Video Transcoding Explained: What It Is and When You Need It for Streaming

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media to meet compatibility, processing, or adaptive-streaming needs. If the source already fits, streamcopy can avoid needless compute and quality loss.

Video transcoding decodes an encoded audio or video stream and encodes it again, usually to change its format, resolution, bitrate, or other properties. You need it when the source will not work for the destination, when you must process or resize it, or when you need multiple quality versions for adaptive streaming. If the encoded streams already meet your delivery requirements and need no changes, copying them without re-encoding—called streamcopy—is usually the better choice.

What is video transcoding?

Transcoding is a decode-and-re-encode process. A transcoder reads an already encoded stream, decodes it, and encodes a new version. The result can use a different codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or audio configuration, depending on the workflow.

That distinguishes transcoding from simply copying an existing encoded stream. Copying leaves the encoded media unchanged; transcoding processes and encodes it again. FFmpeg’s documentation describes common reasons to transcode: applying filters such as resizing or deinterlacing, processing audio, or making media work with a destination that cannot decode its original codec.

When do you need to transcode a video for streaming?

Transcode when the destination needs media properties that your source does not have. The right decision depends on the source, the delivery platform, and what viewers or downstream systems need—not on a general rule that every video must be converted before streaming.

Transcode for compatibility

If the destination cannot decode the source’s video or audio codec, conversion to a supported codec may be necessary. A mismatch in container or packaging requirements may also need to be addressed, though changing a container is not always the same as transcoding: in some cases, the encoded streams can be copied into a different container without re-encoding.

Transcode to change the picture or sound

Resizing, deinterlacing, applying a visual filter, or processing audio changes the media. Those operations generally require decoding and producing a new encoded output. The same applies when a workflow needs a different bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or audio configuration.

Transcode to offer adaptive quality

Adaptive streaming commonly uses multiple renditions of a video, such as versions at different resolutions and bitrates. A player can select or offer a version suited to a viewer’s device and current connection. The OBS Project’s June 9, 2021 explanation describes transcoding a source feed into several feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. Which options a platform makes available depends on that platform; older descriptions of access tiers should not be treated as current eligibility rules.

When can you avoid transcoding?

Use streamcopy when the encoded audio and video already match the target workflow and you do not need filters or other transformations. Streamcopy passes the encoded streams through without decoding and re-encoding them. It can save processing and preserve the existing encoded quality, but it cannot make an incompatible codec compatible or apply changes such as resizing.

FFmpeg’s documentation cautions that encoding is computationally expensive and, in most cases, lossy; it recommends streamcopy when transcoding is unnecessary. That is why re-encoding should solve a specific requirement rather than be an automatic step.

Transcoding is not the same as packaging

Transcoding changes the encoded media. Packaging organizes media and related information into a delivery format that a player can consume. They are related workflow stages, but they are not synonyms. A pipeline may create multiple encoded renditions and then package them for delivery.

HLS and DASH are examples of streaming delivery formats. MPEG describes DASH as a standard for live and on-demand delivery over existing internet infrastructure. A transcoder may produce the renditions used in a DASH or HLS presentation; packaging and delivery determine how those outputs are arranged and made available to a player.

Transcoding alone does not guarantee smooth playback. The encoding choices, packaging, player behavior, viewer bandwidth, and the rest of the delivery workflow all matter.

Does live streaming need transcoding?

Not always. A live stream can be sent onward without a format conversion if its source already fits the destination’s requirements. Transcoding becomes useful when the workflow must change the incoming media or create delivery renditions, for example to offer multiple quality levels or meet output compatibility requirements.

Managed live services can perform conversion as part of a larger workflow. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview describes accepting live SRT or RTMP input and converting it to HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. That is an example of a managed architecture, not a requirement for every live stream.

How local and managed transcoding workflows differ

Transcoding can run on a computer or server you operate, or through a managed service. The choice depends on whether you need live conversion or later processing, how much control you require, and who should operate the compute, storage, and delivery components.

Consideration Local or self-managed processing Managed cloud workflow
Workload You configure processing for live or on-demand needs. Services may provide separate live-processing and submitted-job workflows.
Control Can suit workflows that need custom codecs, filters, or pipeline configuration. Often uses service-defined workflows or presets; check the specific service’s supported options.
Operations You provision and maintain the processing environment. The provider operates service infrastructure, while you still configure the workflow and manage its inputs and outputs.
Timing Must be configured to meet the requirements of a live workflow when real-time processing is needed. Timing depends on the service: live APIs and asynchronous on-demand jobs are different workflows.
Delivery output Choose the required codecs, renditions, packaging, and audio or caption handling for your pipeline. Confirm that the service supports the codecs, renditions, packaging, and other outputs your delivery requires.

On-demand cloud jobs

Google Cloud’s Transcoder API overview describes submitted jobs that write processed outputs to Cloud Storage. Google identifies the API as asynchronous and says it does not provide strong timing guarantees. That makes it a poor fit when an interactive user is waiting for an immediate conversion result, though it may fit a workflow where processing can finish later.

Other managed examples

Cloudflare describes a managed workflow for uploading, encoding to multiple resolutions, adaptive-bitrate delivery, and distribution. AWS documents a video-on-demand and live-streaming workflow using CloudFront and AWS Media Services, with an encoder such as MediaConvert formatting and packaging media for streaming. These examples illustrate different managed approaches; they do not establish a universal best provider or comparable price or performance.

Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream live

If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, that is a different problem from transcoding. For example, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud and loops them to YouTube; it does not re-encode them. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K at 60 fps, so it is not a way to convert an incompatible file or create an adaptive-bitrate ladder.

Each StreamNeo slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Its plans have the same product features; only the billing period changes. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.

Common transcoding mistakes and fixes

Re-encoding when no change is needed

Symptom: A workflow takes longer or uses more compute even though the output is supposed to match the input. Fix: Check whether the destination accepts the existing encoded streams and whether any filter or media change is required. If not, use streamcopy where the workflow supports it.

Assuming a container change always requires transcoding

Symptom: A file is converted even though only its container needs to change. Fix: Check whether the existing encoded streams can be copied into the target container. If they can, streamcopy may avoid re-encoding; if the codecs or other media properties are incompatible, conversion may still be needed.

Expecting transcoding alone to fix playback

Symptom: A video has been converted, but viewers still have playback problems. Fix: Check the whole delivery chain: encoding settings, packaging, player support, and available bandwidth. A new encode cannot by itself guarantee smooth playback.

Using an asynchronous job for an immediate result

Symptom: An application waits for an on-demand cloud job to finish before responding to a user. Fix: Design around asynchronous completion, or choose a workflow intended for the required timing. Google says its Transcoder API does not provide strong timing guarantees, so it should not be treated as an immediate-response service.

A practical decision checklist

  • Check compatibility: Can the destination decode the source’s video and audio codecs, and accept its delivery format?
  • Check for required changes: Do you need to resize, deinterlace, filter, process audio, or change a media property?
  • Check the rendition requirement: Does delivery need multiple versions for adaptive quality?
  • Choose the least-changing workflow: If the source already fits and needs no processing, use streamcopy; otherwise transcode only as much as the requirement calls for.
  • Check the rest of delivery: Confirm packaging, player behavior, and bandwidth expectations separately from the encode.
