For a first XSplit test, use 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are starting values based on YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a music-specific preset or guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. If your computer or upload connection cannot sustain them, test 720p30 at 3 Mbps instead; YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for that format. YouTube’s current encoder settings and XSplit’s available options should guide the final configuration.
Recommended XSplit settings to test first

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; they are platform recommendations, not measured performance results. XSplit’s output settings documentation says encoder choices vary by hardware, drivers, and service. Use a compatible option available in your output, and leave advanced encoder settings at their defaults unless a platform requirement or a specific configuration calls for a change.
Configure XSplit and test the stream
- Build the scene. Add the audio and visual sources you want to broadcast. XSplit scenes are layouts made from sources. Set the canvas resolution and frame rate before starting the stream; XSplit’s streaming output guidance covers setup.
- Connect the YouTube output. Use XSplit’s platform setup for YouTube, then confirm the correct channel and event in YouTube Studio. The encoder needs the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Set the output encoding. Open the output’s properties and set resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate mode, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio encoding to the values you intend to test. If an option is unavailable, do not assume every codec or advanced control exists on every system.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the actual music and visual content. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages, and listen on a separate device to confirm audio playback, level, and image quality. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring the stream during the event.
- Check the connection under realistic conditions. Measure upload capacity while other devices and normal household or workplace traffic are present. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth room above the stream’s total bitrate; do not plan to consume all available upload capacity.
- Repeat after changes. Test again after changing XSplit, drivers, sources, encoder settings, or network equipment. Testing can reveal problems but cannot guarantee uptime.
Choose resolution and bitrate for your setup
1080p30 for a sharper static presentation
Start at 1080p30 when the artwork, documentary stills, or other visual elements benefit from the extra resolution and your system has enough encoding capacity. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. A static image may not need as much bitrate as fast motion, but that is a practical hypothesis to check with a test stream, not a separate YouTube recommendation.
720p30 when you need a lighter load
Try 720p30 if your upload connection or computer struggles with 1080p30. YouTube’s H.264 table lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate at 720p30. The 3 Mbps figure is a minimum, not a guarantee of good-looking video; inspect the result at the quality viewers will use.

Keep upload headroom
The bitrate is not the only demand on the connection: other network traffic can reduce what is available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room. Its streaming tips also warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream, so a fast speed test alone is not proof that a long broadcast will remain stable.
Latency, monitoring, and the limits of a 24/7 setup
For a music stream intended mainly for background listening, low latency is usually less important than reliable playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering for viewers; choose a latency setting based on whether live audience interaction matters, then verify playback during a test.

No XSplit setting in the cited platform guidance guarantees a 24/7 broadcast, automatic recovery, or a particular restart schedule. Plan to monitor stream health and decide how you will respond to a failed connection, encoder error, or interrupted source. YouTube’s guidance puts the emphasis on testing and monitoring rather than promising continuous operation.
There is also an archive limitation to plan around: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated condition, so do not assume YouTube will preserve the whole run as one archive. Check YouTube’s current workflow if saving the programme is important.

Check music rights before you go live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, or temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. For licensed third-party music, the rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone does not necessarily prevent an interruption. Use music for which the channel has the necessary rights and platform clearance, and confirm any allowlisting with the rights holder. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
