled or downloads may be pending. Turn off Automatic, cancel pending downloads or wait for them to finish, then check again. Details are in Netflix’s data-usage help.
Adjust playback quality for a profile
To change a profile’s general playback setting in a browser: open the Netflix Account page, select Profiles, choose the profile, open Playback settings, and select the desired data-usage setting. Netflix saves the preference automatically. The setting is profile-specific, so adjust each profile that needs it. Lower use may mean lower picture quality. Menu names can change.

Wi-Fi, home broadband and hotspots are different allowances
Wi-Fi only changes which connection carries the stream; it does not make the data disappear. Streaming over home Wi-Fi can still count toward an ISP’s monthly cap. Streaming through a phone hotspot usually uses the mobile plan’s hotspot or tethering allowance, which may have separate terms.

- Home Wi-Fi: May count against the home ISP’s allowance if the service has a cap.
- Hotspot: Usually counts against mobile-plan hotspot data, subject to the carrier’s rules.
Download over Wi-Fi before travel
Downloading a title before leaving can keep the later viewing session off cellular data. Netflix supports downloads on compatible Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. Downloads still use data when transferred, so use Wi-Fi if you want to avoid mobile charges; a capped home connection may still count that transfer. Not every title is downloadable, and downloads can expire or be restricted by licensing. See Netflix’s download guidance and why some titles cannot be downloaded.

Downloads are stored on the device used to get them. Netflix’s current help page says ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month; ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to plan device limits. Account cancellation removes downloaded titles from the device. These limits and availability can change, so check the current help page.
Downloads for You automatically saves recommended titles over Wi-Fi. It does not use cellular data, but can use home broadband data and device storage; it is unavailable on ad-supported plans. To switch it off, open My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Smart Downloads, then toggle Downloads for You off. See Netflix’s Downloads for You instructions.
Check whether Netflix caused a data spike
- Check your phone’s app-level counter. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular and review Netflix’s usage for the current period. On Android, look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections, then mobile-network or app data usage. Exact labels vary; counters may need to be reset at the start of a billing cycle to match your plan period.
- Check the ISP or router total. A household counter can include every TV and streaming stick, phones, game consoles, backups, security cameras, software updates and other services—not just Netflix.
- Look for simultaneous or unattended playback. Check other household devices, autoplay and a TV left running.
- Inspect downloads. Check whether Downloads for You or another download is consuming Wi-Fi data and storage.
- Change one setting, then compare. Lower playback quality or set mobile playback to Wi-Fi Only, then compare the next usage period. A short, controlled check can help isolate one device; ISP totals may take time to update.
A Netflix-specific traffic counter may not be available on every television or streaming device. Use the ISP dashboard or router monitor for household totals, and avoid assuming Netflix is the only cause of a bill increase.

4K is a reasonable choice if you have a compatible large display, a plan and title that support it, a connection that can sustain it, and enough data allowance for the potential usage. Netflix recommends at least 15 Mbps for 4K UHD; its U.S. plan page currently associates 4K + HDR with Premium. Neither a 4K TV nor a fast connection alone guarantees 4K playback.
If your priority is avoiding overages, 4K is the least forgiving choice: Netflix’s estimate is up to 7 GB per hour, or up to 420 GB for two hours daily over 30 days. HD may be a better picture-quality/data compromise, while SD or a mobile Save Data setting can reduce use further. A more expensive plan does not save data; it can unlock higher-resolution viewing.
