Yes. Most movies bought or rented through Apple can play on a projector, but the entire digital connection must satisfy Apple’s HDCP copy-protection requirements. The most dependable arrangement is an Apple TV 4K connected directly to the projector by HDMI.
A Mac with HDMI, or an iPhone or iPad with a compatible Digital AV adapter, can also work. A VGA-only projector, an incompatible HDMI converter, or a failed switch/receiver in the signal path may show the computer desktop yet produce a black screen when the protected film starts.
What you need
Apple TV 4K
- Apple TV 4K, HDMI cable, and an HDMI-equipped projector.
- Wi-Fi, or Ethernet if using the Ethernet model.
- Projector speakers, a soundbar, powered speakers, or an AV receiver if better sound is needed.
Apple’s US store listing checked for this article showed Apple TV 4K at $199 for 64GB Wi-Fi and $249 for 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet; the HDMI cable is sold separately. Verify the listing for your country before buying: Apple TV 4K buying page.
Mac
- A Mac with HDMI, or a compatible USB-C/Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter or dock.
- A short, known-good HDMI cable.
- The Apple TV app and the Apple Account used to buy or rent the film.
iPhone or iPad
- USB-C Digital AV adapter for a USB-C device, or Lightning Digital AV adapter for a Lightning device.
- HDMI cable and an HDMI input on the projector.
Apple’s adapter guidance covers connecting iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to a projector and warns that protected films may require HDCP: Apple Digital AV adapter support.

Best method: Apple TV 4K directly to the projector
Apple TV 4K provides a dedicated Apple TV app interface for purchased and rented films. Treat the projector as the display: it must support the resolution, HDR format, and HDCP handshake negotiated by the Apple TV.
- Turn off the Apple TV and projector.
- Connect the Apple TV’s HDMI output directly to the projector’s HDMI input. Do not use a splitter, switch, receiver, soundbar, wireless HDMI kit, or capture device during initial setup.
- Turn on the projector and select the HDMI input you used.
- Connect Apple TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Sign in with the Apple Account that owns or rented the movie.
- Open the Apple TV app, open your library or purchased/rented content, select the film, and start playback.
For 4K HDR, Apple specifies an HDMI 2.0-or-later cable and a display that supports the relevant 4K/HDR format: Apple TV 4K setup requirements. Establish direct playback first, then add an audio receiver or other equipment one component at a time.
Connect a Mac
- Connect the Mac directly to the projector by HDMI. If the Mac has only USB-C or Thunderbolt, use a compatible digital HDMI adapter or dock.
- Select the projector in macOS display settings if it is not detected automatically.
- Select the projector’s HDMI input.
- Open the Apple TV app, sign in to the associated Apple Account, and play the film.
A visible Mac desktop does not prove that protected video will work. If the desktop appears but the film turns black, suspect HDCP. Remove hubs, docks, converters, switches, extension cables, and wall plates; try another projector HDMI input and a shorter cable. Temporarily testing 1080p instead of 4K or SDR instead of HDR can identify a signal-negotiation problem, but it is not a guaranteed permanent fix.
Connect an iPhone or iPad
- Plug the correct USB-C or Lightning Digital AV adapter into the device.
- Connect HDMI from the adapter to the projector.
- Select the projector’s HDMI input.
- Open the Apple TV app and start the purchased or rented film.
HDMI carries video and audio. VGA does not, and Apple says protected films may fail over a VGA connection. If you use VGA for other content, audio requires a separate connection to the projector, stereo, or headphones. See Apple’s compatibility and troubleshooting guidance at support.apple.com/108399.

Warm Tip: Fan noise at 1 m ranges from 29-35 dB by mode; steady fan sound is normal.
AirPlay: useful, but not universal
A projector’s generic “casting” feature is not automatically an AirPlay receiver. Check the exact model’s documentation for native AirPlay support.
The dependable wireless bridge is iPhone, iPad, or Mac → AirPlay → Apple TV → HDMI → projector. Apple documents redirecting video from iTunes or an iOS device to Apple TV, which then connects to the display: Apple AirPlay documentation. A wired HDMI connection is preferable when wireless discovery or network reliability is uncertain.
Why HDCP causes black screens
HDCP is an authentication handshake, not merely a connector type. Every link must cooperate:
Apple device → adapter → HDMI cable → switch/receiver/soundbar → projector

