The contrast complicates the poem’s survival message: his advice may help her endure hardship, but it also leaves her expecting pain. The poem is studied in South African Grade 12 English First Additional Language materials.
What happens in the poem?
The speaker remembers being a child as her father tells her she needs to toughen up. He threatens to show her chickens being killed, then draws her into another encounter with injury: she holds an injured pigeon while he stitches its throat. He presents life as a fight for survival and tells her to roll with the punches.
Later, the speaker anticipates hardship. When she returns from hospital with a wound, her father dresses it with practiced hands and says nothing. The closing words recall his earlier instruction, but this time “Toughen Up” is not spoken aloud.
How does the father’s lesson change meaning?
Toughness taught through exposure
The opening, “You need to toughen up,” puts the father’s blunt voice first. His lesson is physical rather than abstract: the threatened sight of a slaughtered chicken and the injured pigeon make suffering visible to the child. As she holds the pigeon, its “pumping chest” brings vulnerability close. The scene can be read as harsh instruction, but the act of holding the bird also places the child beside an injured creature that needs care.

Authority in the way he speaks
The father loudly declares, “You see life is a fight for survival,” and says, “You gotta roll with the punches.” The poem likens his delivery to lecturing students or giving an inaugural address. That comparison makes his voice sound formal and performative, as if he is delivering a doctrine rather than responding gently to a child’s fear.
Care without the speech
In the hospital scene, the father’s hands do what the earlier speech could not: they tend to the speaker’s actual wound. His silence changes the emotional register. The ending’s “Life’s a bastard / Toughen Up” can be heard as inherited wisdom, a painful echo of childhood, or both. The poem leaves that tension open rather than resolving it into a simple lesson.

What do the hawk and the anticipation of harm suggest?
The hawk circling above the pigeon connects the animal’s danger with the speaker’s later sense that harm is waiting for her. She describes a “flinching anticipation” and waits for “that bitter / roughness” to find her. These images support a reading in which her father’s lessons foster resilience but also train her to expect danger. The poem does not say that toughness removes fear; the speaker’s anticipation suggests that fear remains part of how she meets life.
How can students compare the poem’s two registers?
| Earlier memories | Hospital scene |
|---|---|
| Shouted instruction about toughness | Silent, practical attention to the speaker’s wound |
| A child is exposed to animal injury | The speaker returns with an injury of her own |
| Survival is explained as fighting and taking blows | Care is shown through the father’s hands |
| The speaker learns to anticipate hardship | The father responds after hardship has arrived |
This contrast is more useful than treating the poem as a straightforward endorsement of “toughening up.” The father’s care does not erase the force of his earlier lesson, and his bluntness does not erase his tenderness.

What are the poem’s form and study context?
A study guide describes the poem as a lyric in free verse, with eight unequal stanzas and 43 lines; the Western Cape Government’s May/June 2025 English FAL examination numbers 43 lines. Stanza divisions, capitalization and punctuation can differ between copies, so use the text set by your class or examination. One study-guide transcription prints a later first-person pronoun as lowercase “i”; do not treat that as universal.
The poem is attributed to Beverly Rycroft in South African Grade 12 English FAL examination materials. SACAI’s indexed 2026 prescribed-literature listing associates it with Voices of the Land, edited by B. Walter; the listing itself could not be independently confirmed from the page. The available sources do not establish the poem’s original publication date or venue.

What should readers avoid assuming?
Interpret the speaker and father as figures in the poem, not as direct evidence about Rycroft’s life. A study guide reports biographical details, including awards and a cancer diagnosis, but those details do not establish that this poem is autobiographical. The sources reviewed also do not provide a verified statement from Rycroft explaining the poem, so interpretations should be presented as readings of its language and structure, not as the poet’s stated intention.
