Best Video Formats for an FFmpeg Playlist Streamed Continuously to YouTube

For a conventional FFmpeg playlist to YouTube Live, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS, set CBR and two-second keyframes, and check file compatibility before streaming continuously.

For a conventional FFmpeg playlist sent to YouTube Live, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS. Set constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and keep keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Those output settings are separate from the format of the files in your playlist: FFmpeg can concatenate compatible inputs without re-encoding, but mismatched files may need normalization or re-encoding before you can stream them reliably.

What “video format” means in this workflow

Three separate choices are often called the video format:

  • Container: how a file packages video and audio, for example MP4.
  • Codecs: how video and audio are encoded, such as H.264 video and AAC audio.
  • Ingest protocol: how your encoder sends the live stream to YouTube, such as RTMPS or HLS.

Choosing an .mp4 extension alone does not make arbitrary files compatible with one another or establish the right live output settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers ingest codecs and settings; FFmpeg’s FAQ explains the conditions for concatenating files.

Recommended output settings for an ordinary YouTube Live stream

For a standard SDR stream using RTMPS, H.264 video and AAC audio are a conservative baseline documented by YouTube. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio, in broader encoder guidance; the suitable options depend on the ingest protocol and use case. HDR has separate requirements.

Setting Recommended starting point
Video codec H.264 for a conventional RTMPS workflow
Audio codec AAC
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Scan and pixels Progressive scan; square pixel aspect ratio
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate in YouTube’s guidance
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit
Video bitrate Choose from YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate; confirm it at setup time

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and sets a four-second maximum. Its recommendations for stereo AAC/MP3 include 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are platform settings, not guarantees of stream quality: the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and upload connection must work together. See YouTube’s current encoder settings for its resolution and frame-rate bitrate table rather than relying on a fixed bitrate copied from an old command.

Choose RTMPS or HLS based on the workflow

RTMPS: the usual choice for continuous ingest

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. It is the straightforward choice for a conventional, continuously running encoder when its codec and HDR support suit the stream.

HLS: a segmented alternative with more requirements

HLS is a separate ingest option. It delivers segments and has greater latency than RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube also describes HLS as an option for HDR workflows when an encoder lacks the needed RTMP capabilities. Use HLS when those capabilities or requirements fit your case, not just because the source files are in a particular container.

Check whether your playlist can be concatenated without re-encoding

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can concatenate files without re-encoding when the inputs meet its compatibility requirements. This is stream copy: it avoids encoding the playlist again, but it is not a universal way to join arbitrary files seamlessly. Compare every file’s stream properties before relying on it.

Inspect the properties that need to match

  • Video and audio codecs
  • Video dimensions and frame rate or time base
  • Pixel format
  • Audio sample rate and channel layout

When the streams do not align, normalize or re-encode them to a common configuration, or use a filter-based concatenation workflow. Re-encoding adds processing work; its suitability depends on your files and system. The FFmpeg documentation does not establish that every playlist will play without a visible or audible transition, so test the actual files.

See the FFmpeg FAQ for concat demuxer details. A compatible container extension by itself is not a substitute for checking streams.

Configure the stream key and ingest URL safely

Use the ingestion URL and stream key or name supplied by YouTube Live Control Room or its API. The YouTube Live API documentation notes that an encoder may ask for the ingestion URL and stream name separately or as a combined value, depending on the encoder. Follow the fields and format your encoder expects. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, or playlist file that others can access.

Test a continuous playlist before depending on it

  1. Check every input. Inspect the audio and video stream properties across the full playlist. Resolve incompatible inputs before choosing stream copy.
  2. Run the exact playlist and output configuration. Test the same files, encoding settings, protocol, and connection you plan to use for the continuous stream.
  3. Watch file boundaries. Listen for audio gaps or discontinuities and look for visual jumps when playback moves from one file to the next.
  4. Check connection headroom. Make sure the upload connection can sustain the chosen output rate reliably; do not treat a momentary connection speed as proof of sustained capacity.
  5. Monitor YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and checking the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the event.

A command template cannot prove that a particular playlist, FFmpeg build, encoder workload, and network will run continuously without interruption. Validate the real setup and monitor it.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
Concat errors or a playlist that will not join as expected Input streams differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rate/time base, pixel format, sample rate, or channel layout Inspect every input and normalize/re-encode to a common configuration, or use a filter-based workflow.
Audio or picture changes at a file boundary Transition behavior or differences between source files Test the actual boundary, audio continuity, and output configuration before relying on the playlist.
YouTube reports stream health messages Output settings, upload stability, or ingest configuration Review the current YouTube encoder guidance and Live Control Room messages; verify resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and connection.
Encoder rejects the stream key or ingest address URL and key fields may be entered separately or combined depending on the encoder Use the values from Live Control Room/API and match the encoder’s expected field format.
HLS stream has unexpected delay or protocol issues Segmented delivery and HLS-specific requirements Account for higher latency and check TS format, segment duration, rolling playlist, HTTPS methods, and byte-range rules.
