For most VTubers who use a camera only for face tracking, a well-lit 1080p webcam is the sensible place to start. A more expensive or higher-resolution model is worth considering when its video will also appear on screen, you need room to crop, or you plan to record with it. Before upgrading, improve your front lighting and camera placement: a clear, stable view of your face often matters more to tracking than extra pixels.
What makes a webcam good for VTubing?
A webcam provides an image of your face to the tracking software. It does not improve the avatar’s artwork or rendering by itself. Tracking consistency also depends on lighting, camera placement, the software, and your computer’s performance.
Choose for the job you need the camera to do. If it is only feeding a tracker, a usable, well-lit image is the priority. If viewers will see the camera feed too, image detail, framing flexibility, and recording needs may justify a higher-end model.
Do you need to buy a separate webcam?
Not necessarily. Start with the camera you already have—such as a laptop camera or smartphone—if it gives your tracking application a clear, usable view of your face. Streamlabs lists both as possible starting points in its VTuber webcam guide. Test your actual setup before spending money.

How to choose a webcam for your setup
Match resolution and frame rate
Do not judge a camera by its headline resolution alone. Resolution and frame rate work together: a camera may offer 4K at 30 frames per second or 1080p at 60 frames per second, and the right choice depends on how you will use the feed. Check the exact resolution-and-frame-rate combinations supported by the model, along with compatibility with your computer and VTuber software.
Consider what viewers will see
For tracking only, extra resolution may not add enough value to warrant an upgrade. Higher resolution can be more useful when the webcam feed is visible in your stream, you want to crop or reframe it, or you intend to record video with the camera. Keep the face large and clear in the tracking view even if you crop or mask a separate on-screen camera feed.

Look at lighting, focus, and framing
Put a soft light in front of you so the tracker can see your face clearly. Avoid strong backlighting, such as a bright window behind you, and check that exposure and motion blur do not obscure facial features. Position the webcam so your face remains visible and unobstructed. If you move around while creating, consider whether the camera can keep a useful focus; for a seated setup, stable framing and face size may matter more.
Check practical fit before buying
Verify the exact model, supported modes, operating-system and software compatibility, USB requirements, privacy features, current price, and regional availability. These details can vary by model or market and should be confirmed with the manufacturer or retailer before purchase.

Webcam examples to consider
These are starting points to compare, not a tested ranking or universal winners. Product details, availability, and prices can change; confirm the current specifications for your region before buying.

Streamlabs’ model suggestions come from a guide published in 2022, so treat them as examples rather than current test results. Set up your webcam for reliable tracking
- Start with the camera you have. Open your VTuber application and select the intended webcam. Check that it shows a clear, usable view of your face.
- Improve the light. Place a soft light in front of your face. Reduce harsh shadows and avoid a bright light source or window behind you.
- Set the camera position. Frame your face clearly and keep it unobstructed. Avoid a position that makes your face too small for the tracker.
- Check the image while you move. Look for exposure problems, motion blur, or focus changes that make facial features hard to see.
- Separate tracking and presentation needs. If the webcam also appears on screen, crop or mask that feed as needed without making the face too small in the tracker’s view.
- Only then decide whether to upgrade. If the existing camera still cannot provide a usable view under good lighting and placement, compare replacements by their actual modes and fit for your use case.
Common webcam problems and what to check
- The tracker loses your face. Check that the VTuber application is using the intended camera, improve front lighting, and adjust framing so your face is clear and unobstructed.
- Your face looks dark or washed out. Change the light placement and check exposure. Avoid a bright background that makes your face difficult to see.
- Movement looks blurred. Check the lighting and camera mode, then verify that the selected resolution and frame rate are appropriate and supported by your setup.
- The camera feed looks good, but tracking is inconsistent. A visible feed is not the only factor: software, camera placement, lighting, and computer performance also influence tracking.
- You cannot select the camera or preferred mode. Confirm operating-system and VTuber-software compatibility, the camera’s supported modes, and any USB or computer requirements from the manufacturer.
Or let it run in the cloud
