Yes—Netflix can work on a smart TV without Wi‑Fi, but normally not without internet. Use an Ethernet cable when a router is available, a phone hotspot when cellular data is available, or HDMI from a phone or tablet with Netflix downloads when the viewing location has no internet at all. The TV’s own Netflix app does not generally provide an offline-download mode.

Choose the method that matches your situation

Situation Best method Internet while watching? Main limitation
Router works, but TV Wi‑Fi is poor or unavailable Ethernet cable Yes The TV must be wired to the router or network switch.
No home broadband, but cellular service works Phone hotspot Yes Uses hotspot data and depends on signal and carrier rules.
No internet at the viewing location Download on a supported phone or tablet, then use HDMI No, after downloading The mobile device and adapter must support wired video output.
The TV lacks a working Netflix app Streaming device, computer, or compatible phone/tablet via HDMI Usually yes Extra hardware does not remove the need for internet.

First, define “without Wi‑Fi”

These phrases describe different problems:

  • Without wireless Wi‑Fi: Ethernet can connect the TV to the same internet service by cable.
  • Without home Wi‑Fi or broadband: A phone hotspot can provide internet over the cellular network.
  • Without any internet: Only content downloaded in advance to a supported mobile device is a realistic Netflix option.
  • Without using the TV’s Netflix app: A computer, phone, or tablet can act as the player through HDMI.

Netflix describes TV playback as requiring a supported device connected to the internet, while its download guidance focuses on phones, tablets, Fire tablets, and compatible Chromebooks: supported devices and download requirements.

Method 1: Connect the TV by Ethernet

Ethernet is usually the most stable choice for a fixed television. It replaces the wireless link, not the internet service itself.

What you need

  • A TV with a LAN or Ethernet port.
  • An Ethernet cable with a practical length. Cat5e or newer is generally sufficient for streaming.
  • An active internet router or network switch connected to that router.

Setup

  1. Plug one end of the cable into the TV’s LAN/Ethernet port.
  2. Plug the other end into an open LAN port on the router or network switch.
  3. Open the TV’s network settings.
  4. Select Wired, Ethernet, or LAN, then allow automatic network configuration unless your household uses manual settings.
  5. Open Netflix and test a title.

Menu labels differ among Samsung, LG, Roku, Google TV, Fire TV, Vizio, and other platforms. Netflix distinguishes cable-connected devices from Wi‑Fi devices in its troubleshooting guidance: network connection troubleshooting.

TP-Link AC1300 USB WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC 2.4/5G Dual Band WiFi Dongle
  • AC1300 Dual Band Wi-Fi Adapter for PC, Desktop and Laptop. Archer T3U provides 2.4G/5G strong high speed connection throughout your house.
  • Archer T3U also provides MU-MIMO, which delivers Beamforming connection for lag-free Wi-Fi experience.
  • Usb 3.0 provides 10x faster speed than USB 2.0, along with mini and portable size that allows the user to carry the device everywhere.
  • World's 1 provider of consumer Wi-Fi for 7 consecutive years - according to IDC Q2 2018 report
  • Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14

Why choose Ethernet?

  • It avoids wireless interference and a weak signal.
  • It does not consume mobile data.
  • It is well suited to sustained HD or 4K streaming when the internet service and TV support those formats.

The router still needs active service, and a distant or wall-mounted TV may make cable routing inconvenient. Some TV Ethernet ports are slower than the set’s Wi‑Fi hardware, so the model and network determine actual performance.

Method 2: Use a phone as a mobile hotspot

A hotspot turns a phone’s cellular connection into a temporary Wi‑Fi network. The TV connects to it as if it were an ordinary wireless network. Apple documents this as Personal Hotspot, while Android provides equivalent hotspot controls: iPhone instructions and Android instructions.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot (on some versions, it is under Cellular).
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join and note the displayed password.
  3. On the TV, open Settings and then Network or Network & Internet.
  4. Choose Wi‑Fi, select the iPhone’s hotspot name, and enter its password.
  5. Open Netflix and sign in if requested.

Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network & internet, Connections, or Hotspot & tethering.
  3. Enable Wi‑Fi hotspot or Mobile Hotspot, then confirm the network name and password.
  4. On the TV, open network settings, choose Wi‑Fi, select the phone’s hotspot, and enter the password.
  5. Test Netflix playback.

Android menu names and available frequency controls vary by manufacturer. Google also describes Bluetooth and USB tethering, but a TV will normally use the Wi‑Fi hotspot method: Pixel hotspot options.

Hotspot precautions

  • Keep the phone near the TV and connected to a charger; streaming can drain the battery and create heat.
  • Check whether your carrier imposes a separate hotspot allowance, throttling, or tethering restriction.
  • If the TV cannot see the network, try the phone’s compatibility or 2.4 GHz setting, toggle hotspot sharing off and on, and rescan.
  • Disable a VPN temporarily during setup and avoid public networks with captive-portal sign-in pages.

TCL confirms that compatible TVs can connect to a phone hotspot, while noting that phone settings and carrier policies affect behavior: TCL hotspot guidance.

Netflix setting Approximate maximum use
Low Up to 0.3 GB per hour
Medium Up to 0.7 GB per hour
High, standard definition Up to 1 GB per hour
High, HD Up to 3 GB per hour
High, Ultra HD/4K Up to 7 GB per hour

That means a two-hour HD film could use up to about 6 GB, while a two-hour 4K film could use up to about 14 GB. Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K: speed requirements. A hotspot may briefly reach those speeds yet still buffer because of congestion, weak signal, latency, deprioritization, or a hotspot cap.

