For most YouTube face-cam streams, a good 1080p webcam is enough. Choose 1080p60 if smooth motion matters; choose 4K when you have a specific need to capture, crop, or record at 4K and your computer and connection support it. Among the models covered here, Logitech Brio is the flexible choice for 4K capture plus 1080p60, while the original Elgato Facecam and Facecam MK.2 are 1080p options with streaming-oriented controls. These are buying recommendations based on published specifications and reviews, not hands-on test rankings.

Which webcam should you choose?

Webcam Why consider it Check before buying
Logitech Brio 4K Logitech’s current US product page lists 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at up to 60 fps, autofocus, automatic light correction, adjustable fields of view, three framing presets, integrated microphones, and a mount. Confirm the exact Brio generation and your computer’s connection. The older BRIO 4K Stream Edition support specification says USB 3.0 is needed for 4K; USB 2.0 is limited to 1080p/30 fps. That legacy note should not be assumed to apply to every Brio model.
Elgato Facecam (original) Digital Camera World describes this streaming-focused model as an uncompressed 1080p60 webcam with image adjustments through Camera Hub. The cited review says the original Facecam has no built-in microphone or autofocus. Check current specifications for the exact model you are considering.
Elgato Facecam MK.2 Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide reports 1080p at up to 120 fps, customizable settings, a privacy shutter, and built-in settings storage. It is a separate model from the original Facecam and has no built-in microphone. The 120 fps specification is specific to MK.2.
OBSBOT Tiny 2 Digital Camera World describes a 4K webcam with pan-and-tilt tracking for presenters who move around in frame. The guide reports no external audio support and availability constraints at the time of its coverage. Confirm the current stock and exact setup before choosing it.

No cited source provides a consistent head-to-head lab comparison across these models, so there is no evidence-backed universal winner. Prices and current retail availability were not verified; check the current listing for the precise model and regional variant.

Do you need a 4K webcam?

Usually not for a face-cam stream that will be watched at 1080p. A 4K sensor can be useful if you plan to record at 2160p, crop or reframe a 4K capture, or have another production need for that resolution. The extra capability is only useful if the host computer, connection, streaming software, and intended output can handle it. Tom’s Guide’s advice that most buyers probably do not need 4K unless they regularly need 2160p output is editorial guidance, not a YouTube requirement.

Logitech lists the current US Brio as 4K at 30 fps and 1080p at up to 60 fps. That makes it a practical option when you want 4K capture capability but expect to stream at 1080p60. Resolution and frame rate are separate choices: a camera may offer its highest resolution at a lower frame rate.

Is 1080p60 enough for streaming?

For most webcam-led streams, yes. 1080p60 is a sensible target when the presenter gestures, demonstrates objects, or otherwise benefits from smoother motion. If the shot is mostly a seated presenter speaking, 1080p30 may be adequate and can be easier on bandwidth and processing. The right choice depends on motion, lighting, connection stability, and what your audience needs to see—not simply the largest specification printed on a camera box.

How to choose a webcam for your setup

Match resolution and frame rate to the job

Decide whether your stream will be 1080p30, 1080p60, or 4K before comparing models. Check the camera’s supported combinations rather than assuming it can deliver its maximum resolution and frame rate simultaneously.

Consider focus and movement

Autofocus is useful when you move toward or away from the camera or hold objects up to it. The Logitech Brio page lists autofocus; the cited review of the original Facecam says it does not have autofocus. For a presenter who moves across the shot, tracking may matter more than a fixed, high-resolution image; the OBSBOT Tiny 2 guide describes pan-and-tilt tracking.

Check framing, light, and mounting

Field of view determines how much of the room appears and how close the shot feels. Brio’s current US product page lists adjustable fields of view and framing presets. Automatic light correction may help respond to changing light, but it does not remove the need to consider where your lights and camera are placed. Check that the included mount suits your monitor, tripod, or other planned position.

Confirm connection, software, and privacy

Verify the exact camera generation, port requirements, operating system, and the software you plan to use. The older BRIO 4K Stream Edition support page lists OBS among supported third-party applications, but that does not establish compatibility details for every webcam generation or computer. Facecam MK.2’s reported privacy shutter is a model-specific feature; do not assume another variant has the same control.

