For reliable audio after you lock your phone, use the official YouTube app with a YouTube Premium account. For free multitasking, picture-in-picture (PiP) can keep eligible, non-music videos—such as documentaries, lectures, and interviews—in a floating window. PiP is not the same as screen-off background playback, and Shorts and music content have important restrictions.

YouTube calls audio continuing after you leave the app or lock the display background play. PiP leaves a small video player visible over other apps. Closing that window is not the same as locking the screen: unrestricted screen-off playback requires the applicable Premium benefit.
Use YouTube Premium for true background playback
YouTube officially supports background play in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps where those services are available. The feature can continue audio with the display off, but it is not available in the Shorts player. See YouTube’s current benefit details at YouTube Premium benefits.
Turn background play on or choose its behavior
- Open the YouTube mobile app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Under Background & downloads, open Background Play.
- Choose Always on (the default), Off, or Headphones or external speakers.
Start a supported video, leave YouTube, and lock the phone to test audio-only listening. The headphones-only option deliberately stops background playback unless an external audio output is connected.

iPhone and iPad
Sign in to the Google Account with the Premium membership in the official YouTube app, then use the Background Play setting above. iPhone and iPad PiP additionally require iOS 15.0 or later; the PiP procedure is below.
Android
The same Premium app setting applies on Android. If playback still stops, check Android’s background-data and battery restrictions for YouTube before reinstalling the app.
Use picture-in-picture for free multitasking
PiP keeps a supported video in a movable floating window while another app is open. It is useful for following a documentary, tutorial, news report, or lecture while taking notes. It does not promise audio after the display is locked.
iPhone and iPad setup
YouTube documents PiP for iOS 15.0 and later. First enable the device control at Settings → General → Picture in Picture → Start PiP Automatically. Then in YouTube open profile picture → Settings → Playback → Picture-in-picture.
- Play a supported, non-music video.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge (or press the Home button on devices that have one) to leave YouTube.
- The video should shrink into a floating PiP window. Drag it to reposition, or tap it for controls.
- Tap the close control on the PiP window when finished.
Music-related content—including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some music-partner uploads—requires Premium for PiP under YouTube’s documented rules. See the iPhone and iPad instructions.

Android setup
Allow PiP at Settings → Apps → YouTube → Advanced → Picture-in-picture → Allow picture-in-picture. In YouTube, also check profile picture → Settings → Playback → Picture-in-picture.
- Start an eligible video.
- Use the Home gesture or Home button to leave YouTube.
- Use the floating player over another app.
- Tap the player and choose X, or drag it off the bottom of the screen, to close it.
For Premium members, dismissing PiP can leave playback running in background mode. Without that entitlement, locking the display normally ends the session. Android details are in YouTube’s Android PiP guide.
Use YouTube in Safari or Chrome
YouTube’s official mobile-browser route is a Premium feature:
- Open
m.youtube.comin Safari or Chrome. - Tap the profile picture and sign in to the Google Account linked to Premium.
- Start playback.
- Leave the browser or lock the display to test background audio.
This is the documented browser method at YouTube’s mobile-browser help page. Desktop-site switches, lock-screen button tricks, private browsing, and other free workarounds can change after YouTube, the browser, or the operating system updates; do not treat them as permanent solutions.
Premium, Premium Lite, or no subscription?
Premium Lite is a lower-cost plan where offered, but its coverage is narrower. YouTube’s March 2, 2026 announcement says it adds background play and downloads for most videos while excluding Shorts and music content. Availability and benefits are country-specific; verify the live plan page at youtube.com/premiumlite.

Full Premium is the safer choice for music, official music videos, broad device compatibility, ad-free viewing, downloads, and YouTube Music. Check current availability and billing terms at youtube.com/premium; prices can differ by country, tax, billing platform, promotion, and plan.
Other official plan formats
YouTube lists monthly, prepaid annual, family, two-person, and student memberships, with eligibility varying by location. Annual memberships are prepaid, non-recurring, individual plans; YouTube lists the United States and several other countries as supported markets at its annual-plan page. Student membership requires higher-education enrollment and annual SheerID verification (eligibility details). Available plan types are summarized at YouTube’s plan-help page. Some Google AI bundles may include YouTube benefits in selected countries; verify the live offer rather than assuming eligibility (bundle information).

Work through these checks in order. They address the account, content, settings, permissions, and connection issues YouTube identifies in its troubleshooting guidance (background-play troubleshooting).
- Confirm the content type. Make sure you are not playing a Short. Check whether music restrictions apply to your plan.
- Confirm the account. Tap profile picture → Paid memberships and verify that the Premium logo and membership appear on the account currently signed in.
- Check membership status and location. An expired membership, unsupported country, travel situation, Workspace account, or account switch can change benefits. Do not bypass regional controls with a VPN.
- Check Background Play. Set YouTube → profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Background Play → Always on, unless headphones-only behavior is intentional.
- Check PiP separately. On iPhone/iPad verify the system and YouTube PiP switches; on Android verify the app’s PiP permission and YouTube’s Playback setting.
- Update YouTube. Install the current version from the device’s app store.
- Allow background activity and data. Remove battery-saver, background-data, notification, or app-suspension restrictions that can stop playback.
- Check audio focus. Pause another media app, navigation voice, call, or recording app that may have taken control of audio.
- Test the connection. Try stable Wi-Fi or reliable mobile data.
- Restart the app and phone. If needed, sign out and back in to the Premium account.
- Allow synchronization time. After a recent resubscription or restoration, YouTube says some benefits may take several hours to appear.
- Isolate the problem. Test the same account on another supported device. If the official path still fails, contact YouTube support or submit in-app feedback.
Which option is best?

Unofficial clients and extensions may be unstable, privacy-sensitive, unavailable in app stores, or affected by policy changes. They do not provide the account support and cross-device continuity of YouTube’s official options.

Can YouTube play with the screen locked?
Yes. The officially supported method is YouTube Premium in the mobile YouTube or YouTube Music app, with Background Play enabled. Shorts are excluded.

Can I play YouTube in the background for free?
Free PiP can keep eligible non-music videos visible over other apps, but it is not dependable screen-off playback. YouTube does not provide a universal free background-audio entitlement.

Why does PiP work for one video but not another?
Eligibility depends on content type, music restrictions, account, device, operating-system version, settings, and rollout. Music videos and related content generally require Premium.
Does YouTube Premium work in Safari?
YouTube documents background playback at m.youtube.com for users signed in to Premium. Browser and device behavior can still vary.
Can YouTube Shorts play in the background?

Why does YouTube stop when I open another app?
Check account and membership status, Background Play, PiP permissions, background data, battery restrictions, competing audio apps, network stability, and whether the content is eligible.
Does Premium Lite include background play?
Where available, it covers most eligible videos but excludes Shorts and music content. Confirm the current country-specific offer before subscribing.
Can I use background play on a computer?
A desktop browser can normally continue playing while another window is used. System sleep, browser tab suspension, or network interruptions can still stop playback.
Does downloading a video solve the background-play problem?
No. Offline downloading and background playback are separate benefits. A download helps when offline, but it does not change which content or plan supports background play.
