Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, said on Jan. 8, 2025, that their longtime Pacific Palisades home was lost in the Palisades Fire. In their statement, they reflected on raising their children and grandchildren there and on the memories they said would remain with them.
What Billy and Janice Crystal said about losing their home
The couple announced the loss in a joint statement reported by the Associated Press on Jan. 8, 2025. The Los Angeles Times also reproduced their remarks. They described the scale of the disaster and their grief, while emphasizing their connection to neighbors facing similar losses.
“Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing,” the couple said. “We ache for our friends and neighbors who have also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”
A family home since 1979
Crystal and Janice said they had lived in the Pacific Palisades house since 1979 and raised their children and grandchildren there. The couple described it as a place shaped by family life rather than simply a building:

They said they were heartbroken, but would get through the loss with support from their children and friends. They also called the Pacific Palisades a resilient community and wrote, “It is our home.”

AP described it as the Crystals’ home of 45 years in its Jan. 8 report; later coverage rounded that period to 46 years. Their own wording—“since 1979”—is the clearest way to state the timeline without suggesting the span was calculated from a different date.
The loss was part of a wider disaster
The Palisades and Eaton fires began on Jan. 7, 2025. In a 2026 retrospective, the Associated Press reported that the fires killed 31 people, destroyed about 13,000 homes and other residential properties, burned for more than three weeks, and took about seven months to clean up. These are AP’s retrospective totals, not early estimates issued during the emergency.

The Crystals’ statement placed their loss alongside those of friends and neighbors. Their home was one among many properties affected; their account does not make their experience unique to the disaster.
Crystal later spoke publicly about the fire
AP later reported that Crystal hosted the FireAid benefit concert at the end of January 2025 in the clothes he had worn when fleeing the family home. The report also described his return to the wreckage: he said he cried, and his daughters found a rock inscribed with the word “Laughter.”

AP also reported that Crystal planned an intimate one-man show called “860,” drawing on the home and the family’s life there. The report said previews were planned for October 2026, but it did not establish whether performances began or confirm a current schedule.

The cited reports do not establish the house’s exact address, the family’s insurance coverage, or whether they plan to rebuild. Those details should not be inferred from the couple’s announcement or from later accounts of the fire.
