Production had wrapped by September 8, 2026, but the studio has not announced a release date or viewing platform.
What has been confirmed about the film?
Focus Features announced on September 8, 2026, that production had wrapped on the adaptation. Eilish stars as Esther Greenwood. The studio describes the role as her feature film debut, a more precise description than her first acting role: Variety and The Guardian report that she previously appeared in the television series Swarm.
Sarah Polley directs and adapted the screenplay. The announced cast also includes Carey Mulligan as Mrs. Greenwood, Danielle Deadwyler as Dr. Nolan, Dylan Hawco as Buddy Willard, Lili Taylor as Jay Cee, Ella Beatty as Joan, Maggie Kuntz as Doreen, Ike Barinholtz as Lenny, and Connor Storrie as Marco. Plan B, STUDIOCANAL, and Joy Coalition are named as producers. Focus Features’ production-wrap announcement provides the official details.
When will The Bell Jar be released?
No release date, streaming service, rental option, or home-viewing format appears in the official production-wrap announcement. Earlier March reporting said Focus Features would release the film in the United States, but did not give a date. Until the studio announces more, there is no confirmed schedule or platform to plan around.

What is the story behind The Bell Jar?
Plath’s only novel, first published in 1963, follows Esther Greenwood, a young woman experiencing mental illness amid the restrictive social expectations placed on women in the 1950s. The film adapts that novel; it is not a documentary. Focus Features says the book has remained continuously in print and sold millions of copies worldwide, without specifying an exact total.

For readers who want to know the story the film adapts, Plath’s The Bell Jar is the direct starting point. The novel’s 1963 publication is distinct from the film’s release, which has not been dated. No film tie-in edition or movie merchandise has been announced.

Why Eilish’s casting is a feature-film debut
The “debut” label refers to a feature film, not to Eilish’s first acting appearance. She has acted on television, including in Swarm. In her Saturday Night Live monologue, quoted by The Guardian, Eilish said: “I used to say that I hated acting. But the truth is, when I was little, I loved it! My mom and dad were both actors. So is my brother, Finneas. And it was my dream to be in a movie.”
March coverage described her casting as tentative; the later studio announcement confirms her starring role. Read Variety’s March report and The Guardian’s March coverage alongside the studio’s September confirmation for that change in status.
