Prince’s philanthropy was often private, but the surviving record shows a consistent interest in opening doors: to education, creative work, green jobs, and technology careers for young people who were often excluded from them. His support for Van Jones’s #YesWeCode initiative made that commitment especially visible. Prince did not found or run the program; he backed it, promoted its aims, and helped bring attention to the idea that coding could offer economic independence.
A public life, and much giving out of view
Prince was globally famous, yet much of his charitable work became widely known through recipients’ and associates’ accounts rather than a public ledger. Activist Van Jones described Prince as someone who often gave without seeking recognition. Jones said Prince sent an anonymous $50,000 gift to support Green for All, the organization Jones helped establish around green jobs and economic opportunity. The Guardian reported Jones’s account; it is evidence of a particular gift, not a complete measure of Prince’s giving.

Jones also connected Prince’s preference for privacy to his Jehovah’s Witness faith. That is Jones’s explanation, not a verified motive for every donation. Some of Prince’s support was publicly announced, while other giving surfaced later through interviews, reporting, and records. There is no comprehensive public accounting of his lifetime donations, so “quiet philanthropist” is more accurate than claiming that all his giving was secret.
Love 4 One Another: aid close to home
Prince and his then-wife, Mayte Garcia, launched Love 4 One Another in 1996, following the death of their infant son. Garcia later described the charity’s origins and work in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune. The organization provided direct assistance and supported community groups, including programs serving children and disadvantaged communities.

According to CBS Minnesota’s reporting on federal tax forms, Love 4 One Another made more than $1.5 million in grants from 2005 through 2007. That figure applies to those years only; it is not a total for Prince’s lifetime philanthropy. Love 4 One Another should also be distinguished from Live 4 Love Charities, a later organization associated with Garcia.
Why technology opportunity mattered
Prince’s support for technology access fit a broader interest in independence and access to opportunity. In a 1997 Yahoo! Internet Life interview, he discussed the Love 4 One Another website, online fan communities, and the potential for artists to distribute music directly over the internet. The interview offers a glimpse of his early interest in digital tools and bypassing traditional intermediaries; it does not establish a formal technology-philanthropy strategy. That perspective helps explain why coding education could appeal to him: technology was not only an industry, but a route to creative and economic independence. In his 2014 Essence interview, Prince spoke about #YesWeCode, whose stated ambition was to help 100,000 young people from low-opportunity communities learn to code and pursue technology careers. The initiative focused on groups underrepresented in the technology workforce, including Black youth. Prince’s interview with Essence documents his public association with that goal.

Contemporary coverage also described Prince’s support for the initiative, including the Chronicle of Philanthropy and GeekWire. The distinction matters: the evidence supports calling Prince a donor, public advocate, and influential supporter—not the founder, curriculum designer, or operator of #YesWeCode.

Green jobs and racial justice
Green for All linked environmental work with employment and economic opportunity. Jones’s account of Prince’s reported $50,000 anonymous donation places him within that effort, which addressed clean energy and climate concerns while seeking opportunity for disadvantaged communities. Jones also said Prince supported Black Lives Matter and other racial-justice causes. Those recollections indicate the breadth of Prince’s engagement, but they are not a full inventory of his political activity or giving. Investments in Minnesota schools and arts education
Prince’s giving was not limited to nationally visible campaigns. Minnesota reporting documented a $200,000 gift to Harvest Prep and Seed Academy and a $30,000 donation to Chanhassen Elementary School. Reported school support included art field trips, supplies and equipment for students with special needs, and an electric piano. The Star Tribune’s account of his charitable activity and CBS Minnesota’s reporting describe these and other local contributions, including support for organizations working in early education, literacy, homelessness, and community development.
He also made a substantial public gift to arts education. In 2011, Prince donated $250,000 to American Ballet Theatre’s educational programs, with the gift expected to support scholarships and youth access to the arts. The Los Angeles Times reported the donation. It is a useful reminder that his support for opportunity included artistic training as well as technology.
Paisley Park and the limits of the legacy
Paisley Park was more than Prince’s home and recording studio: it was a creative environment where artists worked across music and film. The venue’s official history describes that role. Its later public access and educational programming belong to the broader legacy around Prince, but should not automatically be treated as programs he personally operated or funded during his lifetime.

Former Paisley Park employees established the PRN Alumni Foundation to support underserved young people in music, technology, arts, and education. The foundation reflects how close associates interpret Prince’s values; it is a posthumous organization, not a foundation run by Prince.
The evidence for Prince’s philanthropy comes from different kinds of sources: contemporaneous announcements, tax forms cited in local reporting, interviews with recipients and associates, and Prince’s own public comments. Those sources establish meaningful examples but not a complete total or a single centrally administered strategy. Together, they show a recurring principle: investing in people and institutions that could widen access to creative, educational, and economic possibility.