Reduce usage

  1. In a browser, open Netflix and go to Account.
  2. Under Profiles, select the profile.
  3. Open Playback settings.
  4. Choose a lower data-use setting and save if prompted.

The mobile app also offers My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Cellular Data Usage. Netflix lists additional automatic and data-saving estimates here: data usage settings.

Check the TV’s connection

  1. Open Netflix.
  2. Press Back on the remote to open the Netflix menu.
  3. Choose Get Help, then Check your Network. On some interfaces the option is under Settings.

Method 3: Download first, then watch through HDMI

This is the practical route when there is no internet where you will watch. Netflix downloads are supported on selected Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with Google Play. Netflix’s cited download guidance does not support downloads in its Windows app: download availability.

Prepare before leaving internet access

  1. While online, open the Netflix app on the phone or tablet.
  2. Choose a title showing the Download icon and tap Download.
  3. Wait for completion, then open Downloads and play the title once.
  4. Check storage, update the app, and bring the correct video adapter, HDMI cable, and charger.

A title may have expiration, licensing, plan, or download-limit restrictions. Netflix’s “Downloads for You” feature also requires Wi‑Fi for downloading and is unavailable on ad-supported plans: Downloads for You.

Android and USB‑C devices

  1. Connect a USB‑C-to-HDMI or other compatible video adapter to the device.
  2. Connect HDMI from the adapter to the TV and select that HDMI input.
  3. Open Netflix, choose Downloads, and start the title.

The device’s USB‑C port must support external video, and the adapter must support video playback rather than charging or data only. Netflix discusses USB‑C and Thunderbolt video requirements in its adapter guidance: cable and adapter support.

iPhone and iPad

For Lightning models, Netflix identifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter and lists model numbers A1438 and A1621. USB‑C iPhone and iPad models need a compatible USB‑C video adapter. A physically fitting adapter is not automatically video-compatible.

Wired playback can show black bars, and autoplaying the next episode is not supported through a video cable or adapter. Netflix does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad.

Casting and screen mirroring are conditional

Casting normally requires the phone and receiver to share the same local Wi‑Fi network. Netflix’s supported cast list is limited to devices such as Chromecast (third generation or older without a physical remote), Google Nest Hub displays, and select Vizio and Compal TVs: cast support.

A phone hotspot can sometimes provide the shared network, but some phones cannot remain both hotspot and casting controller, and some receivers isolate hotspot clients. Casting and mirroring also depend on plan and country. Netflix currently states that casting or mirroring requires a Standard or Premium plan, while ad-supported plans cannot use a TV as a display for mobile playback: device and plan limitations and ad-supported restrictions.

Screen mirroring may produce a black screen, audio without video, playback errors, or a disconnect. Android manufacturers may label it Screen Cast, Smart View, Wireless Display, or DeX. For genuinely offline viewing, direct HDMI is more dependable than either casting or mirroring.

Troubleshoot the common failures

The TV cannot find the hotspot

  • Move the phone closer, restart both devices, and toggle hotspot sharing.
  • Use a simpler network name or password and enable a 2.4 GHz or compatibility mode if available.
  • Remove old saved networks from the TV.
  • Confirm cellular data works and that the carrier permits hotspot use.

Netflix opens but buffers or will not play

  • Run Netflix’s network test and lower playback quality.
  • Stop other devices using the hotspot and turn off VPN or private-DNS features temporarily.
  • Check for a carrier hotspot limit or congestion; use Ethernet if a router is available.

Netflix specifically warns that mobile hotspots and cellular networks may be too slow or unstable: mobile network troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cast icon is missing

  • Confirm the receiver is on Netflix’s supported list and that both devices share the same network.
  • Check plan eligibility, local-network permission on iPhone or iPad, and app/software updates.
  • If the hotspot isolates clients, use HDMI instead.

HDMI shows a black screen

  • Select the correct HDMI input and test another cable.
  • Verify that the adapter supports video output and that the phone or tablet supports external displays.
  • Use the correct Apple adapter model where applicable, connect directly without an unsupported splitter, and play from Netflix’s Downloads area.

The Download button is missing

The title may not be licensed for download, the device or operating system may be unsupported, storage may be insufficient, the app may be outdated, or a plan, region, or download limit may apply. Netflix explains that a missing icon means the title may not be available offline: download troubleshooting.

If the TV does not have Netflix

Netflix supports many current TV and streaming-device categories, including Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Hisense, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Roku, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Vizio, Toshiba/TVS REGZA, game consoles, and provider-supplied devices. Older equipment, particularly some models made before 2015, may no longer be supported: Netflix device compatibility.

Use a supported streaming stick or media player, a laptop connected by HDMI, or a compatible phone/tablet with a wired adapter. Verify the exact model and country support before buying; a new streaming device still needs internet unless you use the separate downloaded-device-and-HDMI method.

Which setup should you choose?

  • Choose Ethernet when a working router is nearby and you want stable, repeatable streaming without mobile-data costs.
  • Choose a hotspot for travel, temporary outages, or locations without broadband when cellular coverage and hotspot allowance are adequate.
  • Choose downloaded content over HDMI when there is no internet at the viewing location and your phone or tablet supports compatible wired video output.
