Billy Joel brought Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio onstage at Madison Square Garden on June 8, 2024, for two songs featuring Anastasio on guitar and vocals, plus guitar on the ending of a third. It was the second-to-last scheduled date of Joel’s MSG residency—not the finale, which was set for July 25.
When was Billy Joel’s penultimate Madison Square Garden residency show?
The concert took place Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Joel’s official site described that date as “TWO SHOWS LEFT” and listed July 25, 2024, as the “FINAL SHOW,” making June 8 the penultimate date in the announced residency schedule. Billy Joel’s November 2, 2023 announcement also called the July finale his 150th lifetime performance at the Garden.
What songs did Trey Anastasio play with Billy Joel at MSG?
The Phish.net setlist archive lists Anastasio as a guest and documents three contributions during the June 8 show:
- “Sleeping with the Television On” — guitar and vocals.
- “You May Be Right” — guitar and vocals during the encore.
- “Layla” — guitar on the ending only.
The archive records the concert’s broader sequence, but that does not mean Anastasio performed every song on the setlist. These guest details come from the fan-maintained June 8, 2024 setlist record.

How does the June 8 appearance fit into Joel’s MSG residency?
The distinction between the guest appearance and the finale matters: Anastasio joined Joel on June 8, while the residency’s scheduled closing performance was July 25. Joel’s official announcement said more than 1.6 million tickets had been sold for the residency overall, with fans from all 50 states and more than 120 countries; those are run-wide figures, not attendance or sales figures for the June 8 concert. The same announcement described the monthly Garden residency as unprecedented in scope and ambition.
Was the performance officially released?
The cited event listing and official residency announcement do not establish that an official audio or video release of the June 8 performance exists. They also do not provide an individual ticket price or attendance figure, or a named-person quote about Anastasio’s appearance.
