Use the Download button in Prime Video for a title offered there; use USB file transfer for a personal, DRM-free movie file. These are different methods: Prime Video downloads stay inside the app, while a compatible personal video can be copied to the tablet and played with a media app.
Amazon now calls its tablets Fire tablets; “Kindle Fire” is the older, still-common name. Menus and ports vary by model and Fire OS version. To check your model, look under Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet, or the equivalent device-information screen.
Choose the right method for your movie

Streaming-app availability, offline downloads, and licensing vary by service, country, device, and account. A Kindle e-reader is different from a Fire tablet: Amazon’s Send to Kindle file guidance covers supported documents and images, not a general method for adding movie files.
Download a movie in Prime Video
- Connect the Fire tablet to Wi-Fi and open Prime Video.
- Search for the movie and open its detail page.
- Tap Download. If prompted, choose a quality or storage location.
- Wait for the download to finish, then open Downloads or the device section in Prime Video.
- Play the movie from inside Prime Video.
Amazon’s Prime Video download instructions say the movie download control is on its detail page; TV episodes can be downloaded individually or by season. Not every title is eligible, and licensing can affect availability or how long a download remains playable. A title may also require the app to reconnect periodically to check account or licensing status.

The download is app-managed, not a video file to browse to in Files, copy to a computer, or open in another player. Amazon also says downloaded titles cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay. Storage-location options vary: the help page describes location selection in Android and Windows apps, but does not establish that every Fire tablet or title can use removable storage. Do not move app download files manually expecting them to work elsewhere.
Transfer a movie from a Windows PC
Connect and enable file transfer
- Unlock the tablet and connect it to the PC with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
- Swipe down from the top of the tablet screen and tap the USB notification, which may read Charging this device via USB.
- Select File Transfer, Transfer files, or similar wording. Labels vary by Fire OS version.
- On the PC, open File Explorer and select the Fire tablet under connected devices.
Amazon’s current Fire tablet USB instructions identify the notification-shade transfer control. Older Kindle Fire documentation describes the equivalent approach of opening the tablet as external storage and dragging files onto it; that older layout should not be assumed to match every current model.

Copy the file and disconnect
- Open Internal Storage, or the microSD-card storage if you have chosen to use it.
- Copy the video into a straightforward folder such as Movies or Download. A particular player may require you to browse to or scan that folder.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Eject the tablet in Windows if offered, then unplug the cable.
- Open Files or a media-player app on the tablet and browse to the folder.
A cable that only charges will not transfer files. If Windows does not show the tablet, see the troubleshooting section.
Transfer a movie from a Mac
Connect and unlock the tablet as you would for a PC, then choose Transfer files from the USB notification. Unlike Windows, macOS may not display a Fire tablet as a normal drive; use a current, reputable Android-compatible file-transfer utility if it does not appear. Open the tablet’s storage in that utility, copy the video to Movies or Download, wait for the transfer to finish, and disconnect safely.

If the Mac still cannot access the tablet, check the cable and USB mode first, then try another port or computer. Older Kindle Fire instructions may refer to a storage view that no longer matches your tablet’s software.
Use a microSD card or cloud storage
If your Fire model supports expandable storage, a microSD card can hold personal movie files and reduce pressure on internal storage. Confirm your exact model’s support and capacity limits, and check how the card is configured. Whether an app can save its downloads to a card depends on the app, Fire OS, card setup, and content licensing. A card does not turn a Prime Video download into a transferable movie file.

Cloud storage is another way to retrieve your own files without a cable, but you need a compatible app or browser and an internet connection for the initial download. A data-capable cable, supported card, or additional player is only needed if the method or file you choose calls for it.
Find and play the transferred movie
Open the Files app and look in Movies, Download, or the card location where you copied the file. You can also open your video player and browse to that folder. Do not assume every Fire OS version automatically puts sideloaded videos into one universal library: older Fire documentation refers to the Photos or Personal Videos app, while current behavior depends on the model, software, and player.

If a site offers a legitimate movie download, use its official download control. The file may appear in Silk’s Downloads area or Files. It may play directly or be movable to another folder, depending on its format and protection. A browser download is not necessarily equivalent to a service’s official offline download; do not use unauthorized sites or try to extract protected streams.

A container is the file wrapper—such as MP4, MKV, or 3GP. Inside it, the video and audio use codecs; a player can recognize the container but still fail on a particular codec, audio track, subtitle format, resolution, or profile.
For broad compatibility, a sensible starting point is an MP4 file containing H.264 video and AAC audio. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee for every tablet. For example, Amazon’s Fire 7 (2022, 12th generation) specifications list MP4, 3GP, MKV, and OGG among supported media containers and identify MPEG-4 video support. Amazon’s device comparison table lists audio formats including AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3, MP3, Vorbis, FLAC, PCM/WAV, and Opus for relevant devices. Neither list guarantees that every combination works on every model or in every player.
- Check the specifications for your exact Fire model rather than relying on an extension alone.
- Do not rename a file to .mp4 and expect conversion; renaming does not change its codecs.
- If a DRM-free file does not play in the built-in player, try a reputable compatible media player or legally convert the file to a compatible format.
- Do not try to strip DRM from a streaming-service download.
Fix common transfer and playback problems

Delete a movie and reclaim space
Personal video file
In Files or the player, find the file, long-press it, and choose Delete or Remove. If the app has a trash or recycle area, empty it to reclaim the space.
Prime Video or Amazon app download
Remove the offline copy using the title’s download controls or device-management options inside the relevant app. Deleting an offline copy does not necessarily remove a purchase from your account library; Amazon’s older first-generation Kindle Fire video guide describes a purchased download remaining available in the cloud for later download. Current app controls and licensing can differ.