Include audio in the total setup

A webcam’s picture and its microphone are separate buying considerations. Brio’s current US page lists integrated microphones, while both Elgato Facecam models described in the cited coverage lack a built-in mic. You can use external audio in an encoder workflow; budget for a separate microphone if the camera you choose has none and you need spoken audio. The available sources do not establish that any particular microphone is best.

How to stream a webcam on YouTube

YouTube documents three routes: “There are three ways to stream on YouTube: use a webcam, your mobile device, or an encoder (streaming software or a hardware encoder).” A webcam buyer does not automatically need an encoder. The direct webcam route is simplest; an encoder is appropriate when you want external audio or video hardware, scenes, or a more advanced production.

Direct webcam route

  1. Connect the webcam and check that your computer recognizes it. For a 4K setup, confirm the exact model’s port requirements; the USB 3.0 requirement cited here applies to the older BRIO 4K Stream Edition only.
  2. Open YouTube and start a live stream using the webcam option. Follow the on-screen prompts to select the camera and microphone, set the title and audience details, and preview the shot before going live. Interface labels may change.
  3. Check your framing, focus, exposure, and audio in the preview. If the webcam has no microphone, select your separate audio device where the interface offers that option.
  4. Start the stream only after confirming the preview and required stream details. Keep the camera and computer connected while streaming.

Encoder route, including OBS

  1. Connect the webcam and any separate microphone, then open your encoder, such as OBS. Add the webcam as a video capture source and select the intended microphone or other audio input.
  2. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. In the encoder’s stream settings, choose YouTube as the service and paste the stream key. Select a resolution and frame rate your webcam, computer, and internet connection can sustain.
  4. Set the encoder’s output to a YouTube-supported configuration. For a typical H.264 stream, use a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, progressive scan, and a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for exact bitrate ranges, which vary with output and can change.
  5. Start streaming from the encoder, wait for YouTube Studio to show the incoming preview, then begin the live broadcast in Studio if the workflow requires it. Monitor the preview and audio meters during the stream.

There is no single bitrate that is correct for every connection or output. A bitrate that is too high for the available upload speed can cause dropped frames or buffering; too low a bitrate can make motion and detail look poor. Run a private or unlisted test first, and leave upload headroom for other devices and traffic on your network.

Copyright and reused-content checks for documentary streams

Having a webcam does not grant rights to the music, footage, photographs, or other material you show or stream. Before broadcasting a documentary or clips, confirm that you own or have permission to use the material, or that a valid exception applies in your jurisdiction. A copyright claim or takedown can affect a live stream and channel.

Permission to use footage and eligibility for monetization are different questions. Reused-content rules may affect monetization even when you have permission or no copyright claim. Add original commentary, context, or meaningful editing where appropriate, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before building a channel around third-party material.

Troubleshooting common webcam-stream problems

  • The webcam does not appear: check its cable and port, close other apps using the camera, and confirm the operating system and encoder have camera permission. Re-select the device in YouTube or OBS after reconnecting it.
  • 4K is unavailable or the camera falls back to a lower mode: check the exact model’s supported resolution/frame-rate combinations, port, cable, and host compatibility. The USB 3.0 requirement is documented for the older BRIO 4K Stream Edition, not every Brio.
  • The picture stutters or the stream drops frames: reduce resolution or frame rate, lower the encoder bitrate, and check whether other devices are using the upload connection. Test before the public stream.
  • The image is soft or focus hunts: improve the light, clean the lens, and check focus behavior for the exact model. The original Facecam’s cited review says it lacks autofocus, so ensure the subject remains in the intended focus range.
  • Viewers cannot hear you: check the selected audio input, mute state, and encoder audio meters. For an original Facecam or MK.2, select a separate microphone because the cited sources say those models have no built-in mic.
  • YouTube receives video but does not go live: verify that the encoder is sending to the correct stream key and that the Studio preview is receiving the signal. Do not share or reuse a key publicly; reset it if exposed.

Or let it run in the cloud

A webcam is for a live camera shot. If your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded documentary or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: it loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
