For official offline listening, use YouTube Premium; it does not give you MP3 files. For authorized downloads you can keep locally, yt-dlp with FFmpeg offers the most control, while MediaHuman and 4K YouTube to MP3 provide graphical interfaces. Online converter sites are convenient, but harder to verify for privacy, safety, reliability, and audio quality.
Choose by what you need—and what you have permission to download
There is no single best Y2mate alternative. The right choice depends on whether you want offline playback inside YouTube, a local file, a simple graphical workflow, or detailed control over formats. Download only material you own, that is public domain or openly licensed, or that you have permission to save. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction and use, and third-party downloading may also conflict with YouTube’s terms.
For audio quality, prioritize the best source stream available rather than the biggest advertised output bitrate. Converting compressed audio to MP3 is usually another lossy encoding step; a 320 kbps output cannot restore detail missing from the source. If your player supports the original format, keep it.

Plan types, eligibility, and availability vary by market. YouTube says current pricing is shown through the account or signup flow and can differ by country, taxes, and price changes; check its pricing guidance rather than relying on a universal price. Best free technical option: yt-dlp with FFmpeg
yt-dlp is an open-source command-line downloader with format-selection and playlist features. It is a strong fit for technically comfortable users handling authorized material, especially when they want a local file and control over whether to preserve the available stream or convert it. It is not a one-click beginner app, and changes to sites can temporarily affect support. Use the official repository and official releases for installation and updates.
FFmpeg is needed for many audio extraction, conversion, or stream-merging tasks. Get it from the official FFmpeg project or a reputable package manager, not a bundle from an unrelated converter site. After installation, check that the executables are available:

Convert an authorized download to MP3

Playlist downloads and avoiding duplicates
Only use batch commands for items you are authorized to save. To record completed downloads in an archive file and name items by playlist position and title:

Cookies and account security
Avoid using browser cookies unless you understand the risks and genuinely need them. Never upload a cookie file to a converter site, share it, or trust an unknown extension to export it. yt-dlp’s FAQ warns about a malicious “Get cookies.txt” browser extension. If a cookie file may have been exposed, remove it and revoke the affected account sessions.

Best graphical options
MediaHuman YouTube to MP3
MediaHuman is a more approachable desktop option for people who prefer a graphical interface to terminal commands. The vendor offers downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux on its download page, with product information at its site. The vendor describes its applications as free to try and advertises no advertising or spyware; those are vendor claims, not an independent safety guarantee.
It suits users who want to paste links into a local application and avoid an ad-heavy browser workflow. Its format and automation controls are less transparent than yt-dlp’s. MediaHuman’s general purchase page lists a price for Audio Converter, but that is a different product; do not assume it is the price or license for YouTube to MP3. Check the purchase page and the specific product checkout for current terms.

4K YouTube to MP3
This desktop product is aimed at users who prefer a polished interface for playlists, channels, and batches. The vendor’s page says high-quality audio depends on what the source site supplies, and that YouTube Premium authorization may be needed for certain higher-quality YouTube audio features. Treat these as product-specific statements, not universal requirements for every downloader.
Prices displayed on the vendor’s pricing page on August 16, 2026 were Lite at $10 per year, Personal at $15 lifetime, Pro at $45 lifetime, and a bundle at $65 lifetime. Prices, features, and license terms can change, so confirm them at checkout. The same page defines lifetime in relation to the product’s useful or supportable life, not the buyer’s lifetime. Check whether the plan’s licensing fits personal or professional use.

Browser-based Y2mate-style sites are easy to reach but harder to assess than software obtained from an identifiable project or vendor. Domains and clones can change; pages may use misleading download buttons, redirects, notification prompts, or bundled software; and server-side processing, retention, and tracking may not be clear to the user. Quality and availability can also vary when a service changes or YouTube changes its delivery system. This does not mean every converter site contains malware, but the category is harder to verify and less dependable for repeatable work.
Industry and regulatory submissions have identified Y2mate as a stream-ripping service and raised broader concerns about stream-ripping sites. These are reports and stakeholder allegations, not proof that every current domain behaves the same way: 2024 submission, RIAA 2025 report, and 2023 submission.
- Do not provide a converter with YouTube credentials, cookie files, payment details, or private URLs.
- Do not install an extension, app, or browser profile just because a conversion page asks you to.
- Leave if a page requires notifications, presents multiple fake download controls, or makes implausible promises such as lossless 320 kbps from every video.
- Do not treat a site that works once as a verified safe or reliable service.
Which format is best for high-quality audio?
“High quality” means preserving the best source you can lawfully access, not choosing the largest output number. A lossy source converted to MP3 remains lossy, and each additional lossy encode can introduce more artifacts. Opus or AAC/M4A may preserve more of the supplied source than an MP3 conversion, depending on the actual stream.

If the player supports the source codec, keep the original audio stream. Convert to MP3 only when compatibility matters. WAV is a container for audio, not a way to make a compressed source lossless.
Fix common download and conversion problems
“Unsupported URL” or unavailable content
- Confirm the URL opens normally in your browser and use the canonical video URL if a shortened or playlist link causes trouble.
- Check whether the content is public and available in your region, and whether you have permission to access and save it.
- Update yt-dlp or the desktop app from its official source. The yt-dlp FAQ notes that some package-manager versions can be outdated or broken.
- Private, removed, age-restricted, and region-restricted content can fail for reasons an update will not fix. Do not try to bypass access controls.
FFmpeg is missing or MP3 conversion fails
Install FFmpeg from the official project or a reputable package manager. If the program still cannot find it, ensure its executable directory is on your system PATH, restart the terminal after changing PATH, and run ffmpeg -version and ffprobe -version again. Missing FFmpeg can also prevent extraction or merging when audio and video are separate streams.
The audio sounds worse than expected
- The source may already be low quality, or the converter may have selected a lower-quality stream.
- MP3 conversion can add another lossy encoding step; an output bitrate setting does not describe the source quality.
- Keep the original stream where possible and avoid repeated conversions.
- Use FFprobe or another file-inspection tool to check the downloaded file’s codec and bitrate. Compare files under the same playback conditions.
Metadata is missing or wrong
Video titles are not standardized music metadata, and playlist entries may not be songs. Automatic artist, album, year, and artwork fields are conveniences, not authoritative catalog data. Review them before adding files to a permanent library.
Pick the alternative that matches your workflow
- I only want offline playback: choose YouTube Premium and keep playback in its supported app.
- I need an authorized local file and can use a terminal: choose yt-dlp with FFmpeg; retain the source stream unless you need MP3 compatibility.
- I want playlists or batches with a graphical interface: compare 4K YouTube to MP3’s current plan and licensing terms.
- I want a simpler desktop application: try MediaHuman, checking the exact product’s current limits and license.
- I only need to convert a file I already have: use FFmpeg or Audacity; neither is a YouTube downloader.
- I want a no-cost technical option: yt-dlp and FFmpeg are free and open-source, but require setup and updates.
For mobile listening, Premium is the clearest official path. Be cautious with third-party Android apps, sideloaded APKs, and unknown iOS profiles; they are harder to verify and can introduce software or account risks.