Failure can produce a black screen with audio, an “HDCP-compatible device required” message, playback that stops when the feature begins, flicker, or video that works only at one resolution. Apple’s media terms require an HDCP connection for video content: Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
There is no single HDCP-version rule for every film. The required capability depends on the source, title format, resolution, HDR mode, projector, cable, and intermediate equipment. Check the exact projector manual or specification sheet. For example, BenQ documents some models with HDMI 2.0b/HDCP 2.2 inputs for HDR signals: BenQ HDR and HDCP specifications. An Epson EF-100 product page identifies HDMI and HDCP 1.4, illustrating why model numbers matter: Epson EF-100 specifications.
Fix “HDCP required,” a black screen, or missing audio
- Bypass the chain: connect Apple TV, Mac, iPhone, or iPad directly to the projector.
- Check the input: select the correct HDMI input and try another HDMI input on the projector.
- Replace the cable: use a short, certified, known-good cable rated for the required bandwidth. Apple specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for Apple TV 4K 4K HDR.
- Reduce the signal temporarily: try 1080p, SDR, or a standard refresh rate.
- Update everything: install available Apple-device, projector, receiver, and soundbar firmware updates.
- Restart in order: turn off source and projector; connect the direct HDMI cable; turn on the projector and select HDMI; turn on the source; retry playback.
- Test another title: if only one film fails, the title or its available format may be involved. If every protected film fails, the chain is the stronger suspect.
Once direct playback works, add a receiver, soundbar, switch, wall plate, extender, or long cable one at a time. Long runs, couplers, optical HDMI cables, and extenders can make an otherwise valid HDCP handshake intermittent.
Audio choices
- Apple TV to projector: the projector receives audio over HDMI and can use its built-in speaker.
- External sound: route audio through a soundbar, AV receiver, powered speakers, or a compatible wireless device according to that equipment’s instructions.
- Mac, iPhone, or iPad over HDMI: audio normally travels with the HDMI signal.
- VGA: HDMI-to-VGA conversion does not carry audio; use a separate audio connection, and do not expect protected films to work reliably.
An AV receiver or soundbar placed between the source and projector becomes another possible HDCP failure point, so remove it while diagnosing video.

Rentals and purchases are different
Rentals
Apple’s terms say a rental must be started within 30 days and completed within 48 hours after playback begins. Pausing, stopping, or restarting does not extend that 48-hour period, and a rental is viewable on one device at a time. Test the projector, cable, and audio before pressing play on a rental: Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
Purchases
A purchase is not an unrestricted MP4 file. Playback remains subject to Apple Account authorization, app and DRM rules, and HDCP. Apple says purchased content can sometimes become unavailable if distribution rights change and encourages downloading and backing up content; availability and formats also vary by country and title. Do not attempt to remove DRM, record the film, or bypass HDCP; Apple’s terms prohibit tampering with or circumventing security technology.
When the projector cannot work
VGA-only projector
Do not rely on HDMI-to-VGA conversion for protected Apple films. Apple specifically warns that its VGA adapter may produce an HDCP error and that format converters may be incompatible. Replace the projector with an HDMI/HDCP-capable model, use the old unit only for unprotected material, or use a modern display for the film.
HDMI projector with obsolete or undocumented support
“Has HDMI” is not enough. If the projector lacks documented HDCP support, cannot accept the desired resolution or HDR mode, or fails with multiple known-good sources and cables, replacement is usually more practical than adding another converter.

Buying and setup checklist
- Confirm an HDMI input and the exact model’s HDCP capability.
- Match the projector’s supported resolution and HDR formats to the Apple TV or computer output.
- Use an appropriately rated, short HDMI cable while testing.
- Check available audio outputs and whether the built-in speaker is adequate.
- Check firmware support and the projector’s manual, not just its “streaming” or “casting” marketing.
- Plan cable length carefully; avoid unnecessary couplers, extenders, and wall plates.
- For a mounted or shared setup, consider Apple TV 4K. For a nearby computer, a direct Mac connection is often the least expensive route. For portability, use the correct iPhone/iPad Digital AV adapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a VGA projector for an Apple movie?
Not reliably for protected films. Apple identifies HDCP as a requirement and warns that VGA adapters and format converters may fail. An HDMI/HDCP-capable projector is the dependable solution.
Why does my Mac desktop show but the movie is black?
Protected playback performs an HDCP check that ordinary desktop output may not. Connect the Mac directly to the projector, remove docks and switches, try a known-good cable, and test another HDMI input.
Can I AirPlay directly to any projector?
No. The projector must explicitly support AirPlay, or an Apple TV must receive AirPlay and connect to the projector by HDMI.
Does Apple TV 4K require a 4K projector?
No. It can be used with a compatible 1080p projector, but the projector and every device in the chain must support the negotiated signal and HDCP requirements.
Will an HDMI splitter or receiver work?
It may, but each added device must pass HDCP correctly. Establish a direct source-to-projector connection first, then add components individually.
The Bottom Line
Use Apple TV 4K directly over HDMI when you want the simplest projector experience. A direct Mac or iPhone/iPad Digital AV connection is also viable. If the projector is VGA-only or its HDMI path cannot complete HDCP, no ordinary picture-setting change will make protected Apple video dependable; replace the failing part of the signal chain.
