Matthew Mellon died in Cancun, Mexico, on April 16, 2018, while attending a drug rehabilitation facility, according to contemporary reports. His age is reported differently: a family statement reproduced by Fortune called him 53, while the family-published obituary and several other reports said he was 54. The reports reviewed here do not establish a cause of death.
What happened to Matthew Mellon?
Mellon’s cousin Peter Stephaich confirmed his death to the Associated Press, but declined to provide details. News reports placed Mellon’s death at a rehabilitation center in Cancun. Fortune reported that a family representative said he died suddenly there while attending a drug rehabilitation facility. These accounts establish the reported setting, not a medical explanation for his death.
The date is consistently given as April 16, 2018. The family-published obituary, published by The Palm Beach Post via Legacy.com, records his passing on that date. The Associated Press report republished by CBS News and coverage by Fortune also placed his death in Cancun.
Why do reports give his age as both 53 and 54?
The age of 53 in the headline follows the family representative’s statement reproduced by Fortune on April 17, 2018. The obituary gives his age as 54, as do the Associated Press report republished by CBS, ABC News Australia, and El País. The reviewed accounts do not explain the discrepancy, so neither age should be presented as universally agreed.

What was known about the reported rehabilitation setting?
Mellon had spoken publicly about his addiction to OxyContin, a prescription opioid. ABC, reporting on April 18, 2018, quoted him from a 2016 New York Post interview: “OxyContin is like legal heroin. And it needs to be addressed.” That history helps explain why rehabilitation figured in coverage of his death; it does not show that addiction caused his death.
The distinction matters: Stephaich confirmed the death but gave no details, while the rehabilitation setting came through the family-representative statement and other reporting. None of the cited accounts establishes a specific medical cause.
